I can't help but comment on this.

Would baseball be a sport if you removed the players in the field and replaced the pitcher's position with a "Tee Ball" stand?

Would Diving be a sport if they did it off a 10' extention ladder into an above ground swimming pool?

Would soccer be a sport if they moved the nets in to 8' apart and took all the players away except for the two goalies and they took turns kicking the ball into each others nets?

WELL THEN, don't discount the entire game of pool as not being worthy of being called as sport. It's the degradation of the beautiful game of pool by mickey mouse games like 9 ball and 10 ball. Blame those games, not the whole of pool.

I can't help recalling Grady Mathews interview after a straight pool match when he played Lou Butera. I wish I had that audio clip to share. To paraphrase what Grady said ...

The game of 9 ball has ruined pool. Think of a golfer stuck in the trees, you add a bunch more holes for him and let him whack the ball off one tree into another tree and it ridiculously falls into the hole. He went on to say he was ashamed to be associated with such a ridiculous empty game as 9 ball during his career.

Some very poignant statements from a man who knows the depth and beauty of real pool.

Somewhere as pool passed from generation to generation it got bastardized and reduced to the mere shell of the real game it once was.

There I said it.... end of rant. (somebody find Gradys audio clip if they can, he said it all. Right on Grady! )
