U.S. Amateur Championship Tournament

Are any of you planning on entering the U. S. Amateur Championship Tournament?

http://www.usamateurchampionship.com/

Have any played in it before? If so how did you do?

What are your opinions, thoughts, advice, comments, and etc?

Thanks

i'm planning on doing it this year. i know a few of the guys who have qualified here in the past two years and one of the women (betty sessions, has finniished 2nd in 07 and 3rd last year) are brutally good. most of the qualifiers i know from GA. shoot in either my APA divisions or my BCA division and they are pretty much don't miss or they will run out players (7's and 9's in apa 8 ball and 9 ball respectively and 9's in bca which is the highest bca rank we have). they have all broken and ran on my ass more racks than i care to remember:banghead: so i am not sure how well i will do seeing as how i can run out - but don't all that often:shrug:. but i want to get out and play the better players to see how i fare against them and if i can bring my best game under pressure.

I'm going to enter again this year. Last two years just missed qualifying by a match. I hope to do well this year since the championship round is in Tampa this year, 10-15 minute drive for me and is a place that I like to play at.

I haven't tried to qualify since 2005. I came within 2 matches of making it. I have been playing well so we will see. always a challenge. Have to get a good draw but eventually you have to beat a top notch player to advance. I love the format!

I am in. Most of the times I get my a$$ kicked because most of the people that go are SL7 and SL8 and good SL6.
Last year I was 2 rounds away from the top spot in my area so I did not suck as bad.
It is a great experience. Usually what I do is play on 2 or 3 big tournaments before competition and do some drills at home for practice. The tournaments are good because you get used to the big pressure.

I went last year. I got to the finals and was up 7-3 on a race to 11 and I blew it. I haven't decided whether or not I'm going back this year.

I am looking forward to trying to bring the title back home to Tampa,FL.

Best of luck to you Jason (Richko I assume.) From what I have heard/seen you are playing real well.

I remember watching you and Mark Mosher bashing heads for the cheese several years ago :-)

Definitely, I totally recommend it for everybody. I couldn't get get my nerves together last year and crapped out after 2 rounds. This year will be different I know what to expect.

i played in it years ago and it was a great experience. the first 2 years i played in it, the championships were in vegas and the last year i played in it they were in maryland. if you play pool for the love of the game, i highly recommend giving it a shot.

I signed up lastyear, but decided not to play when I realized there was no money in it! An entry fee to the US open isn't enough to make me play in multiple tournaments for free! It may sound bad but I just think they could put up some prize money to go with the trophy!

No money?!? Where does all the entry fees go?

Realistically I am don't think I would get in the money anyways but I expect the $50-$100 per player going back to the players. Or at least a portion.

Michell Monk here, I won in 2006 and 3rd in 2007....couldn't play last year because of the spirit tour...but I plan on playing since it's here in florida!
See you all soon!

The prize is paid entry, lodging and travel to a pro event.
For the men it is the US open....for the women, they have a choice of a classic tour event.

Forgive me if I come across as ignorant. I did sign up for this and I believe a packet is being sent to me with more details. Is this prize given to only the one person who wins the championship? I would imagine they are having the qualifiers all over the country at $50 a pop and then a additional $50 or so if you make it to the championship in Florida.

It's a lot of fun, Robert Hall always does extremely well, Jason R is a monster too. You will typically find some very strong south eastern players at this thing along with some of the bigger pool enthusiasts from around the country. The lack of prize fund kind of deters some good shooters from playing especially ones that live across the country. It definitely will give you a nice cross section of amateur pool though, and there is usually some good action there.

My advice to people who want to play....PLEASE PRACTICE YOUR 8 BALL GAME! I find a lot of the 9 Ball play to be fairly equalized there and the 8 Ball players tend to take it off. It's a mixed game set format and I can't tell you how many times people will get beat going into the 8 Ball portion with a score of 6-2.
