I watched the second half of that match (I'm sitting there with Bunny) and Lee Van just took over and beat Shane something like 25-13. It was a big bet, maybe 200,000p. And Shane lost to Warren right after on the same table. Also for some serious cheese.

By the way, Lee Van is FIRST Tier in the PI, the highest ranking. He ocasionally comes to the USA, and I think he won a big tourney at Turning Stone last year.

Shane did much better last year, prior to the WPC in November. I was in with him when he won several matches for bets ranging from 20,000p to 100,000p (against De Luna at Bugsy's Lair). That's when they realized he was first tier speed as well. His range of opponents narrowed to about seven or eight guys. If Shane's Ten Ball break is working, he can beat anyone, anywhere at any time. He hasn't reached his peak as a pool player yet. He will win many more major titles before he's through.

One reason Shane is so popular here, is that Shane is not only a tournament champion, he will step up and bet high too. Johnny was like that when he first came to the PI in the early 90's. I've been told that Johnny and Rodney both have winning records gambling over here, the only two Americans who have been able to do this. And they were playing the top players then too.

Finally I got a chance to see the whole match.

Shane really has a monster-break in 10-ball, and it is a joy to watch him play when the table is open. But when there are clusters you can see how he really got outmoved and outplayed by Lee Van Corteza.

Well done by Lee Van Corteza.

Funny thing is that Efren Reyes is still beating Lee Van Corteza in moneymatches in the Philippines :) Last time I was there I had sidebet on Efren against Lee Van, and Efren won. 10 000 pesos for me :D

I also watched the match recently added by BClub. Niels Feijen - Lee Van Corteza from last years US Open.

Lee Van is playing solid, and he seems so relaxed when playing. I think he got his nerves removed at a young age :D

Roy, how much did you give Efren for his hard work?

The going rate the last time I was there in '05 was 20% of your winnings. That's what Jeff Deluna told me anyway. I side bet AGAINST Efren with Jherome Pena and won. I gave Jharome more than 20%. I can still see him smiling with that missing tooth of his. He was suprised to get so much extra cheese.

I just wanted to have fun and hey, he did all of the hard work anyway. BTW Efren gave him the 7, if not I would have never bet against him. I also made money with Roland Garcia (Gabuto) when he played Jeffery.

Those were some fun times at Bugsy's!

So, does the fact that the ref. is marking any balls that could potentially move due to the shooter's bridge or body mean that they generally play fouls on all balls, or is that just so they will know the precise location of the ball in case they need to replace it? Thanks.

They will put the "moved" ball back into its original position after all balls that the current shooter has put in motion
has stop moving, but here's the catch; if a ball or the CB bumps into the "moved" ball, it's a foul to the shooter...

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification.

Good rolls,

Aaron

I can watch Shane's break over and over again. The movement he gets on ALL 10 balls is amazing.

What happened to the videos? I liked watching this match. I learned something from it each time I watched.

I hate to bump an old thread again but does anyone have this match? :o

For the sake of God, please share if you have it. :o

Lee Van Corteza

Leevan is strong, its amazing how much talent there is in the pillipines ,like ive never heard of corteza and hes good enough to match up to SVB and beat him...crazy.

Yes, Van van is that strong.. As we can all see, this past three weeks was all Corteza's. The kid has matured to be a serious pool player. We used to wonder why he always did good whenever we put him up to a money match and struggle on tournament plays. But this time, I believe he is now able to focus on tournament plays like he does on money matches.

It could be that he finally evolved into a consummate world class player...

That's hilarious.

You're quite right, it sounds hilarious.. But really, most of the tables in the Philippines pool halls, except of course the better ones, the tables are not up to par to American standards. You have to read and adjust to the playing conditions.

As to the constant excuse of being sharked when they miss, I say bull! The only person to blame is yourself, nobody else. Do not let outside actions or motions to distract you when you are playing. To give you an example of distractions or "sharking" for all of you whiners out there: Where I grew up and learred how to play, lot of times you have to push rail birds from the table to shoot. Sometimes you are stroking for the case ball and somebody will come up to the table and puts money down on the table trying to get a bet out of you, saying that you can't make the shot.

Well, if you're confident that you can make the shot, take the bet and drill the hole. For most Filipino players, sharking is a state of mind. If you can't stand anybody moving or talking while you are playing or stroking, I say play inside a church!

but the awesome thing about the PI is that they play. No BS. They step up. I liked that. Its tough to win, Shane lost A LOT there. If they played in the States, Shane probably has the better end of most of the games, but in PI, the conditions are so different. Not an easy task to get used to them... like i said though, lots of fun. Totally different atmosphere in comparison to States...

Shane told me recently that overall he is ahead a few $$'s there but its tought action and he loves it.

 I would love to see Corteza match up against SVB next similar to the SVB vs Orcullo format in TAR. Make it happen, Justin.
