John Barton suggested that I should be sharing my knowledge of pool on this forum...I think it might be another one of his good ideas. Here it goes.

I will try to field any questions that come to this thread. Don't be shy! I'll do my best to answer it in one post. If I don't convey my point well enough let me know, I will try it again.

I want to be a positive part of AZB, I don't have much to offer in the way of support besides this thread...

I am willing to help anyone that wants/needs it, so, even if in the past we have tried to kill each other on this web site, I have forgiven and forgotten. I invite all/everyone. Thanks for your time!

First off, Thank you Mr. Masse. You are one pro that does things on a pool table that I still do not understand. So of course I have some questions. I have seen videos of you and I just can't replicate the stroke. How do you generate such a stroke in the 2 or 3 inches when stroke down onto the Qball towards the table??? I can do a decent masse but nothing close to what you or Eric Yao can do. Please try to reframe from answering "Practice". We all know it takes practice.

Once again thank you for being apart of the forum.

Good question...When I want more POWER (power = distance before curve and/or faster speed of cue ball return)

longer bridge = power. Shorter bridge = higher percentage of makes.

It is very important to develope a masse stroke...This will allow you to have a much longer descent into the CB. = speed and/or power

I can tell you what worked for me, I took a 20 oz empty coke bottle and started to stroke into the bottle. This is an old trick for stroke training, it works with masse as well...Stand the bottle upright and same drill.

Sorry, I know you said no practice. You must realize that at no other point in your life will you use your body in this way, so muscles must be trained.

One more tid bit about this...

I don't know if you ever took any martial arts. One thing that helps me create power while using a short bridge (I think) is I breath out just as I swing the cue, just like I am swinging a jab. Just a little breath is all it takes but, this will help on the short jab stroke your asking about.

Hope this answers your question.

O.k here we go.....is there a formula to make the adjustment in point of aim when using english? Or does it just come with repetition. For example: I'm having trouble with a left angled shot to the corner pocket when using right side english....... just cant picture the proper point of aim, lets say I'm using 2 tips of english for this shot and the cue ball is not more than 8 inches away.

Jamison,

I'm not sure if the guy above me asked this or not.... but how do you aim a masse? Do you have a functional way of sighting/aiming while playing to get the CB to curve around the obstructing balls?

Are there any hints/tricks/secrets you can share?

This thread can be cool. I should have asked this way long ago :)

Is it possible for you to get a diagram up...? I don't think I am quite getting the picture from your post. I don't want to give you a answer that won't be any help.

Yes, Thank you for asking this one...I have always used the verticle axis to aim masse shots. I aim just like you see guys aim jump shots, then go verticle.

Lets use wei table on this one...give me a min it's my first time using the new wei table...

Sorry I need to learn how to diagram (cuetable). Lets use "centerpockets" avitar(the one just below your first post) and move the cueball 2 dotted lines to the left. This is the shot I'm talking about. If I'm using 2 cuetips of right english at 3'o'clock how do you pick your point of aim? Right know I'm just going by trial and error.

Your right that one does kinda sting sometimes. I guess your trying to make it and go around three rails for shapes...

Every time I go to a pool table I shoot this shot around 100+ times.

I started hitting it with alot less speed and let the spin take the ball around the table. This seems to be the answer for me. (For Now),more about this in a second)

I would practice different amounts of follow through on your stroke for this shot. Don't really change the speed to much, you will find that the follow through changes the aiming point quite a bit. Find the amount of follow through that allows you to aim at the ball where you want. This method might help. There are many ways to aim at this ball. Just remember softer is better.

Softer will allow you to see where the cue ball hits the OB, why it isn't falling. Try less side spin, softer and more follow through this will normaly straighten the shot up pretty good. Plus you will notice the ball will travel alot further than you think because of the long follow through.

After you get softer down, then try hitting it harder you will see the difference. The hole gets smaller the harder you hit it...plus the cue ball will go around easier if you hit it soft, try it and try to get back to me...

I think as we change in life as we grow our perception changes. We must adapt to our changing every so often...I try to explain to my students and to myself that every day is a different day. Yesterday my shots were all hitting a little tiny bit to the left, today so far they all went in pretty good that does not mean that six hours from now when I'm tired, that they won't all be hitting the rail two inches to the right...

ALll kinds of things can change our perception of the balls. Health issues can change our perceptions high/low blood pressure, blood sugar even allergies...this list goes on and on...

I guess my point of this long write is, you must stay on top of this one. It is in fact all to do with you and what works for you..

Wow. No offense to anyone else but your knowledge is a breath of fresh air. Such a pleasure to have you here

...how do you aim a masse?

As usual, you can find the technical version of your answer on Dr. Dave's excellent website:

Dr Dave's aiming masse shots_Page_1.jpg

This is an excerpt from one of Dr. Dave's articles on pool and billiards, which can be found here: http://billiards.colostate.edu/physics/index.html (click on "Pool and Billiards Physics Principles by Coriolis and Others").

Dave, I hope you consider this small theft an acceptable way to promote your site.

I've read the BAR piece before. I was curious to know how Jamison aimed/executed his shots during normal play (to see if there was a different method among those who actually win masse championships).

Jamison - how does the BAR method differ from yours - or is it the same?

Dave

Why would you stoop so low as to promote dr dave on JAMISON'S thread.

"Stoop so low"? LOL.

I'm sure Jamison understands better than you do that starting a thread on a discussion forum is an invitation for open discussion, not a territorial claim.

And, by the way, Dr. Dave's answer adds information to Jamison's answer, giving Spidey (and other readers) more complete information. That's the important thing, isn't it?

I got a question for Mr. Masse then.

-I am curious as to why following through so much on the cue ball makes so much more draw/more spin. You have a video on Youtube that you explain, if you do not drop the elbow you will not get as much draw etc..Are you trying to keep the tip on the cueball longer?.

-Also where do you want most of your acceleration in a stroke, right before you hit the cueball would get maximum results?.

-What is the difference between someone who is punching the ball, and someone who is stroking the ball?. Is the person who is punching the ball, or jabbing the ball decelerating through the cueball?
