Sharp Pain, Help?

The day before last I was shooting uncontrollably bad... It really all started with this nasty sharp pain in my hand, wrist, arm... It's all in my right hand, my grip hand, non-bridge. The best way I can explain it is this:

It feels as though I am grabbing a hold of an electric fence and the pain goes from my wrist, to my hand, and onwards to my elbow. After that, my hand gets all tingly and numb, and my hand turns ice cold due to lack of circulation of blood I believe. The pain starts in my wrist though.

I can't do anything more then a medium stroke without having to shake my hand away from the pain. I really don't understand it. Tonight, it happened at least a dozen times! So I started playing my shots much softer, and I used a soft break. I don't understand on why I'm having this pain.

I want to see my doc about this, but I having a BIG feeling he is going to say to take it easy from playing pool for a couple of weeks... I doubt I could do that! If the pain consists throughout the day of playing, I'll make an appointment with the doc. I have lessons and then league in the evening. (Only day off from work, taking advantage of pool time!) One thing that worries me is that my father has rheumatoid arthritis, my doc told me I am more then likely going to have it, and the pain I get in my knee and shoulder is due to the beginning symptoms, Gosh I hope not, I just turned 21!

What might this be? Is it due to maybe not holding my cue right? Imbalance? Or am I flicking my wrist possibly? I had someone watch me tonight, a well known trainer out of my pool hall, and he told me I am using the correct wrist action, and that I'm not going all over the place I have a steady stroke.. I see-saw a slight bit though, I knew that. I've been trying to get over that for a LONG time. Could that be it? I would think that has more or less to do with my shoulder then wrist though?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
AJ

Does your hand turn dark blue when it's cold?

Does your hand turn dark blue when it's cold?

No, I don't think it is a full circulation loss, can still move my hand but there is no sensation and it looks all blotchy, red and white. The pain is consistent until I move my hand around and it starts to go away a little.

Look up raynaud's syndrome and try the suggested exercises to see if they help you?

Thanks for the input on that, but the only blue my hands are really getting is do to improper chalking methods. The color change in my hand is not that extreme either. Like I had said, just blotchy looking. The sharp pain is what really worries me :frown:

I have a medically smart family, so it rubbed off on me. haha. I'm no doctor myself, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. Like the other guy said, a doctor visit would be a good idea to put your mind at ease. I'm guessing it's nothing serious to fret over. Feel free to PM me if awkward symptoms occur...I may have some input for you.

Doctor ... Doctor .... What's Ailing me???

Sounds like a pinched nerve, and when you move your hand and arm around, you are relieving the pressure on it.

Did you sustain any blows to your hand, arm, elbow, or shoulder joint recently?

I had what is referred to as 'Saturday night palsy' one time for 5 months, after I broke up a fight in the Navy, and one of the fighters threw part of a 2 x 4, and it hit me right at the elbow joint. I lost feeling in the arm for about 5 months. They call it Saturday night palsy, because guys that drink a lot would go out on Saturday night, get blitzed, and wake up Sunday morning with a loss of feeling in their limbs for awhile. Besides the loss of feeling, their would be electric shocks throughout the arm at various times.

Remedy - Get a rubber ball and squeeze with your hand several times a day. The power hand grips to strengthen hands, wrists, and arms also works well. It will come back, but may some time.

sure sounds like carpel tunnel to me. look it up and i think thats what is happening to you. especially likely if you use your mouse alot on your computer.
time is now to correct it or they will be cutting you at some point.

could be Carpul Tunnel too, try to do some squeezing execizes with a ball. or go to the drug store they have execizing balls for your hands.

also your muscles in your hands could just be cramping from holding the cue for so long. i think the execizes will help that as well.

Could also be a pinched nerve in your neck, from your head being in an awkward position while shooting.

Do not hesitate in getting this checked out, and i hope all works out for you!

Good Luck!
Steve

go to a sports doctor

First, schedule an appointment with a sports doctor. This could be anything from very minor to very major. Not something for a backyard or internet diagnosis. Having said that, it does sound like a nerve issue. A lot of things can cause nerve issues though and as has been already mentioned the problem may be at the site of the pain or a long ways away from it.

Smarter to back off of pool until this is sorted out but if you are going to play don't break hard and I suggest changing the timing of when you hit the cue ball. Hit the ball a little later in your stroke by moving your hand a few inches further forward than normal on the cue stick. This often results in less of a jarring sensation, worth a try. Trying to roll the cue ball the bare minimum, no rail or one rail shape, may well be good for your injury and your game.

My input: don't ever solicit or accept medical advice from anonymous strangers on the internet. Go see a doctor.

Left Arm? Younger and younger people are having HEART PROBLEMS today. Diet is the REASON I THINK.

Friend is a CCU Nurse in PHX, she had a patient recently with a HEART ATTACK at 27.

That would make the most sense, but no. I haven't gotten drunk and done anything like that lately... I mean there was this one time.. jk. Nothing has been done physically straining to myself in forever.

You ask this crew for medical advice:confused::confused::confused::confused:

They can't even agree on billiard advice.

Ha Ha, that made me smile, great start to the day! I'm more or less looking for opinions, that way if my doc does say something, I would have a general idea I suppose?

time is now to correct it or they will be cutting you at some point.

I am on my computer for about 2 hours when I get home from the pool hall... This is the most mouse action I get is here on AZ, I use Skype to talk, not type.

It seems this might be a good idea though, thanks.

My thoughts, also. AJ failed to tell us other activities in which he participates.

I am not a fan of doctors (too many want to medicate for issues that don't need medication). I am, however, a fan of physical therapists. I'd look in your area for someone who specializes in rehabilitation and talk to them about it. Find someone you feel at ease with and who is willing to really assess the situation.

Pool puts us into unnatural positions, there is a chance that your stance is actually causing the pain (shoulder-down, instead of hand-up). A sports medicine student once helped me with a lumbar/hip discomfort by simply looking at how I stood and recommending exercises.

If all that fails, try acupuncture. A buddy of mine swears that it nearly cured his asthma.

I'm not a big fans of docs as well due to the medication that they throw at us without to many reasons to back me up. Personal experience on that one... Spent to much money no need to, another long story.

All I do is I work at the pool hall, before that I was an administrators assistant for over a year. I've been playing pool non-stop since I first picked up a cue back in Sept. 07. Atleast 30 hours on a pool table a week.

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to play today. I will ask around for a good doc to be referred to about this. I am going to end up playing soft and easy. Last night I was playing a game I couldn't exactly walk away from (money involved... a lot...) so I played my heart out but I did what you had said and it is great advice, made my shots simple... One rail at most with my shots. It did help I saw things I didn't see before in the simplicity of pool. I won, and stopped playing thank goodness!

Thanks
