Bumperless Cues

I'm always very careful with my cues and I take extra care not to bump my cue while i'm playing. I rest my cue on the rubber bumper sometimes while holding my cue for my next turn at the table.

I've been seeing pictures of bumperless cues for sale and in the cue gallery and I'm wondering why you would want a cue without a rubber bumper? Can someone tell me what the reason is for building a cue without a rubber bumper? Is it for looks only because I can't see any playing advantage for a cue without a rubbber bumper.

What is the playing advantage of a cue with a rubber bumper?

As with just about anything on a cue, it is a matter of personal preference.

I have a hoppe titlist conversion so i dont have a bumper on my cue because i wanted the traditional hoppe look & i really like the look of a bumperless cue.

I do have to be carefull about where i set my cue down but for me it is well worth it.

Some people claim the rubber bumper acts as a dampener and without one, a cue has a more of a "crisp" hit to it.

I started a thread on this question a couple of months ago; search on "bumperless" and you'll find it. I'm with you in feeling that I'd probably always prefer a bumper, but a lot of posters provided good explanations on why some like bumperless.

None that I know of. The rubber bumper is there to protect the cue when it touches the floor.

Given todays Fern Barns and carpet joints there is little need for a bumper on a cue. It is simply one of those things that was on every Valley house cue we ever grew up with. In the days of the "Hustler" when you went "tap, tap" you could hear it on the wooden flooring with maybe a bumperless cue. Today, there is no sound. So...if I had my druthers I would play in a pool hall with wood flooring like the one in Denver CO, and a quality no-bumper, no-wrap, no frills sneaky pete and make a resounding "'tap tap" when my worthy opponent made a good shot.

You make some interesting points on bumperless cues.

I love the look myself. The nice thing is some of them have a small tapped hole in the weight bolt and you can still put a bumper on the cue.

Absolutely, the cuemakers that get the large allen head bolts from Atlas and polish it until it shines like chrome. Where I play is all hardwood flooring so a person would just have to get used to resting the cue on their shoe.

I have played with Hoppe styled cues for decades. The bumper acts as more of a muffler IMO...I personally like the "ping" a true Hoppe cue makes at contact. I know my cue can be heard across the room, jukebox blarring.

Voodoo~~~bumper, we dont need no stinkin' bumpers!!!

Love the Classic look, It is an old school look u cannot have with a bumper. I have a bumperless on order. This baby should be me soon.
