Tip Replacement Tool

Will a Porper Big Shaver:
1) trim a 14mm tip down to a ~13mm ferrule?
2) ferrule top sand normal to shaft?
3) burnish 13mm tip?

Is there a better way to get these three jobs done for about the same price of a big shaver or less? Burnishing is no big deal, but the key job is cutting a 14mm tip down to the ferrule without a lathe.

A video for you.

I just use a sharp knife to make a rough cut around the ferulle.
A Porper mushroom Grazer to trim up a little closer.
Then Porpers Little Shaver to trim even with the ferulle.
Tape off around the ferulle and use sandpaper to smooth the tip.
Shape and Porpers burnisher and a bit of spit.

Or to make a short story long as only I can.
The Porper Mushroom Grazer will handle a 14mm tip.
The Porper Cutrite will only handle a 13mm tip.

Thanks for the quick reply and tthe link to Seyberts video and kit. Looks like a good way to do it. That kit is like $60 and I think a big shaver does it for like $70, but maybe a little better.

I would like to see other methods and a review of a big shaver. Also, anyone have a big shaver used for sale?

Before I got my Willard machine I used a utility knife to cut around the ferrule and then did the final trimming using the Porper Little Shaver.

I really like the little shaver as it gets the trimming done very close to the ferrule with minimal chance of damaging the ferrule.

Finish with 800 grit and then burnish with spit and leather and remove the tape from the ferrule and clean the ferrule with alcohol or lighter fluid or WD 40 to get the tape residue off.

NK, I have a brand new Big Shaver that I'd probably sell you.
Porper makes great tools and its probably just that I didn't practice enuff with the Big Shaver. Seems that the big shaver wants to bite right into the tip and I couldn't get it to shave small strips off like you can with the grazer.
On one end of the cutrite, the nickel shaper makes a perfect shape. On the trimmer end, (which will only handle a 13mm) I found that it shapes the
tip in a cone fashion. Its cool but I don't like the cone shape. Probably better off with a couple of the smaller tools. Like the guy above me said, you can't go wrong with a Little Shaver. They work real slick.
If you have your heart set on a Big Shaver, we'll work something out. I still have the extra blade that it comes with.
The Big Shaver has the trimmer, nickel shaper, tapper and burnisher all in one.
Terry.

I tried the Big Shaver myself a long time ago and then threw it in my tool bin. Picked up another tool in S Korea for like 12 bucks that did a great job. I will post a pic later and if anyone wants one I will have my friend send me a bunch. I still have mine but never use it anymore. But wouldn't get rid of it for the world. I keep it in my bag for road trips... I think J&J has a picture of it but the only other place I know to get it is Longoni. It has no name But looks like a "T" and looks really cheap but it works.

Not the exact same one I have but very close. Mine is smaller. But the same Idea applies. After you have the tip glued you insert the shaft into the cutter and press a button then you turn it and it will get just a close as a lathe. Then use a poor mans lathe and take a joint pin and put it in your drill to burnish the sides/shape the tip. I have a lathe now so I just use this for emergency repairs on others cues who can't wait for anything.

The Willards machine works great !!! I had 3 but one got taken ... It's worth every penny and it will pay for itself in no time !!! You do have to buy or make some extra tooling such as different shaft collet sizes and a good supply of blades , I like it !!!

Also, anyone have a big shaver used for sale?

I bought one brand new about 2 months before I bought my lathe. I used it to put on about 3 tips. I think that if you are patient it works pretty good. It is for sale if anyone is interested. Make an offer.
