Pagulayan Incognito

Thing is I just don't see a mass flood of players going from pool to poker. The skill sets are so different. At the top level you don't have to read your opponent in tournament pool. At the top level in tournament poker that is the critical skill.

I really think they are two completely different disciplines. No reason a pro pool player like Alex can't be a good poker player but I don't think it gives you a significant advantage over a teacher, plumber, or whatever.

Alex is probably busy playing in the philippines that's why we don't see him often now a days. I remember seeing him at shooter's a few years back playing some cheap set of snooker with some local guy.

Have not seen him at the cardroom lately maybe he is busy with other things.

I have played cards with him before. He is not a good player. Yet. He is a losing player and considered a fish. He plays big NL games. The biggest in the country. But he is a very competitive and determined guy so I bet if he fully dedicates himself and studies the game he will become a winning player. He does not look like the guy who is just going to stand there till you break him.

PLus the card room here has a pool table so its not like they are only playing poker lots of times they sit after playing a set or while waiting for the other guy to arrive.

He must be doing something right to be able to continue playing. Cards are pretty brutal to your bankroll with how quickly the swings go.

I wonder if he has ever hustled another card player on the pool table to the effect of "you couldn't beat me at pool"? I could just see some egomaniac card player who can play a little jumping on Alex in that situation and getting his ass handed to him.

That would be funny. Imagine sneaking in a top notch unknown player on John Hennigan and laying down that hustle. Johhny World thinks it's just another card player and then reality sinks in after he freezes up 20 dimes.

Thats unfortunate but you gotta do what you gotta do I guess. Perhaps if there were 137 websites where you could bet fake money on video game pool we could get them to sponsor events with absolutely absurd pots.

Anyone that follows the tours in Asia will see he has been playing there all year. Guiness Tour, Japan Open, Villar Cup.

He missed the US Open for the final of the Guiness Tour which payed $20,000 for first with only a 16 player field.

As a previous poster said he will be at the World Pool Masters in Vegas to deffend his title.

When we played the Villard Cup in Cebu we used to hang out at a pokerclub at nights, with 2 pooltables. It was a fun place to hang out, think the place was called Bravio.

It was great action, and all the top filipino pros like Efren, Orcullo, Bustamante, Alcano etc. played poker every night on one of the 6 pokertables. Some played cheap games, but Alex and Alcano played higher than most, and they both seemed to be successful.

But they didn't only gamble at poker when they were there those few days. Efren played Alcano, and won, in rotation race to 15. Bustamante lost to Alcano in rotation race to 15, and Alex Pagulayan lost to Alcano in rotation race to 15.

Alex is playing tournaments in the Philippines very often now, the same with Efren, Orcullo etc. I think that because there are lots of national tournaments going on in their homeland, with $ 10,000 first prices, they don't travel so much to the States anymore, only for big events.

But because they aren't playing in the States doesn't mean that they have quit pool

The best would be if Phil Helmuth didn't know who Alex was. I would absolutely love seeing the look on his face as Alex ran out on him time and time again.

LOL I would pay to see Helmuth's face hahaha he'd be so angry. He'd probably say that Alex can't even spell pool... those of you who've heard Helmuth go on a tantrum know what I'm talking about lol :grin-square:

Happened Here

On one of the local riverboats a frustrated poker player mouthed off about how nobody at the table could beat him at pool. One guy agreed to play for a large sum and proceeded to bust him.

The poker player who agreed to play him was Jesse Bowman.

It amazes me that no one hasn't beat the hell out of him before. I've seen him be not only rude, but seriously get out of line where it was absolutely insulting.

Economic Stimulus...........

Thats life an its always been that way........You're pool players want to be poker players an your poker players want to be pool players........I'm sure if Alex wants to be a poker player, he will be a good one. It almost seems to me to be a sin to waste that much pool talent an knowledge. Good luck Alex........................

It was a fluke. Anybody who is a good poker player knows that moneymaker played poker like a sucker in the 2003 world series if they watched it on tv. lol!

If you learn how to play poker from a real good player and you always play good then it's really easy. I think it sounds so retarded when you hear someone say "Oh he's a champion poker player" lol and thousands of others play just as good. lol! I used to play 40 50 hours a week. It makes me cringe! All you have to do is read doyle brunsons super system 2 and remember everything and you'll be a great poker player.

Moneymaker took 2nd in an event in San Jose, CA and earned 200 grand. He might of got lucky in the WSOP, but winning another 200k makes you a player in my book. Everyone reads Doyles books probably, so at some point I'd think it would be only so useful against top players. I think Doyle said he made 50k on the first book, and it probably cost him millions.
