Danny is now 58 years old, but many don't realize what a great run he had in the 80's. He was one of the most feared 9 ball players in the world for about 3 years. He lived in Denver and dam few came through even looking his direction. His break was just like thunder and he went for everything. He was one of the best shot makers ever during this period rating right up there with Stevens. His stroke wa about as level and pure as anyone who ever played the game.

Danny and I traveled together for quite a while and became the bet of friends and I have seen him some sheer miraculous things on a pool table. He was so feared because he went for everthing and subject to make anything, but, subject to scratch on anything too. But, he scrared the hell out of all of them.

When he ran those 9 racks on David Howard was the most impressive thing I ever saw him do. He was being sharked on the sidelines so disgracefully and so badly it was pathetic. It was so bad his wife was crying and I slapped the loudest one.

Two weeks later at Table Steaks in Denver on a double tough table, he ran 14 racks. Yep, I saw that too. An hour later, I ran two and told him he needed weight. We then got very drunk.

I'll never forget the first time I saw Danny play. It was back in the early 90's at a McDermott Tour event at Shooters in Olathe.

He beat my local (St. Louis hometown) pool hero at the time Little Ricky Vanum, on a 9footer playing cheap practice. Danny actually lapped the coin around the table on Ricky. I was shaking my head. I had never seen anyone make Ricky look that weak. Ricky was playing fantastic pool at the time.

If Danny teaches the way he plays, one could learn a lot.

I would classify his style as 'firepower'!

I watched him do the same thing to the fella in your avatar too.

I have a super old vid of Danny, and Pretty boy doing a hustler "how to"...I've seen them play in person, and they play the old school go for it "cut your heart out" style that I would LOVE see come back!

I guess this is the same guy that Efren used to rob back in the 80's, right?

No doubt about it. Danny was a true Road Warrior. I consider myself very lucky that he was still in grade school during my years in Denver. (I think it was lucky for Grady too.)
Good luck Danny. Crank it up again !

Dick

PS. But I'm still pissed at how you knocked me out of Jay's L.A. open in '93. Still stands out in my mind, as one of the most brutal bad rolls of my life. Do you remember ? Hill, hill should jog your mind.

I don't think I was there. That is about the time the road had just won me to a frazzle and I went to work selling windows and siding. THat is a story in itself. That bunch was the most ruthless bunch I was ever around.

Anyway, I had gone in and set some company records and moved through the ranks pretty quickly when the CEO appointed me An AVP. They flew me into corporate HQ and we hashed out a contract which came with a hefty salary and lots of perks. I was pretty happy.

The CEO took me to dinner and watered me real good and then put the bite down. He wanted a Jelly for getting me into position. I explained that in the pool world we called the jelly roll. He laughed his ass off, but, I didn't bite. I did though explain my past n the pool room.

Some period later he called me while in Denver and explained he had hired this computor geru who said he was a good pool player. He asked if I thought I could beat him and I said probably.

He arranged it for this guy to get a special comp plan which resulted in a quarterly bonus for like $20000, called me and flew me to Omaha and took us out. We beat the guy out of somethig $3500, split the money and the next day the CEO fired him. I asked him why he fired him and he said he didn't like losers. If ever there was a man who should have gotten dumped, but I didn't do it.

DANNY MEDINA' RESPONSE TO JBCASES.

(l spoke with Danny to and relayed your comment here is his response.)

