I have been playing with a 1/2" Ivory ferrule on a 12.75 m.m. shaft and I love the feel. Anyone else play with the shorter ferrule? Tell me why you like how it plays.

I like a short ferrule and not capped. Is you ferrule capped? If so there can't be much of a tenon. Also with a short non-capped ferrule, the ferrule material is irrelevant. The ferrule has no effect to speak of in this case it is just a sleeve.
The obvious answer is less deflection, but I'm sure the hit is different as well. I honestly think that we can get used to almost anything, but of course there are superior combinations of materials. My local cuemaker is a Predator authorized repair guy, and he is playing with one of his own shafts with a predator style ferrule. I don't know if it's hollowed out and he's not telling, but he showed up with it in November and hasn't switched yet :wink:...Tom
Hmm, You know i been playing with ivory ferrules for years and capped and un capped is something i dont know to much about it i have the longer ferrules are those capped ? Can someone please explain The diffrence to me please. I love hearing something new about the stuff i been using for 100's of years
I have 2 Scruggs and 1 Cochran cue. All of my shafts for these have the shorter uncapped ivory ferrules. I love the way these shorter ivory ferrules feel.
Only on my 3-Cushion Cue, but it certainly has held up well over the years.
My Zinzolas have a short Ferrell and they play great,I played also with a Showman with short Ferrells and this was a Monster Hitter.Tommy, 12,75mm NV Taper and short ivory Ferrells, can not beat or ????????

A capped ferrule just means the ferrule is not a completely hollow tube.The tip is glued to the ferrule and not to the tenon. I wasn't aware they had capped ivory ferrules but I suppose it's possible.
As to short ferrules, I think they would tend to be preferred for jump cues, break cues and masse cues on the basis of strength. I don't think they would make much difference generally on regular playing cues but I haven't used one so I couldn't say about feel or deflection.

i was a hard core 1'' only capped.
about 6-8 months ago i decided to cut my ferrule in half. so now its 1/2 uncapped. much better IMO.
feedback is unbelievable. world of difference
now i offer 4 types of ferrules.
1/2 uncapped
3/4 uncapped
1'' capped or uncapped
i dont know who said if its capped there isnt much of a tennon ???
cap is only .200 so if you do it right and your tolerances are tight your tenon is .800.
seems like alot of tenon to me. what isnt tenon is epoxy...if anything
almost 2x the tenon as a shorty ferrule
btw i wont do uncapped ivory. i want as much up there as possible

I think that was me. I was referring to his 1/2 inch ferule. If it was capped it would have a pretty short tenon. I repair a lot of Helmstetter Billiard shafts and they use a capped ferrule with a 1/4 inch threaded tenon. Really tiny.i was a hard core 1'' only capped.
