has anyone ever heard of a player who keep his identity hidden for any length of time, with all the cell phones and computers and fourms ? someone who would just play private games. or go to extreme measures to keep his identity hidden? also ,how long would you expect it to last?

I'm not real sure. Might ask Jack Cooney.

There's that getsomething or getone or something like that I heard about from Mississippi. Might want to check with him :)

Actually, there are a few that I know but I'm not going to out them. They are excellent players who make 40K +/- per year hustling 5, 10 & 20 bar action. Even if you played them you probably didn't know who they were or even that they played better than you. You would have thought they were construction workers enjoying their paycheck :) Only YOU were their paycheck.

They never play tournaments of any kind and only show up where it's crowded and not very often to the same places.

Wasnt this a tourney in WI? I seem to remember the rift this guy had about having his pic taken after the win.

No, the tournament wasn't in WI. When I saw this thread, I immediately thought of that picture and searched the forum and found it. Quite amusing actually....

still around

Yes there are still people that make a decent living at pool without making waves. As folks have already said, generally betting on the small side and never playing in events. I figure that I made over $25K a year playing pool most years between about 1972 and 1984. The exceptions were when times were really bad and pool was my sole income. Then I almost doubled that just putting in more hours using the same methods. Even $25K wasn't shabby for an after hours income back in that day.

I went by Hu then just as I do now and nobody knew who Hu was or who the half-dozen non-pool related nicknames people hung on me was. Indeed I was and am nobody. But I made pretty good dollars being nobody and the "somebodies" sometimes stuck their foot in a bear trap when they found me.

That's my lil buddy Gary in pic.

Gary won the tourney & a girl wanted a pic of 1st & 2nd place...that was a couple years ago before his name got out there so he said he didn't want to take pic..she promised to mask his face so he let her take pic & she fullfilled her promise..I think it was a worst knock on him then if he woulda just let her take pic in 1st place...it wasn't that big a tourney anyway but after..everybody wanted to know who the unknown road player was...it's what u call overthinking a situation...lol
