Laminate trimmer

What is your recommendation for a <=$100.00 laminate trimmer? I have a PC 7310 and a Kress, neither of which I want to move from their dedicated tasks. I can get another PC 7310 for $80.00 shipped and a Freud (sp?) for about the same amount. The trimmer will be used for parting off and possibly making ring billets.

Sounds as though you need 2 instead of one. I would probably go with the PC myself. Freud is known more for their bits and blades and such as they are for their electrical tools. For a cut off tool or for that matter a billet cutter, either one should be sufficient as they don't run for that long of a period so not as much wear and tear. I got a flier from Rockler's the other day where they have their Freud on sale for 59.99.

Go to Lowes and get the yellow DeWalt laminate trimmer.

It is the same router as the Porter Cable. I have a dozen of them for used for various things. I get parts for the PC 7310 to keep them going. They are identical. You can replace brushes and bearings, but when the commutator gets so worn that it eats brushes, I just buy another one.

These things run about 6 hours a day all week, so we go through them, but for the money I can't beat them.

Thanks all for the help. Both the Freud and the Bosh might be O.K. but I can't tell for certain that it will easily mount to my cross slide. I know the PC has a taped hole I can readily use to mount it. The DeWalt is about $30.00 more locally than the PC so for virtually the same machine it becomes a matter of saving a few bucks on the front end.

Those Brass 1/8" shank adapters run out. I can see it when running. No Pride in quality....:mad:

It was made by a CNC Company, so, I assumed it was accurate..
I could have made it myself. Brass bar stock and 1/8" drill and set screw.
Same results...
Clowns.. Caught me!! ... I never learn..

Joey,

Would'nt that one be a little to beefy to fit in the tool post on the lathe since
you need to fixate around the main body of the machine?

Like the Kress and the others, they have a smaller OD collar to grip on so I
guess these would be easier to use for cutting rings, threads and the like?

Have been reading all evening and the story seems to repeat ;
Many manufacturers/brands which all look the same... Very frustrating
to cut down to the bone and figure which is the best.

I have a sneaking feeling that you don't always get that much
more by doubling the price....

The router in post 11 is what we use. Dewalt bought Porter Cable a while back and they 2 routers are identical. The parts guys always want to argue with me when I say the 2 are the same, go figure! I just don't say anything anymore.

Stoney, where did you find the PC routers, and for how much? I still buy a few a year because the commutators are worn out and they eat brushes. The local service center can "Overhaul" them, but it costs more than the new DeWalt from Lowes. I just put bearings and brushes in them until the commutator is gone and then I chunk them. I could always use a good source.

Royce - I found the PC7310 at Amazon.com when doing a Google search for PC7310 laminate trimmer. They were $80.25 with free shipping. They said they were in stock but when I checked on my order this A.M. they had an expected ship date of the 20th. Don't know if that is SOP for Amazon but over 5 business days for processing befor the item is shipped seems a bit excessive.

That is a good price!

I will buy a couple and see how long they keep them up. This router is discontinued and has been replace by the Dewalt.

I might just buy a bunch of them, maybe!

I just ordered one of these of these kits off of Amazon for 109 something delivered. I bought it for my oldest son who does finish trim. He said he didn't like using a router for hinge work as they are to bulky. He doesn't like the trimmer he now has as it's not easy enough to control. We looked at a Freud a couple days ago that is on sale at Rocklers for 60.00 but it even looks cheaply made. He didn't want to spend this much on a trimmer but the variable speed and soft start certainly would be nice. It runs from 16,000 - 35,000 rpm. That comes in really handy if you are using both small and larger bits.
