1 Pocket Ghost

1 pocket is a thinking person's game, so I'm lucky to have a world class one pocket thinker to help me learn it. I've taken lessons with 1 Pocket Ghost a few times now, and I'm always more impressed than before with the depth of his knowledge and insights about the game.

Last night was no exception - as usual, we just went through some games shot by shot, stopping and analyzing each situation's opportunities and risks before taking each shot - sometimes trying out one option to illustrate how it actually worked out (Ghost is uncannily accurate in his predictions) and then replacing the balls to try another.

Ghost could easily go on for 15 minutes or more about each situation, showing me multiple shots and moves each time when I struggled to find one or two. And he doesn't just see the options; he also sees their strengths and weaknesses in great detail and can articulate clearly how to rank them from best to worst and why the situation favors one over another. I don't just learn shots from him (although his shot creativity is one of the most fun things about him); I learn how to think about the game.

Lots of players can play the game well, but it's a rare one who plays well and can also explain the hows and whys of the game to a banger like me. I don't think he particularly wants me promoting him here, but I wanted to point him out to you all for your own education - so that you might pay a little closer attention when he adds his opinion to a 1 pocket thread. It'll be worth your time.

Pat.....Thanks much for the kind words, and let me say in return...

Pat is a highly intelligent and perceptive student - my only complaint with him is that he 'self medicated' during our whole 3 hours together so I'm not sure if he retained all the things I showed him..... :D

For the record, I have a prescription from Dr. Leary.

I've always respected and appreciated ghost's insightful 1-hole posts. You are lucky to be able to learn from him.

Everyone should be as lucky as you are to have someone that you can draw knowledge from such as 1 POCKET GHOST.

It's great to be able to find someone that has the knowledge and experience, but more so in a game like one pocket.

One pocket presents so many situations with multiple solutions that you need to be able to decipher them so that you can select the best possable options. In this game passing knowlege from one person to another can condense years of learning into months.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the cool table set up that Pat has at his house that we played on - He's got the 'night club' set up with the black lights over the table, and the psychedelic cloth and balls that light up/glow under the lights..........It took a little getting used to - and it was especially hard to see the purple 4 ball.....:(

You might have been a little medicated yourself by the time we were through. I'm not sure if you showed me all the things I retained...

Its rare that a one pocket player will share his knowledge and you should feel fortunate have such a friend. Reading books and watching videos is not the same as having the expert right there with you. My club recently invited Wade Crane to show us some one pocket moves and I was humbled beyond belief. We all were amazed at the subtle moves that seem so simple and yet we didn't see them ourselves. Its truly an amazing game that requires much knowledge and skill. I am in awe whenever I see real players going at it in one pocket.

I didn't think Dr. Leary had taken any new patients since the 70's.....:D

He used to see music and hear colors, right? He was one weird bird!

Didn't they launch his ashes into space? I think I remember reading that somewhere.

Guess you could say "he's way out there." LOL

Right on Pat!!

Right on Pat. Ghost is a great one pocket player and teacher. Ghost I think we may need to go back to what Pat decribes below.

"we just went through some games shot by shot, stopping and analyzing each situation's opportunities and risks before taking each shot - sometimes trying out one option to illustrate how it actually worked out (Ghost is uncannily accurate in his predictions) and then replacing the balls to try another.

Doug...BE NICE! Please don't try to compare One Pocket Ghost with Fast Larry. He is a very nice guy, an excellent player, and obviously a good communicator (from Pat's positive review).:D I've known him for many years.

Hey Ghost, I get an exemption when you raise your rates because of all this free advertising, right? I'm not asking for a kickback, just don't gouge me along with all the other suckers.

And you'll still teach me the real stuff, right?

Scott.....Thanks for the kind words - next time I get up there to Kalamazoo, we'll have to play some one pocket.

As for smorg....I don't mind, he's a jokester like me, so he's just funnin' with me.
