I was going to say pretty much self taught, but I've learned a lot from a lot of different people over the years, so I'm not sure that's true.
I've had formal lessons from Ray Martin and Jim Rempe. The Martin lesson was good for the time, late '70s, hiding the cue ball in one-foul-ball-in-hand-anywhere 9 ball. I was offered that or the moves in One Pocket. All things considered, I was I had taken the One Pocket.
Rempe was kind of a general thing, mostly on gripping the butt. Rempe was influenced in what to offer me by someone else and wasn't really what I wanted.
Informal lesson from Gary Pinkowski, which became the basis of whatever kind of halfassed 9 ball player I have become. Better than Martin and Rempe.
Informal and over the phone from Hal Houle on CTE, which is definitely the best thing I have learned in years.
I wouldn't mind some more formal instruction at this time but I just can't afford it right now. I'm putting my game back together after several years of not really applying myself.
I should say that when I was learning to play, a great many people in the room I played in were very helpful, to a point, and I'm grateful to all of them.

I can not overstate the positive experience(s) I have had getting private, professional instruction. Worth way more than I paid!

I had lessons from several instructors over the years.
Randy's Pool School followed up by a private lesson from Scott Lee about a year later was the most productive instructions I ever had.

Same thing here, both very inspirational. You have to be willing to put in the time on the table after the lesson though, or it's no better than a pep talk.

Lessons

I am mostly self taught but I did take lessons from LeRoy Kinman, which turned out to be a great friendship. LeRoy did teach me Defense, which can win you matches even if you are not as strong a shooter as your opponent.
Remember this. You are never too old to learn something. So in my mind, if I can play a stronger player, read a book or watch a tape and learn one thing. Then it is worth while.

I have been very fortunate!!!

Never really had a formal lesson. But have learned from many top notch players in my area, just by watching them over the years.
Mike Z., JD, Dan L., Clark (first teacher), and having a front row seat to Mr. Glenn Atwell. We have played scotch together off and on since 2003.

I have been very lucky to be around some very talented players.:)

Yes! Chris Lynch, Earl Strickland and Ginky in that order. All for 1 lesson.

Informally...Accu-Stats!!

<<<<<Self taught, but I will definitely take a lesson or two sometime in the future.

I just had another lesson with Dan Louie. I've been focusing on learning what the best route or pattern to take with him. I'm ranked as high as anyone in my league but his patterns in 8 ball and shot selection in 9 ball that he suggests are so much better than my ideas it's very humbling.

I am learning so much by taking lessons this way. Anyone who gambles will easily make their money back if they take lessons imo.

I'll stick to taking lessons from former world champions. So far I've taken lessons with Archer, Strickland, Varner and Louie and my game has improved faster than any of my peers. I do need some lessons on strategy when I'm spotted balls though. You would probably know more about that.

No Lessons for Me

I got better by getting my a$$ beat and paying while watching every move of one of the best 14-1 players in south east Pa 20 yrs ago. Those cheap $10.00 & $ 20.00 games were very valuable to me.
