How Would You Play This? 4/20/09

I set this table up and played it out. Stripes won 3 out of 4 times Using the cross bank. That was on a 9ft Diamond though. You did say on a bar table, but you didn't specify what size pockets.

Ray

When you played it out did solids immediately go for the runout after the cross banked safe? Because yeah, if the solids player actually plays for the runout the cross bank is good. But if the solids player shows as much forthought as the guy shooting the cross bank on the stripes and elects to make it a chess match and the stripes with only 2 balls on the table while the solids has 7 then winning the safety battle 75% of the time as stripes the solids player is doing something very very wrong.

Neil,

I appreciate your perspective on how to play this against you. How would you play this is determined by more factors than simply here are the balls. All should be considered.

1. Barbox
a. what bar box? Valley with buckets, Diamond with pro cut?
2. Balls - What balls and cueball.
3. Player - What is the speed of the person playing solids.
a. If you attempt to run out and miss the long rail bank even a novice could run out.

True you may be so good that you can get out from anywhere, but the point of this discussion is to help people see other options to consider. Wouldn't you agree?

Ray

The only shot stripes has that is concievable to miss is the bank on the 8 itself. If you hit it with the proper weight there is a very strong likelyhood that it at least stops in the jaws and makes the 6 ball a very big pain in the neck. Most novice players won't get out from there with the 8 in the jaws of the 6-ball pocket, most higher level players are probably going to attempt to hook you behind the 6 by making the 2, probably trying to also get a blocker on the 1 rail long kick (the 3 is almost natural for this), in an attempt to get ball in hand to take the 6 short side and run out from there.

You're absolutely correct about that. Miss the 8ball and hang it up and you still leave yourself a chance at winning. Close may actually count here.

Your balls didn't show up, but I'm guessing you put the 11 in front of the pocket. Here's what a good player then does to you- assuming he's not going to run out, which he can. He is going to bank your 12 down by the 6 to where there is no pocket for it, he can bank your 12 over by the 3 and 4 leaving it very near the rail to where you have tough position to bank it, or he can just pocket your 11 for you. Now, in all 3 cases you get ball in hand. What's your move now? You still have the same bank on the 8 that you had to start with.

You saw my shot correctly. You're a good player and I think you know what you're talking about. I realize I can't win from the safety that I played, but my opponent can't either. I didn't want to try do go for an impossible out and break out the 1 and give him a chance to run out.

I like your return safety in banking the 12 by the 6. That's a good move and I'd probably just have to break open the 12 and 6 and play more safeties. You're still not out because you don't have a shot on the 1.

If you bank the 12 near the 3 and 4, I might be able to make it off the 2 and draw straight back into the 8 and break it open. I might be able to bank the 12 cross side and go 3 rails into the 8 also, depending on where you leave me. My 11 is hanging on the pocket so I could win from that shot if I break out the 8.

If you make my 11 for me. I can make the 12 and play position for a cross corner bank on the 8 in the pocket nearest the 6. It's a tough shot and position play, but I could win from that too.

I like my chances with my safety because you can't win from there and I can if you choose 2 of 3 of your shots.

This is my response to your safety - not only do I move out my 1ball but now I take away your only opportunity to win in one inning by taking away the bank on the 8ball. Your next inning will be the last inning where I'll allow you to pocket a ball.

EDIT - I apologize for the sloppy diagramming. Obviously, I am cutting the 1ball into the 8 so that I achieve a legal hit and tie up the 8ball.

No one....

going for the bump on the 5??????? Why not? It's a free shot, and if it hangs you can always play the 8 into it... make the 5 and block the pocket with the 8 for the win...

No one likes the inside juice off the 12??????? :grin-square:

Are you really accomplishing anything with your shot? You're breaking out the 1 ball and tying up the 5 ball. You're right back where you started.

Most likely if I'm in an important game then I'm probably playing someone of my caliber. If I am, and if I was the solids, I would welcome for my opponent to play something other than trying to run out. Chances are that if I get back to the table stripes would have a very small chance of winning this game. I would have too many options available to me. You may get back to the table but at my choosing. Meaning that I would use eight ball skills to solve my problems before starting my run. Once I would start my run all balls would have access to a pocket and luck would mostly be eliminated. If I then don't get out, there's no one to blame but myself for not executing correctly.

With this line of thought if I was stripes I would feel that my best chance to win would be to continue the run even if I felt that I would have to bank the eight. But like I mentioned in an earlier post, I would pocket the 12 ball with inside english to move the one and not the eight to insure that I would always be able to see the 11 ball. If I failed to move the one the I would settle with making the eleven ball and position for the eight ball bank to where the six is at.

However with a lesser skilled opponent that I felt would let me back to the the table with a chance to win I would consider a safety.

I like the inside on the 12. If I don't move the 1 I play for the bank. If I move the one with no position to get back to the 8 I still have the bank. The shot on the 12 is fairly easy and so is the position. I set this up 10 times trying to move the 1 and got out 8 times. I like those odds. I'm not a strong player so a lot of the other guys should have better success at this.
I will say that I agree with playing for the bank but it wouldn't be my first choice of the two.

Excellent point. Make the 5 and that's ballgame. Hang it and you still get precisely what I was trying to accomplish.

yep

I like the inside on the 12. If I don't move the 1 I play for the bank. If I move the one with no position to get back to the 8 I still have the bank. I like this shot too. I just can't draw the dam table. I would hit the one and make the 11 and draw off the bottom rail with low outside and play almost one pocket position for the 8 in the same pocket since I moved the one. If I miss the 1 - I would play to bank the 8.

Actually, I'm accomplishing one thing - Stripes simply can't win now. Yes, I'll have to address the 8ball again but I'll do it when I'm most comfortable. If I have to give back the table, I'll do it knowing my opponent will need multiple innings to get out.

Actually, your shot wasn't too bad. If you fall good on the 7, you can break up the 5, 8. I'd probably respond with this shot, trying to give myself another ball to break out the 8 with.

Well, we can go on about this all day (I think we have already). You have to admit, if stripes doesn't win from the beginning, you enter into an exchange where solids has a huge edge. Yes, you still have to execute and one mistake can cost either player but an intelligent 8ball player with modest skills shooting as solids will have to go waaaaaaaay out of character to give up this game.

With stripes, there just wasn't much of a choice to duck and try to slowly gain a tactical advantage against a good player at a later point in a game. Stripes was at a disadvantage no matter what. I still like my option better than banging the balls and trying to get lucky open something up and get lucky earlier in the rack, likely leaving solids a good opportunity for a run out.
