How good is/was Scotty Townsend?

Scotty is at the top with very few others on my favorite player list. First event I did in the deep south at Pockets in Dothan,AL, he did not have a cue. He rented a red McDermott plain jane from the owner Ronald Ready, then proceded to go undefeated.

And in case you think he is a middle tier player, ask Mr. Archer how he liked it. I think in the few years of play at JOB's, Mr Cues, and a couple of other spots that I cant remember at this time, Johnny was one for five against Scotty. And this included some 9-foot table tourneys.

Annnnnnnnnnnnd, whatever outrageous stories you hear about him, they are ALL TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I played him years ago, he not only had the boots but the matching belt with a big a$$ buckle. Nice look on him.

I never knew someone could make me want to wear cowboy boots and a belt buckle! Scotty is the coolest hillbilly in the world!:thumbup:

When I was Living in North West Florida he was to be feared on any one-pocket or 9 ball table.

I count myself lucky to consider Scotty to be a good friend. Since when does/did Scotty ever play one hole? Having said that, Scotty may be the best PERSON out of champions. If Scotty likes you, he would literally give you the shirt off of his back. God help you if he didn't like you, lol. For anyone that doesn't know Scotty, this story should sum him up. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT I AM PARAPHRASING HERE, AS I DON'T KNOW THE EXACT WORDS. Warren Kiamco(or his rep if you like) asked Scotty in Olathe at the ring game if he "how about we give you the 8 and play some sets". Scotty says "how about you keep the 8, and we play some sets". Long story short, Scotty gets the cash. That isn't a word for word, but ANYONE that knows Scotty knows this is right in line, lol.

I'm pretty sure he won a big pro event in Vegas in the late 80's or early 90's. I think the prize was cash plus a new sports car. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it was Scotty who won it.

I only remember Scotty telling me that played 1 pocket one time...don't remember who they guy was but remember Scotty saying it was the only time he played the game & gave the guy either 9-7 or 10-7 & won like $4000...the guy wasn't a real player,player but had money & that's all he played was 1 hole...And the thing with Kiamco...the game was to be with the 8 originally but was stalling for whatever reason & Scotty was getting impatient & ready to play so he goes over to Warren & says come on lets play....forget the 8..that's just a excuse to lose with..i'll play you even...lol...only Scotty....gotta luv the guy.

You will hear more stories about Scotty Townsend than ANY OTHER POOL PLAYER. He is a legend. As to his ability then and now, you've got more than enough information about how he plays from the rest of the posters. I don't want to tell you how many times he's giving me the 5 ball and beat my brains in (and that's on a big table).:embarrassed2:

What you will always hear is that Scotty:
1. Will gamble. Many times he will take the worst of it and when he outruns the nuts, he doesn't make a big deal of it and he'll make you like losing.

2. Plays hard for his stake horse's money. (Never heard anyone say he had dumped).

3. He is liked by pool players and fans everywhere he goes.

4. Scotty Townsend is a man's man and the ladies think he is the boom in dynamite.

5. You will seldom ever hear him put the bite on anyone and if he does, you will get paid.

6. Scotty's Book would be a BEST SELLER. He truly is the best story teller of all of the players. The ironic thing is while the stories are outrageously funny and mind-bending, they are all true. LOL. Even the one about him jumping off the Huey P. Long Bridge in New Orleans an d swimming across the Mississippi River.

7. Scotty will get in a scuffle but only if it's necessary.

8. He carries weight like a Bedouin camel.

9. He does have a slight accent.

10. Yeah, he's my friend.

Scotty's biggest score !

I remember Scotty telling me of his biggest score ever...He beat this millionare...don't remember the name..but winds up $90,000 winner...beforehand they had agreed that the money didn't have to be payed that night...so afterward the guy says...give me a couple months so i can sell a few stocks and liquidate some cash...Scotty said no problem cuz he knew he was good for it...bout a month later a friend of Scotty called him and said..HEY !! u heard about ????.."the guy that Scotty played"...Scotty said..what ? he died...saying it as a joke..the guy says..oh u heard ? Come to find out...the guy had a heart attack & died...so Scotty never even got paid on his biggest score....talk about a bad beat !!!!

