You would still have a casting that was wider than the rail.

I didnt say it would look right but it would be ugly. Depending how much time was spent on it i'm sure th casting would still be nitoriuos for scaring shafts from the metal still being higher then the wood. If someone took the time to fuss with it all. I'm just saying with a little grinding cutting anyone can screw a piece of metal to a piece of wood... would it be perfect of coarse not is it worth 100 hours of work I really dont think so.
As he asked in the original question can a be screwed to b? yes would it look right? no.
