The case you carry/cue you use

A good friend and I got on this discussion yesterday......we were talking about how certain places react to certain cases/cues.....ie, you walk into this room with this case and this cue, you get immediate action with $100 sets.....you walk in a week later just playing with a house cue, no action.....another week later with a different cue case and different cue, only offers for beer or $5 games.....

After a lot of discussion, we seemed to be of one mind - different places, and the players that play there, respond differently to whether or not a player has his own cue, what that cue is, what the case is, and so on......those differences determine whether or not you can get action and how much.....

In an average bar with a weekly tourney and a league night....sweet case, expensive cue - you are a hustler.....cheap case, cheap cue - you get a game quick....

An actual pool hall with limited action.....expensive cue/case, some light action.....cheap cue/case, more expensive sets......good player with a house cue, no action, you are a huslter.....

In the end, thinking about different places we played, there didn't seem to be an exact "trend" that similar places offered similar action based on similar equipment.....it was more that each different place was unique, but if you had the right combo, you could pull in some dollars.....the other day, I heard some folks behind me talking about playing some friendly action....the 3rd guy was left out, and they quietly said he should approach me for a game....and he came back with "that guy is a player, look at that case"......now, I just got a cheapy and I'm only a banger, but it does look nice and I found their logic interesting....

Anyone else experience this???

I wish I could draw a graph- it might look like a wide "X."

It sounds like you're describing a general formula, though:

The nicer the poolroom: Better your cue and case, better action. The worse your cue and case is, the worse (or nonexistent) your action seems to be. That sounds right. But I don't think you're counting cues that sport beer logos. Don't forget those because they should get better action than housecues. (this style works too: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006URVUQ/ref=cm_rdp_product)

The worse the poolroom/ BAR: The nicer the cue/ case, no action. Worse cue: better action.

If I haven't completely mucked it up already, I'd like to throw in that barplayers around here have rarely heard of a Predator, much less a custom cue. The majority of our regular barplayers will swear that a Meucci or a CueTec are the best and only in cues. They will not be impressed by a Southwest or a Schon- they may even think that's some foreign no name your uncle got at an old pawnshop.

Huh, interesting....

Funny thing is, I know what I like, but I can't spot different cuemakers either....other day buddy told me to check out that guys nice (enter cue brand here), that it was a $3k cue.....I had no idea....

Post your chart when you get it complete :D

It's a funny trend.

Used to be, when I played last time, 88-92, ANY 2x4 case was a serious knock, proclaiming you were a serious player. Anything above a soft case and a sneaky pete to break with was a knock.

but now? I love it, in our local Clicks, every hack has a Justice knock off, or at minimum an $80 2x4 and 2-3 cues, some have Nitti's running up over $2500.

You hardly get a second look for what you walk in with.

I've had it go both ways.

I normally go to play with a $600 custom leather case w/ white python , sterling silver and abalone inlays , engraveings ect that match my $4000 playing cue.

Either . . . I get really serious hardcore action or they don't want any part of it.

I have never paid much attention to what someone is shooting with before I gamble with them. I don't really see what it matters. To me it matters how they are shooting not what they are carrying or shooting with.

I still have a 8 single cue cases from when I hustled in bars. They are all different and all different colors and cheap. This way if I made a good score at a bar a few months ago I could dress different, wear my hair different (maybe a hat also) and chances were high no one would remember me. I had 3 different color SP's that I sold when the health went down the tubes. A lot of people remember cases. I also have 2 2x3's, 2 2x2's, and a 3x5. Johnnyt

now days if i dont know you you get the 8 ball playing 10 ball.

Remember the old saying? "Don't judge a book by its cover?"

I don't know anyone that can tell how good a player is by the cue and case they own.

The only time I remember a stranger had a problem getting a game was when everyone in the room was broke.

.

How true! We have league players who can't run three balls, bringing schons and such in some serious leather to APA every week.
I have a 7 on my team who just grabs something off the wall each week.

Wise advice!

:-) Good thread - I agree with the original poster's assessment. Epsecially - no stick but want to bet high - no action.

But......you forgot the newest and greatest way to get action, walk in with a cue case plastered with league patches. Pretend that you are there for league night and are shocked that you went to the wrong bar.

I always thought a great hustling case would be one that had some APA patches that said "APA 3", "APA 4" and so one and you stopped them on the case at "APA 5" and had two "Break and Run" patches and an "I (heart) APA" patch and "Travis Trotter" done in those Glitter letter stickers you get at the dollar store. Top all that off with an "I (heart) Cuetec" And a sticker pic of Allison Fisher's head with a ring of tiny hearts around it and you will have a line out the door wanting to play you.

Um..... that's because people who can't run three balls have jobs that allows them to buy toys and PLAYERS don't "work" and stay broke unless they make a score every once in a while.

Boston shorty's case,,,,,,,,,

Don't forget ''boston shorty''.he used to come in with a vinyl case with duct tape all over it to hold it together......

It housed his brunswick '' willie hoppe''.............

So when is JB Cases going to come out with this new line of "Hustler" cases? :D
