Just curious to see what kind of tips you prefer on your masse cues. I don't have one yet, so I've just been shooting with my regular cue. I've found I masse better with a 11.75 mm Moori Quick than a 13 mm Sniper. But I also don't mind a 13 mm Triangle med-hard, which was the stock shaft for my McDermott.
It's perplexing that you'd be more consistent with a smaller tip. As I understand it, the bigger the tip diameter, the larger the surface area of the tip hit, thus the more spin. This leads me to believe that there is more room for error in the point of contact (tips from center) with a larger diameter. But, with our competitions, I don't know that a fat tip is necessary since we don't do any extreme masse shots. Whatever works, I suppose.
As far as tip brand, I've loved the Sniper for 2 years now, though I think the Triangle tip is good too, for our purposes. Simply scuff the triangle, or tip pik the sniper and we're good to go. Bruce Barthelette shoots triangle and le pro on his two masse cues, the triangle for jump/masse shots particularly. Mike Massey swears by the Sniper, as I do.
I'm more than interested to hear what other posters have to say on the matter, too.

A larger diameter shaft pushes or squirts the cue ball more. Since a masse' shot is squirting the ball and then spin takes over, the larger tip or shaft diameter is usually preferred. For me, the mass at the tip and stiffness of the shaft makes all the difference. I like a Karomi tip for a 14mm tip, but if I make a shaft with a tip larger than 14mm, LePro is the only tip that I can find that's 15mm.

Nice cues fellas! Curious as to what components would be "Ideal" for the Masse Cue?

The recent passing of Dieckman caused me to dig up this masse cue thread.
I don't have one of his.
But I do have a Jacoby masse cue. It is the BRW version they used to make, not the "ebonized" maple one they sell now. It's a good masse cue.
But recently I accidentally stumbled upon a seriously excellent masse cue.
It was advertised on Ebay as a jump cue, which was obviously incorrect.
The price came down and I grabbed it for about $40 IIRC.
I took it to the pool hall and let me tell you, I have no idea who made it, probably some guy in his garage, but this thing does masse like it speaks French. LOL! Hits like a truck.
14.5mm tip, brass ferrule. Monster steel pin that goes God knows how far into the heavy as a train rail straight taper shaft. The joint is thick, with a monster aluminum joint collar. I have not weighed the cue yet. But it is obviously heavy.
You can see at the end is a grooved ebony butt cap (yes, it is ebony), and aluminum ring, and a nice engraved MOP medallion in the end. There are MOP dots with black dots in them and some purple-heart spears as well. Lots of detail here.
It hits like a truck and does masse like nothing I have ever tried. Whoever built this knew how to build a masse cue.
In the background is one of my antique double butterfly cues.
