Live Snooker Match Featuring Jeremy Jones.

Well I've watched the whole thing now Ernst and I'd have to say it was probably local town league 'B' division stuff, but I enjoyed it. You look in desperate need of some real competition to push you on. Maybe you should take a holiday in the UK. You would love it.

Do you have a snooker background or are you self taught? If so you've done remarkably well. You've certainly got the fundamentals down, but only playing regularly with a group of players better than you will drag you up to their standard and they'll point out flaws and nuances you're not aware of.

Your table looks very slow to me. The cushions don't seem too bad but the balls screech to a halt and seem to stop miles short of where I'm expecting them to. I know you brush it, but do you have a flat iron? The difference is like chalk and cheese. If you've never played on a newly ironed napped cloth then you're in for a treat. It's a thing of beauty and should speed it up a bit. It's also a lot more difficult to adjust to a fast table if you're used to a slow one, as it demands so much more finesse, and you might come a cropper in competition if you haven't been exposed to them before. But once you are used to fast tables they are amazing. You only need to nurse the balls around, and you really begin to appreciate it's not how hard you hit them that matters, it's how well.

And don't listen to Ray's protestations. You could do a lot worse than invite him down to stretch you. You'll stagnate playing against the same people you know you can beat. Your whole shot selection will end up being only what you need to beat them and will be a fatal flaw in your game. You learn from bitter experience exactly how much discretion is the better part of valour when every mistake is being mercilessly punished.

Hey Boro, I guess I came off as a bit of smart arse, ah well! Seroiusly though I actually played snooker today on the only table in the state (it is on my way home from work -- Rack em up in Frazer PA) The table has pool cloth on it (no nap) so the balls kinda slide all over the place and the top cushion is as dead as the Metro but it is all I have got!! I am really thinking about playing in the US Nationals because it is in New York this year and I can drive there. It's been a while since I donned the old waistcoat but I am excited about the thought. I have played so many snooker matches I think I could fall back into it pretty easily (maybe not). I was a bit ropey and my Parris was making some weird noises ( maybe it was tired) but it felt good to hit a couple of smaller breaks so I had fun.

No I meant you telling the old sob story that you couldn't hardly pot a ball anymore Ray. I'm not falling for that one.

What did you think of the table? Do you think it looks slow? I can imagine how intimidating it must be going onto a snooker table for the first time, but I think going from a slow club table to a fast pro set-up table is just as much of a culture shock. It's hard to feather the balls when you're used to clagging them. It's easy the other way. Or is that just me?

The table was slow for sure but the cushions looked ok which makes it better on the canal boat I have to play on! You could tell how slow it was by how hard Dr snooker had to hit everything, still looked like a nice setup though. I felt good hitting balls today, I missed the blue to clear up a line up and I hit an 80 odd going into the back of them so I am happy enough. The tables at the Nationals are very fast and very tight which suits me down to the ground. Hey Boro did I ever tell you about the time me and Terry Murphy played big Bill Werbuniuk for pints at the Harrogate Leisure Centre? We were there for the UK under 18's, we both got dumped out early and we took about 10 beers each off big Bill, we were 17 at the time and I nearly got into a fight because in one of the games I hit a 93 came perfect on the last black and then just racked the balls. That didn't go over well with a couple of the locals. I was a cocky little bugger back in those days!! That was 1990. The Canadian fellow on here (Jason) reminded me of that day. Your boy Causier was there that day too, he romped home in the billiards. Ah the good old days!!!

Yeah I remember. But last time you told some cock and bull story about taking pints of beer off Bill Werbeniuk. Chuck Norris tried that once. Only the once. Now it turns out you were only hammering him at snooker.

He certainly liked a brew. I remember Bill claimed he needed six gallons before he could calm down enough just to chalk his tip, and wanted to claim his beer as a legitimate business expense. The Inland Revenue said they found it a bit rich, and fairly hard to swallow. Bill suggested they try the pale ale instead. When it turned out he'd had his claim knocked back he went home never to be seen again. His accountant had told him that if he won the world championship and claimed the high break prize, with the additional bonus of a 147 cheque, he'd still be out £17.59p for the fortnight. I remember the chairman of Allied Breweries rushing out a profits warning and cancelling the dividend at the time.

He is a hard guy to forget, we were there at about 10am and he was already there at the bar with this sky blue suit on, he drank all day and didn't get one bit drunk. He was well past it by this point and both me and Terry could have given him a 20 point start but he was game to play. That was one of my best memories from a snooker tournament and I only won one match that day. I heard if he gave blood it would have a head on it!!

Thanks for all the comments. The whole thing is now on you tube. I've been watching it and there are some serious "what were you thinking" moments. I'm learning a lot by watching myself play! I think everybody should go out and record....
Anyway, yeah my table is getting slower and slower. It was picking up humidity while we were playing. The a/c just couldn't keep up. It's all brushed and ironed now and back to normal speed. Of course it's not the double shaved stuff the pro's play on. Can't wait to find out what that's like in May.
Hope to see you all there.

Hey that was a cool thing you did, playing in a good size snooker tournament is a totally different experience to pool ( I've played in hundreds). You will have a great time in May and it will make you really glad you play this game. If I can swing it I am going to play too. I hope I can because I quit playing a game I love just by changing countries and I don't think I have ever gotten over that. Keep doing drills and give people more weight than you think you can, this will keep you focused every game and you will need that when you come up against guys who can string 3 or 4 80's against you.

I hope to get Alan Morris for the next one. I would also like to see someone from across the pond come over. I am going to try to do a 10 ball match as well.

Hi there... sorry it's taken me a while to respond.

I'd love to come to Houston again to play a snooker exhibition. I had a great time when I played at Bogies, even if that table did fall far short of a match tournament table I am used to playing on, but I still had a couple of 50+ breaks on it which wasn't bad as those pockets are horrendous!! :)

For the record, I am actually still from across the Pond! :)

I'll let you know what my future plans are.

Thanks a lot!

Alan.

i see the most part of the match.
i know a little about the game but i have a big passion for snooker.
I think all in all jeremy jones play mediocrely, looks like he really don't know the game, probably thats the first time he play snooker. Dr. snooker, it was the first time that he played snooker?
He did some good pot but, as it seen on the video he choose very bad pattern shot and he often left himself bad and he must do difficult shot.
It needs to say he was playing with a pool cue and with it give the right speed is harder.
obviously sorry for my bad english

Jeremy actually plays snooker regularly at boogies. It definitely wasn't his first time, but he's definitely not specialized!

You're always welcome here. My setup is really pretty sweet and I'd love to play against a real snooker player to get my game up. Oh, and I'll let you crash in a spare bedroom for a multi-day event!

by the way dr. snooker you are a good player, you were a little nervous and obviously you didn't play in base of your standard, but is normal with the camera on you.
