Careful Criticizing CSI Org

why does any one think its okay to go on the internet and grip about someone's business if you are tied to it. [...]

Yes, the comments weren’t from a random player but from a league operator—essentially a local ambassador and representative for the organization and a recruiter for new players. It's common for people in those roles to be held to a higher standard of avoiding public statements that undermine confidence in the competitions, governance, sponsors, etc.

My guess is that if the post had simply been a discussion about pocket size, this thread wouldn’t exist. But in a short message he:
– criticized the officiating
– criticized the policing of bad behavior
– criticized the welcoming of new players
– criticized the welcoming of lower-skilled players
– ridiculed the equipment
– called out a major sponsor
– wrapped it up with the phrase “BCA is fast becoming…”

Put together, that reads less like a narrow criticism and more like an insider saying the organization itself is going downhill. When comments like that come from someone tied to the league in an official capacity, it’s just not surprising the organization would respond.

Isn’t pool supposed to be dead?

I live in Midcoast Maine, in a city of 6,800 people. There's a pool hall that opened up 3 years ago - barely hanging on. 8 beautiful 9' Diamond tables. With APA leagues, weekly tournaments, and now 4 individual Pool Hall-initiated leagues (8 & 9 ball, tier 1 and tier 2), you have to reserve a table a few days in advance if you want to play.
Most players are between 20 and 30, and then there are the old geezers like me (62).
Great to see. I just want them to be successful.

Best matches to show to newbies

Hello,

I often go to play pool with friends that don't know what pool is aside from the occasional table in a bar.
As you know pool is a very interesting game, but hard to understand to the new player.
Sometimes I want to send them videos of matches to see the best pool can be, so my friends want to come play again

Can you suggests example of thoses matches for thoses disciplines : 9 or 10 ball, one pocket, 14.1?
I think the criterias are:
  • thrilling scenario
  • fast play
  • good commentary with explanations.
thanks

Bank pool might not be the best game to show newbies, but this one is short and might qualify:

Reyes vs Takahashi 1995 US Open on Accustats. Reyes puts on a clinic here. It also has the added bonus of showing a player show real heart after being frozen in the chair for a bit. Efren opens w/a 4 pack, then drops it on the snap to go up 5-0. In rack 6 he makes ball on the break and can’t see the opening object ball and pushes to a spot 95% of players would give back.

Takahashi not only doesn’t give it back, but makes a brilliantly conceived shot that was only way he could get shape on the next ball and gets out of a tough rack. An amazing response showing real grit after being in the electric chair since he lost the lag. Sadly, it was short lived, Efren went on to beat him 11-1. It’s a great match, Efren in his prime hitting on all cylinders.

Jakub Jokub- what do we think?

As At Large said, no foul on moving the CB with the tip in the manner done here.

The taking balls out before the CB stops (even without anything touching the CB) has been discussed here before. It just isn’t in the WPA rules as I read them. IIRC it is an EPBF interpretation of the rules (or perhaps a some rule of their own). This interpretation has infected the Predator events which seem to be staffed by EPBF trained refs.

I looked at their website and I could find nothing that sets out this rule/interpretation (including, for example whether the foul is placing the balls on the table, or touching the balls in the pocket or even reaching into the pocket). Margarita Fefilova said on Facebook that in a Scotch Doubles Predator match Tyler was penalized for reaching into the pocket. IMO if they are going to make up stupid rules the least they can do is publish them so we know exactly what they are.

I couldn’t find the earlier discussion, which did include some thoughts from Bob Jewett IIRC.

As an aside, I knew of this stupid rule (as a North American amateur). How does Aleksa (a European Pro) not know of it? And how does he take any chances the second time?
