Dieckman On College Billiards

Just read a thing on the carom forum on College Billiards of San Diego that made me post this.

Spent all of December 2008 there [thank you to TIMO and PEDRO, our gracious hosts] with Jaminson Neu as my caddy and could not have found a better place to play any game I wanted. 3-Cushion, 4.5 x 9 Pockets, Snooker, you name it, it was there for the asking. TOTALLY MULTI-ETHNIC, people from all over the world were there playing and having fun. Maybe a little action, but that is not the focus of this room. COME TO COLLEGE AND HAVE FUN AND LEARN. I mean they even let Jamison do MASSE shots and did not even charge him when he tore the green felt.

SO WHAT ANYBODY ELSE HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS PLACE, Dieckman would tell you go there, even if you have to drive 2000 miles to get there like he did. Don't matter who you are or what you are, YOU WILL BE WELCOME THERE AND HAVE A GREAT TIME, be amongst friends on the green felt.

If you are 100 miles north go to HARD TIMES in Bellflower....forget about HOLLYWOOD and PLUSH POCKETS.

Pedro's got the place real nice now... Not the best neighborhood but college has been there a long time....

Back when Mark Griffin owned the place and Victor Castro ran it, some of the regulars there were some top notch players. Sam Manoale, Victor himself, Chip Klein, Louis Ulrich, Dan Wallace to name a few. You still get some good players hanging out there, and it's great, just a different atmosphere than it used to be.

I used to play there five or six days a week six-8 hours a day. Then I got transfered to another duty station when I was still in the Navy.

I'm living a little too far north to go there regularly now, but I try to go in on occasion still and if any of you AZers are ever in town and want to hit some around, let me know and I'll come down.

college is a good place to hang out. last time i was there the equipment was great and the set up really can't get any better. places for people to play and a raised area for people to watch matches being played.

the burgers are pretty good too!
 
Swanee's "home"

College was Swanee's home room when he was not on the road

Like most old rooms it has seen it's good times & bad times.

Pedro has it looking good again, the tables look great and, as PP2093 said, it is set up very well for the players and the spectators (that has not changed over the years)
 
College Billiards

I really enjoyed owning that room (College Billiards) for the few years I did. I had it 7 years or so - sold in 2004.

There was real pool of talent in that room. And as Fran said, it was Jay's home room.

The first couple of years of the Swanee were held there. The Swanee is going towards the 14th annual (Feb 13-14, 2010).

The room opened in 1963. One of the oldest rooms around.

We had all of the old GCI rebuilt by Bob Bebb back around 1999-2000. He did a great job and we had some nice matches.

Just remembering all of the good times and people.

Hey Mark,

If it weren't for you having owned the room at the time of Jay's passing I believe that the Swanee Memorial Tournament would have never gotten started.

Never hurts to give you Kudos again for that (and all that you do) :thumbup:

The tournament became too large for College Billiards. Mark had also moved to Nevada but was kind enough to find another venue that was large enough and kept up the tradition.

Hollywood Billiards is very nice and we have a great time up there at the Swanee every year now.

You should come down for it.

Hey Dennis. This is Dave Gross. I visited that room about 2 months ago and played 3C for the 1st time in years with a friend from Edgie's in Milpitas, the equipment was 1st class. Prior to that I have been to that room in the early-mid 90's and again iin 2000. It always had a little something going on.