"I don't know who JBCASESS /John Barton is but if you say he is from North Carolina..l knew a guy named J.Flowers down there and he had a friend maybe it was John. Anyway they used to back Buddy Hall ,TheRifleman.
It was 1983 or 84 and l was at Gradys Pool Hall in Colorado Springs in walks Buddy Hall and he hollers to me 'You got the 8 for a thousand' ..my cousin says you wanna give Danny the 8 ? Play for $2,000. We played 8 ahead, l won the 1st set in l hr.10min.and l won the 2nd set in 1hr.20min. Buddy takes off goes to Sacremento and wins $5,000 in a Pro event...He and his friends come back to Denver and go to Sid Barcelona's place on 43rd, and tell him .-'call Danny and tell him he's got the call 8 for $200 a game'- my cousin and l go down there with $10,000. and ask him to play for more, -he wouldn't, l didn't want to play $200 a game but my cousin said go ahead
l RAN 5 RACKS ON HIM -HE THREW DOWN THE LAST $200- DIDN'T SAY A WORD- PICKED UP HIS CASE- [DIDN'T EVEN PUT HIS CUE IN IT ] - AND HE AND HIS FRIENDS
WALKED OUT.....any way if John Barton is the guy that used to run with J.Flowers and back THE RIFLEMAN BUDDY HALL. "

This is pretty accurate as I was there. Danny was getting the call 8 and it lasted no time. It was the first time Danny had ever recieved a spot and didn't get one again till around 92 or 93.

Camel Pro Billiards Series (Professional) The first event of the 1997 Camel Pro Billiards Series was held at the Riviera Hotel in conjunction with the CAMEL/APA amateur event July 28 - Aug. 2. 80 of the world's top pro players were on hand to shoot for the $50,000 event purse. Hometown player, Danny Medina, emerged as the winner of the event which set him atop of the quarter million dollar Camel Pro Billiards point standings.

Mr.Medina thanks you for question.

Would of loved too see Danny (I call em Dino) in his bar table prime, play Matlock in his prime, and might as well toss the Ether in there too, but Dino was First a bar/road player for MANY years before he went to the big tables. His break shot rivaled David Howards.

I am sorry what was it about my post that promoted this response? I just thought the advertisement was quite funny.

As for the story I can't see any honor in beating a guy getting weight and bragging about it. Tell us a story where Danny beat Buddy straight up and we can talk there.

I know Danny and I like him. He gave me some lessons once upon a time and I still use what he taught me.

However the fact that he seemingly doesn't "know" me is one of the many levels I refer to in my post that those who know Danny would find funny.

JBCASES, John Barton, yes?.. l am cashrider, a pal of Dannys and the intermediary to the forum because Danny is not online...
Danny didn't take your post negatively he just can't recall the name John Barton ..He related the story to try and connect with the only J he knew in NorthCarolina...And by no means meant any disrespect to Mr.Buddy Hall ...its just the way the story went Buddy Ask him to play -and stated he'd give weight- Danny didn't ask for it..
Once again, no Direspect meant to the Great Champion, The Rifleman, Buddy Hall ...personally -l think he one of the nicest people in this business...he helped a friend of mine out of a jam once in St.Louis l believe,.. ask him about.....
"Highheels Danny Anderson" its a great story and a helluva testament to character of the man Mr.Buddy Hall..
and oh yeah ..love your cases your an artiste.
pm me if you want Danny's number. and thank you for appreciating my creative writing style . Be Well.

Does danny have a brother he used to run with, I remember someone back in 1986 I believe who had a brother who repaired cues during mcdermotts tour at shooters in olathe ks. I think his name was vic or victor?

Anyway I was just wondering if this Danny is the same Danny I met back then.

The Danny you are speaking of is Danny Vargas. he had a brother that did cue repair, his name was Victor Vargas.

I spoke with Danny today he was out w/ his spouse visiting family...

Dick he doesn't recall the particulars of the match but says hello and good luck with the rest of your life.. and thanks for the words of moral support.

on a side note ..

Dick you are a friend and mentor to young 'fastlenny' of OntheRail video productions, a giant in the live streaming of pool events...perhaps you can do Danny the favor of asking lenny to get him into a challengematch, afterall Danny did you the favor of being in gradeschool when you passed thru his neck of the woods[smiles]

POSSIBLE MATCH UP BROUGHT TO YOU BY ONTHERAILTV.....

SAN JOSE DICK VERSUS DANNY MEDINA

THE PLAY MUST BE ACTED OUT BY MERE MORTALS
