My short-lived APA experience. (long post)

mongoose...What makes you think I would accept you as a student? You're correct...I am a well-respected instructor, mostly because I have INTEGRITY. I offer honest knowledge, at a fair price.

As far as attitude goes...I'll say it again. If you believe it's okay to CHEAT, by deliberately sandbagging (some players call it 'handicap management'), then you're no better than Richardson...someone who will do whatever they can, by whatever deceitful means, to win a game/match/session/tournament (take your pick). Best of luck with your pool game!

HAHAHA accept me as a student... that is quite childish Scott. Don't worry I certainly wouldn't ask. And I don't cheat thanks... when I played the APA I was handicapped the highest in both 8 & 9... everyone I played with was ENCOURAGED to improve & not sandbag. You can preach about this & that with the APA all you want there are 2 sides to every story & opinions. I think your head is a bit too swelled to see anything but what is inside your bubble. Good luck to you also SIR. :)

If you're so damn good, why do you find it necessary to sandbag/cheat?

I would prefer to lose honestly, than win by cheating.

Good question, mostly because i wanted to play with a group of my friends and be successful in vegas. We did and we were.

Well after reading your other post Gene, where you missed 3 balls, misplayed a safety, and scratch 2 times in 1 game, I would say you are overrated.

There is nothing real pleasant about watching 2 or 3's play, it's like going in for a root canal. Players don't even use their brains until they are a 4. And I didn't even mention about having to explain the same rules every week to them, or how to have manners when you play league.

I have happened to have played in the APA, VNEA, and the BCA leagues, in that order over the years. The APA will always have sandbagging problems because of the way they handicap, too few levels of classification. The VNEA is better, but the best and most accurate handicap system goes to the BCA. The VNEA has a little sandbagging, the BCA doesn't. You are what you play in the BCA. Why? Because your handicap will be from 1-75, depending on what you shoot, not 1 to 8 like the APA. Think of it, for every level in the APA, there are 9 BCA levels.

All the leagues have their place in Pool, but most players that take the game seriously outgrow the APA, and usually go on to another league.

Whooo there! So I had 6 "misses" in 10 racks and you think I am over rated? Maybe we could play a little when you are in Vegas? I'll take the 7 out since I am over rated, okay? By the way 9 is the highest in APA 9-ball and I just went from a 7 to an 8 so I am probably on the low side of an 8.

And you cheated to achieve your goals.
IMHO, you are a loser.

Hey Rich it is sad isn't it. I don't know what's worse, baggers or the one's that no matter how you explain the system and how to beat the bagger's they won't do it and still complain about the system.

Abraham Lincoln said It is better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I'l see you at the pol hall, I might do the tournament tonight.

That's a good one. Another good one (I can't remember exactly how it goes and don't know who said it) is "Never argue with a fool; a stranger passing by won't know which of you is the fool."

I'm not calling anyone a fool, I just always think of that quote when people are arguing and there's no chance either side will give at all...

Thanks. I probably overreacted. But heck I have worked hard to get to where I am at. I freely admit it was not one of my better matches yet I had a chance to win if I just played better. That was really my point. I don't like it when players always have an excuse. It is never their fault they lost....Well I have news for you when I lose it is always because you played better and I played worse. If I want to win I just have to play better, right?

That is right. Though I am not a fan of the APA I think that is where a lot of the complaining comes in about handicaps. Some people can't analise the mistakes & opportunities they had to win when they lose. So it automatically goes to the other guy is not handicapped right. Comming up from the lower ranks in any league to become a higher SL level is definatly a lot of time, work, & desire to become better. That next SL 9 ranking to those like yourself actually means something when you aceive it.

I am proud of my achievements unlike some who seem to pride themselves on how low they can keep their skl. I want to be a skl 7 (8-ball) and a skl 9 (9-ball) and be able to just tell my opponent to "come get some." If I lose then congrats to you. If I win at least you can't say I was underrated! LOL When you are the highest rating who can accuse you of sandbagging? Although I do have a friend who is a strong 7/9 who was called a cheating sandbagger! (By a guy who is a 5 on his best day nonetheless)

You cant beat the baggers, thats why they win the money in vegas.

lol

You guys sure get worked up about this thing, ill bet most of you wouldnt play in a tournament unless it was handicapped somehow.

I haven't read this whole thread, but it seems a lot of the people who posted are higher-ranked players who wouldn't benefit from a handicapped tourney. For those that aren't SL7s in 8ball and 9s in 9ball, I think the mere fact that they're on here posting shows their interest in pool goes far beyond leagues and handicapped events.

Actually, I play non-handicapped tournaments quite often as long as the cost to get there and enter is not significantly more than my potential winnings! I have played some very good players in these tournaments including Buddy Hall, Tony Crosby, Nick Varner, Richard Broumpton, John Ditoro, Mark Coats, Richie Richeson, etc... I may not beat these guys but I sure give it my best effort and I have learned a little something from each of them.

I play in non handi-capped tournaments all the time, most of which I have an honest chace of winning or placing in. That being said why would I enter any event handi- capped or not that I didn't have a chance of winning. Anyone who play's below there speed in my humble opinion is less than the slime left on the ground by a slug. No one minds losing in a straight up fight but to be taken advantage of are the things that get people hurt. If winning like that by cheating not disgraces the game but it lessens people as human beings. And, people wonder why there are so many problems in the world.

LOL @ relating dumping in APA to worldwide problems.

i think one of the big flaws of league pool is the team factor. pool is an individual sport.

i would probably play if there was no handicap and i was my own team. they could do something similiar to the NFL schedule. i think this would cut out all the people that dont care about the game because they would get smoked, week after week and say screw it.

Very good post, sending rep your way. And one of the proven things about the APA is its very good about getting new players to play.

A single person league would be kind of cool. With a long race every week or something.

No more so than many other sports, such as darts, archery, bowling, fencing, shooting, swimming, and others. All involve individuals competing against themselves, the clock, or one opponent, but all are played as team sports too. In pool at least, the team aspect has a social aspect. In some teams, the social aspect is primary -- a bunch of guys or gurls has a great excuse to hang out in a bar once a week with the "we're involved in a sports league" stamp of approval. To the pool purists this approach may be insulting and sometimes trouble develops because of the opposing views of what's more important, pool or drinking and socializing, but hey, remember we're hanging out in bars here.

League is not for everyone. Not every league is for every league player. If you don't like league, don't sign up. If you don't like a particuar league, don't play in it. If there are no leagues that you like and you still feel the need to play, start your own league. Whining doesn't change anything.

The situation you have just described is called a "tournament".
