Allison Fisher and Kim Shaw Wrap-Up Military Tour in Kosovo
APRIL 21, 2009, CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA
Allison Fisher and Kim Shaw just finished a three-day Military Tour in Kosovo where they were both the entertainers and the entertained. Allison and Kim were brought over to boost the morale of the troops with their extraordinary pool skills. Allison says, “It was a real honor and privilege for us to spend time with the troops in Kosovo. Everyone made us feel very welcome and took time out of their schedules to educate us about the various training facilities and their way of life. It was a remarkable experience, I will not forget.”
Allison and Kim experienced the K-9 and Aviation Units, where they were attacked by military trained Belgium Shepherd dogs and sat in the cockpit of a Black Hawk helicopter.
A special thanks goes out to all the troops and coordinators who provided Allison and Kim tremendous hospitality!

On another front honoring our veterans, Ewa Lawnrece came to a Nashua pool hall and dazzled those in attendance with her trick shots – including the Evel Knievel and the Railroad Shot – and took on all comers to raise money for the New England Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

The chapter is running an 8-ball tournament today at the Boston Billiards here and in Worcester, Mass. The best eight teams will compete in the finals in Worcester on Sunday, said the chapter's sports director Brad Carlson. Laurance will make an appearance before the finals in Worcester, too, he said.
Teams of two paid $60 to enter the tournament, and others donated smaller amounts to shoot a 9-ball rack against Laurance.
Tournament registration was held Friday, but last-minute teams can register this morning, according to Nick Daponde, Boston Billiards general manager.
"It's giving back to a great cause," he said. "Anything we do to raise money for them is a great way to give back."
The money will fund the chapter's sports program for paralyzed veterans, Carlson said. "We have so many disabled athletes," he said. "We care about our veterans, and that's what this is for. The money is so needed for our veterans."
Last year the tournament raised about $13,000, Carlson, a retired U.S. Marine, said. The chapter runs half a dozen sports programs, including basketball, bowling and skiing clinics.
Scott Kleiner, a Nashua resident, came close to winning his rack against Laurance on Friday. He missed a shot on the 9-ball and lost when Laurance banked it the length of the table and into a corner pocket. "It was cool," Kleiner said. "I almost had the nine, but you know. Things happen. I think anything you can do for veterans is awesome."
David McArdle, of Wakefield, Mass., has been playing at Boston Billiards since it opened nearly 20 years ago in Boston and has seen Laurance in person several times. He even beat her about five years ago by running the table, he said.
McArdle will take part in the tournament today. "It helps the veterans," he said. "It's a good combination. You get a day of pool with good friends, and you get to help the veterans."
This year is the second Laurance took part in the tournament. She said she appreciated being able to help veterans, especially by playing a game she loves and one where people confined to a wheelchair can excel.
"A cause like this, the Paralyzed Veterans of America, it goes without saying I'm honored to be a part of it."
Laurance emigrated from Sweden as a teenager and has been playing pool for close to 30 years. Known as the "Striking Viking," she's one of the best female trick shot artists in the world
Before becoming the current International and World Cup Trick Shot champion, she won numerous world and national 9-ball titles, was ranked number one in the world and earned multiple player of the year awards.
She also does color commentary for ESPN's Championship Billiards broadcasts, according to her Web site.
