ok, here we go. Last night in league I'm playing somebody who's a fairly close friend of mine, the race is pretty tight and everything like that. Anyways, I get down, shoot the last ball before the 8 and as rocky's rolling around the table for shape on the 8 the captain of the other team's going "scratch, scratch, come on scratch". I didn't scratch, I wound up getting tight shape on the 8 and as I'm getting down to shoot he starts jingling his keys. I decide that it's time for a return dosage of his medicine so I pull a no lookie on the 8

So my question is this: even when someone's being a dick to you, is a no lookie on the 8 uncalled for (I thought it was hilarious, some others did not)

pull those two stunts back to back against some of the fellas I know, and picking up his teeth might be necessary...so, the no looky on the 8 wasn't too bad. :p

Just as the Subject of my post says, "what's good for the goose, is good for the gander." While a "no lookie on the 8-ball" would NOT be justified for merely the "scratch, scratch, scratch" cue-ball coaxing by the other team's captain, a "no lookie on the 8-ball" is certainly justified for the "jingling of the keys" sharking attempt. A little taste of his own medicine.

However, be careful with this maneuver in the future; use it sparingly. Don't use it in retaliation for mere cue-ball coaxing or other benign stuff done while you're not actually shooting. Only reserve it for stuff done while you're down on a shot -- e.g. sharking attempts. But make sure when you use it, that: 1.) you know your opponent and his/her team mates enough that they won't club you over the head when you're not looking, and 2.) you don't miss! :D

Hope this is helpful,
-Sean

Do you know the captain well? I would never try that kind of crap on anyone but a close friend.

And I agree with the other poster that you might have been slightly across the line if you had physically beaten him before shooting the 8. Pulling the smart-ass no-look isn't even close to the line, and in this case, entirely called-for.

These are some reasons I hate leagues. 10x more sharking and childish behavior occurs at leagues than any gambling session. And all for what?? some Points? Yippie!!

You failed...

You should pulled a no lookie one handed jacked up while taking a sip of your scotch with the off hand.. all while winking at his girl.

That would teach him a lesson..........

Isn't that the truth! Like anyone is going to live or die, or make their next house payment based on what happens in local bar league play. Don't get me wrong, I take my local leagues seriously, but not to that extent.

Last week, the team that we were playing had an extra player in attendance. He positioned himself at the bar, which is about 5 feet from the table (hey, it's a small place). He sat there and sang along to the juke box while me and my teammates were shooting, but was rather quiet when his teammates were at the table. Normally, when I'm at the table, I'm pretty good at ignoring outside distractions. But at one point during one of my games, I heard him singing over the juke box and stood back up on a shot. I noticed his teammate that I was shooting against motion to him to "shhh", and he did momentarily shut up. I never said anything to anyone on either team about it and just let it go. I figure the best way to shut people up is to ignore their tactics and win.

You know what? He deserved it for being such a poor sport! People like that I just want to drill them in the worst way.

I'm sorry you've had those experiences during leagues. I've never had anyone try to pull a shark move during leagues. Everyone is pretty relaxed, we're all there for fun, we know the points don't really matter in the grand scheme of life. There have been times when someone might've dropped something or their cue slipped off the table because they weren't using a Qclaw or something, but it's always followed by a very sincere "sorry".

I think doing the 8ball no lookie was a little over the edge. Beating him without acknowledging his existence is what I would've gone with.

What if...

The guy jingling the keys was your own team member!!!!! We play "high man" each night on my Tuesday night league. Each person owes the man with the highest number of points at the end of the night $5. By the 3rd or final round we are sharking each other like hell.

You did exactly what you are supposed to do. Technically he has already lost the game for sharking. The same as if he had broken down his stick.

As this was a little taunt between friends, I think a little gamesmanship was appropriate.

P.S. I hope you made the no-lookie!

As long as you make it...

Hey, if you made the 8-ball...no problem, good call...but...

I believe that Alex P tried that against Francisco B in a tournament for the game-winning shot....AND MISSED!

Alex ended-up winning the match anyway....but boy, would you look dumb if you missed it and lost the match.

yes he did i saw that as well.

Nothing at all wrong with the no-look money ball shot. Sharking your opponent while he's shooting though, that won't get you much action in the future.