Where is Country Calvin from and is he a left hander? Months ago, we had a guy named Calvin start showing up at Shooters playing on the Challenge table for $10 or $20 a game, and he played real good. He was there 3-4 nights a week for a couple of months, and then disappeared.

Calvin is from Arkansas, lives in Texarkana,Ar./Tx., is left handed and was in Kansas installing lights at Air Ports, that what he does now, travels around the USA doing that job.

My story of scotty

Scotty Townsend came into thomaston,Ga in the early 2000's maybe 2001 or 2002. There was a viking bar table tourney there at the time with $2000added, I went there to watch. At the time I had never heard of him. He played extremely strong, so strong that his name has stuck. I remember watching him play good players and killing them. I remember him snookering himself behind a 6 ball in the final match and getting the crowd involved, meaning he walked around the table several times and saying I know I can make the 6 ball I'm just trying to figure out my shape. I laughed because I didn't think he would do it. The 6 ball was almost on the spot and the cue ball almost on the rail. He kicked the 6 in and ran out. He won the tourney, he looked real real rough, cowboy boots and a button up shirt unbuttoned, drunk with alomost a beard. He was loud and was drinking budweisers like a fish. He asked me who was the best player in town, and that I need to call him if he wasn 't there and he would give him weight. I laughed, but I didn't call anyone after what I saw earlier.
I have since went to a tourney a month or so ago in hampton,ga at sticks and scotty was there, he was just as strong as I have ever seen him play, but different.. He looked real clean cut and put together, not even drunk. I've heard that he has gotten married etc.. maybe that has changed his look :thumbup:

One hell of a guy

I could probably do a few chapters in a new book on some funny Scotty escapades that I witnessed but I'll keep them for the book. The two guys I would really like to write their biographies would be Keith
McCReady and Scotty, both would be immensely entertaining for I have been in their company many times over the past 25 or 30 years, they are both very fun to be around. :thumbup: :wink: :thumbup:

I saw Scotty play several times in the late 1990's, but only on the big table. He was a fine player, but, at least in the matches I saw, not one of the most elite. I'd say he played about Ernesto Dominguez speed back then.

Bout right for that time frame, but, SCOTTY was more explosive with a higher top end.

SCOTTY's best game was on a bar table and it didn't matter much which cueball was used.

First time i saw him play was in 81 when he roasted the mighty LOUIE ROBERTS on a bar box which, to my chagrin, lightened my wallet. When SCOTTY was at the height of his powers the list of players that liked his action on a barbox could have been counted on one hand (imo).

Probably him...when he was younger he was a "high energy" guy that epitomized "fast and loose". Would constantly sand his shaft with coarse sandpaper till it was PERFECT while he ran out with alarming redundancy.

yea i have calvin's old bill hoyt cue and the shaft are sanded down from 13mm to 11mm now

I dont wanna tell on nobody...but...

I was down the Mobile way last summer for the Breakers Tournament. Had a buddy backin Scotty for a lil bit...He was playin this cat Lil' Saul from TX. or OK. given up the 7 and the break.

This was the first and only time I've spent with Scotty.

Well their over on the Diamonds and they run through a couple sets...when all the sudden somebody makes a comment to Scotty...I can't remember if it was bout shooting a shot or his drinkin...Next thing I hear is Scotty...

"How about I put your a head in a pocket"...as he points to the table behind him. Then someone else (someone you all know) chimes in trying to calm the situation...same thing..."How bout a put your M*tha F*ckin head in a pocket too."

Man, I heard of gambling getting ugly, but I'd never seen it till this, and it wasn't even anyone he was playing.

The crazy thing about it all was when he said it, everyone in the place shut the hell up. I mean it was like a scene out of "Pool Hall Junkies," couple minutes ago it sound like a pool hall in here...now its quieter than a church. And I swear, I sat there and looked at that pocket and new it was physically impossible for what he said to happen....but I still to this day believe he could've done it...and I think so did some of the other people in there. It was just something bout the seriousness in his crazy country a$$.
