New videos from Dr. Dave and Bob Jewett

I would argue that they were intentional....for the purpose of the quiz!!! :grin:
 
I scored 85...with a couple tough calls wrong. Namely #35 and #72.

I still disagree with 35 since the balls are frozen. On a normal frozen shot it is perfectly fine for the CB to go forward of the tangent line. Is it really a double hit in this scenario?

In 72 I can see that since the balls are frozen a double hit is likely.

Why do you think you need to "be there" for these shots? With the illegal jump shot (scoop), the intent is obvious ... the player is intentionally scooping to jump over the obstacle ball. With the miscue and accidental scoop shots, there is no benefit to miscuing or scooping (based on what appears in the video); therefore, there is no reason to judge the "mistake" as intentional. What do you think?

You must have had teachers in school that liked asking "trick" questions. :grin:

I think some of the shots in the quiz are "challenging" calls, but I don't think any of them are "tricky" (except maybe the one where the CB scratches off screen ... you can hear the scratch, but you can't see it).

I've added the following sentence to the answer sheet to help improve people's scores a little:

NOTE – You can be lenient with yourself on the “TOUGH CALL” rulings, provided you understood the issues, and your comments addressed any uncertainty.​

I have a fairly large screen resolution, so the videos appear smaller than most. On top of that, the resolution of the video could have been clearer. So, I too think some of them would be easier in person. But, IM talking about maybe 5 or 6 shots.

Excellent point. I agree with you. I checked with Bob also just to be safe. Good job finding the first mistake! This is clearly a fair hit. I will update the answer sheet and add a note to the video. Now your score is 86! Good work.

You meant "not frozen," right? In this shot, there is a small gap ... so the double hit is clear.

I have to say, one thing I learned from this quiz that surprised me was how you can tell which object ball is hit first sometimes based not on which OB moved first but by the resulting direction of the CB and which tangent line it follows. Clever!
 
I Scored a 78%. I thought I would do better. I learned a few things, thanks for posting. I think to captain any league team you must get 75 or higher. I know it is good for the game to get things like the test out there. I hope everybody has a chance to take the test and learn from mistakes. There will always be arguments, hopefully fewer with more education!

For the shots where we thought the call isn't clear from the video or circumstances, we have marked the answers with "TOUGH CALL" (and have added additional comments). The instructions on the answer sheet recommend lenient grading for these shots. If you feel there are additional shots that should be marked "TOUGH CALL," please let us know so we can reevaluate them.

You must be better at this than Bob. It took him quite a few tries to skim the 1-ball and still make the 9-ball, and he is a very good shooter. There certainly wasn't any reason to try this shot in the video. That's why I thought the scoop was clearly "unintentional," given the situation (although, we did "intentionally" create the shot for the quiz :wink:).

Thanks. It did take a long time. Bob and I spent an entire day on the raw video for the quiz, and I spent about 20 hours editing the video and creating the documents. Bob also put up with lots of calls and e-mails from me double checking things with him before posting the results. But we both think the time was well spent, if people put the videos to good use.

I think the instructional videos will be even more useful. I hope to finish those within a couple of weeks.
