OB Skid?

PJ was apparently read a higher class of fairy tale as a wee lad than I was. For those who, like me, never got beyond the big bad wolf, here it is:
The Princess and the Pea by Hans Christian Andersen
Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess; but she would have to be a real princess. He travelled all over the world to find one, but nowhere could he get what he wanted. There were princesses enough, but it was difficult to find out whether they were real ones. There was always something about them that was not as it should be. So he came home again and was sad, for he would have liked very much to have a real princess.
One evening a terrible storm came on; there was thunder and lightning, and the rain poured down in torrents. Suddenly a knocking was heard at the city gate, and the old king went to open it.
It was a princess standing out there in front of the gate. But, good gracious! what a sight the rain and the wind had made her look. The water ran down from her hair and clothes; it ran down into the toes of her shoes and out again at the heels. And yet she said that she was a real princess.
"Well, we'll soon find that out," thought the old queen. But she said nothing, went into the bed-room, took all the bedding off the bedstead, and laid a pea on the bottom; then she took twenty mattresses and laid them on the pea, and then twenty eider-down beds on top of the mattresses.
On this the princess had to lie all night. In the morning she was asked how she had slept.
"Oh, very badly!" said she. "I have scarcely closed my eyes all night. Heaven only knows what was in the bed, but I was lying on something hard, so that I am black and blue all over my body. It's horrible!"
Now they knew that she was a real princess because she had felt the pea right through the twenty mattresses and the twenty eider-down beds.
Nobody but a real princess could be as sensitive as that.
So the prince took her for his wife, for now he knew that he had a real princess; and the pea was put in the museum, where it may still be seen, if no one has stolen it.
There, that is a true story.
The End
Shane/princess is more sensitive to skids/peas than the average peasant? Yeah, but his odds of finding a pea under his mattress are no worse than the average guy's. Peas under the mattress are a weird, rare, and afaik uncontrollable occurrence. The pea might cost him more or bother him more since everything else about his sleeping conditions is so perfect. But he doesn't have to worry about unexpected peas popping up more than 1 in 1,000 times, just like you or I, and if it does happen he must handle it the same as you or I, preferably with more graciousness than the storied princess. I am giving this analogy the 6 and torturing it >_<
How about this one:
Monetary fines are used as punishments/deterrents for traffic violations like speeding. Is a $100 fine for speeding the same punishment for the behavior for an $8/hour hamburger flipper as it is for Warren Buffett? Or is it in effect a different punishment?
The author Robert Heinlein once advocated corporal punishment for traffic offenses to address what he saw as an injustice here...
Different Mike because Buffet would give the ticket to his attorney who would get it postponed for up to 2 years before it came to court, and it would be dismissed. He would only have to pay a nominal court cost fee.
And I am pretty sure Buffet has his attorney on retainer.

OB skid ruined a record-breaking 14.1 run I had two days ago. I'm still pissed.

Seems to happen most often on 30-40% cuts that are hit softly with top, inside or no english. A little outside english or draw will usually prevent it. The key factor seems to be the soft hit, the 30- 40% cut angle and the no english. Anytime these 3 come together watch out for that skid! You can aim to over cut it or just add some outside spin to keep the balls from sticking together as long.
Basically what happens is the balls stick together momentarily and then release causing the OB to "skid" approx one ball width and then start rolling. Results in an undercut of half pocket or more. Happens a lot in a a pressure game where a player has those soft little cuts and they baby it with no spin. Oops skid and a hanger....and then they throw the cue across the room and scream! :grin:
