Prather Full Splice Blank - Louro Preto/Curly Maple

wow, my eyes popped out of my head looking at that first pic of the figuring. It looks like its on fire or something, insane. congrats

Cue tease.

Hmm... being from the West Coast I can think of a few that would do a great job on your cue. Looking forward to the completed pics!

LoL!

Paul is a small one man shop. He is not interested in keeping up with the 'Joneses' in the cue world. He just loves to make cues. His custom orders have gotten such that he rarely gets to make those fun cues he likes to make these days. The guy does awesome butterflies...clean as a whistle!

I only hope he had fun doing mine, and that I wasn't a huge PITA...LoL!!

Update???

Hi Lisa,
I have been following your Prather blank for a while now and was wondering where you are in the process?
After I saw yours, I looked on the Prather website and you're right....they are a little pricey for just a blank, but WOW, they look like they are worth every penny.

Can you request a wood combination from them or just what they have "in stock"?

Lastly, what you chose to do is EXACTLY what I would have done. IMO.
I'm not a cuemaker, just a lowly player that doesn't get out enough to play as much as I would like, but I know what I like when I look at cues, and yours......I LOVE!!!!

Thanks, Eric.

To the best of my knowledge, the butt is basically complete, just waiting for the joint to be added...also waiting on the shaft and then the finish.

Thank you for the compliments! My understanding is that Jeff will put together whatever he has in stock, but he will allow you to supply your own wood. I highly recommend giving Prather a call and talking with Jeff about your options. I actually did not request the wood in this blank...it was simply a matter of timing. :)

It's Done!

Okie dokie...I am so not the best photographer of cues. :sorry: And, I forgot to get the shafts out for the pic too...in a hurry I guess...haven't been able to put this one down since I received it on Wednesday night!!

This Prather blank was completed by my local maker, Paul Allers of Whidbey Island, WA....and I think he did an awesome job!

The cue plays very much like bocote, but does have a resonance like that of rosewood...terrific feedback!! Paul made two shafts up for me, one is straight grained maple and the other is an insane curly. While the curly doesn't play too badly, the straight grained shaft is very, very good!! It is my primary playing shaft, and as such, has one of Mason's 'micarta' ferrules on it and one of golfparent's Melk Dud tips. IMHO, an awesome combination for playing! Paul cut down a SS collar to make me a SS 1/2 joint which is flat faced, with my fav 3/8x11 big pin. When I picked the cue the first time, it was like I had had it all along.

Overall, I could not be more delighted with this cue! Pocket balls with it is a sheer joy. Paul was great to work with, and did everything I could have asked of him...including making it at 58" instead of his normal 60" cues length.

Aside from the crappy pic....I hope you enjoy!! :happydance:

Lisa, it has been a great read from start to finish, enjoyed every time you posted about your beautiful cue. It looks fantastic, and I look forward to hearing about how it plays for many years to come.

Thanks Tommy! You know, along with the excitement of getting a new cue, there is also always a little bit of trepidation as well. Expectations are always high and hopeful...but you just never know until you hit with it the first time if it's a player, or a 'case queen'. Let's just say that this one is definitely NOT a 'case queen'...LoL!

Someday I'll figure out how to take a decent cue pic. :sorry:

Lisa, that is one sweet looking cue. I bet it really plays great with the steel joint and big pin.

Thanks Rusty....it really does! It helps that it looks great, but the bottom line for me is the quality of play a cue has...and this one definitely does not disappoint!!!

Lisa

that's quite a *crew* there. I never saw a Helmstetter like that one and if I ever do will probably grab it :D Still ooh'n  and ahhhh'n  at the Prather Aller's combo ..... very very nice ...

Thanks Doc! Yeah, the Allers/Prather is a real neat cue. Paul's cues have a thinner butt that fit into my hand nicely. The Helmstetter has the fattest butt of the 'crew'. However, with that said, I would tell you, if you run into one of these old Helmstetter 86-06's...snag it! Silly thing knocked my socks off...LoL.

Truth be told, all three of my cues are really superior players...no disappointments in any.

Lisa,

I have followed this thread since you first posted shortly after Christmas, and have thoroughly enjoyed following progress of the cue.

The wood and veneer colors are wonderful together, and at each turn in your decision making process you improved the cue potential, ending with what you started with.... a dream cue!

Thanks for the ride along!

Will Prout

I am a sucker for blue veneers and had never seen it along with bacote. It made for a beautiful combination.

Enjoy it to the fullest..................:)

Thank you Will and Jimmy!! Y'all gonna make me blush! Coming from you both means a great deal to me.

Will, I have to agree...the journey is all part of the fun of working with a cue maker!! It's great to be able to follow the progress of one's vision.

Don't get me wrong...it's always exciting to get a new cue in the mail...whether it's new or used...but getting one you had a hand in the design concept of is just a little bit extra special. :yeah:
