What would you do different in your shop!

Natural light and not feeling like you are in a cave. I have a building I built that is going to be my shop when I move into the new house. It has a sky light and big window that looks out on a beautiful 5 acres of fields and trees.
I am an amateur by the way but my shop is very professional. My current shop though has one small window, the ceiling is kind of low and I need lights every where. I think a pleasant environment to work in is very important. You can't be tripping all over trash everywhere. Needs to be cleaned up everyday before you lock up as well.
I hope I am up there by the end of the year. It is over 600 miles too far to drive just for the weekend.
figure out how much room you need,
then DOUBLE IT :thumbup:

I have zero windows. So the cave thing factors in for me. The only thing besides that id do is more equiptment. Youre never real finished buying the are you?

Unfortunately, I'm moving into a cave. Couple of large sky lights, but hard to find commercial space with windows or a view. Wish there was. I had
8- 220 outlets put in, plus the real bonus. The space has 3 phase to it.
Planning on picking up some of that stuff once I'm back up running. DFW isn't a large machinery market, but you can usually pick up the 3 phase cheaper than the single phase.

I wass at a customers house refelting a pool table. HE redid the floors with gypcrete then 5/8 pad then 1 inch solid cork from a tree in 12" squares I was there for 3 days and my back never hurt once and the table just barely dented the floor maybe 1/8" dent.
on my equipment i built some steps/platforms in front of my lathe, now i will put cork on the steps/ platforms I stand on for long periods. plywood with rubber was nice but the cork was the best sofar.

Ive already done it. I had a sign made that says "If Youre Smoking In Here Your Ass Better Be On Fire"
dont forget room for the bar, a urinal and bigscreen tv :thumbup:
Think about what you wish. In my shop I have a radio, 3 computers (one of which is connected to the Internet) and a television. If I would take out the television and the computer connected to the network, I could easily build an additional 50 cues a year. I figure those 2 items easily cost me 30,000.00 a year.

How true, I'm going to try and get by with just a cell phone for a while, but I'm sure the internet will squeeze it's way in eventually.

ALways add extra electrical, fire ext. I like what Jacoby did in there warehouse type setting alot of seperate rooms for most machines kept alot of noise down somewhat cleaner.

Thanks, I visited Dave and Brandon many moons ago, and really liked their set up. Definitely going to look into some of the flooring. I'm sitting here right now and my knees and feet are killing me.

i thought i put more electric plugs in than i could ever use
thought i had more room than i could ever use
and boy oh boy was i ever wrong
i need to add a half dozen plugs
knock out a wall and go another 10 feet
and would still probably be underestimating
when the weather is nice, i drag my table saw & a workbench table outside
when the weather isn't nice, it's a pain in the ass dodging everything
I am in the process of reworking my shop. Getting more workbench space will be a plus for me. I am moving the planer to a table along the wall, table saw also. This way I can walk without hitting stuff. Nothing worse than dinging a cue on machines walking by it when your spacing out.
Also making a dedicated wrap area for linen and leather. Tired of doing that on my pool table when doing leathers.
Lights. I would add more lights which I am in the summer. Spray booth is done, just need to upgrade it to pull out more air. Padded barstools for glueing up. I have wooden ones now, and they kill the rear!
A nice , huge roling toolbox to organize my stuff. I loose stuff way to much and always turns up under something else. My chuck wrench especially!
A/C. I have a wall unit but eventually I am going with a cental unit. Cheaper and more efficient. Gotta have a dehumidifier. My is huge and really helps keep my shop stable with the air running.
Drum sander is a want I have right now! For really speeding up trueing those points.
CNC is almost complete! Thanx god!!!!! Can't wait. I self built it and it is going to save tons of time and add to the shops performance.
More hanging space for wood. I used drop ceiling track and boy does it extend your space to hang. Ang cheap to put up. Used a 1x2 for the mount, and get 12 pieces on each drop ceiling runner. Got them 4 inches apart and really helped.

I would have any saw machine saw sander anything that makes large amounts of dust in it's own room then hook up a big azz super sucker down draft system. A dedicated box for the 3-phase powered machinery. Better exhaust for the booth. DRO's on everything. This is starting to sound like a wish list. Good luck with the shop.
