Best Machine Ever. :-)

Cuemakers,

If someone in China built a machine that would cut perfect points every time - meaning that your points on your cues would all come out sharp and perfect every time no matter the amount of veneers - would you want one?

Would you buy one if you had the opportunity and the money to do so?

I ask this as a follow up to the whole idea that some cue makers "sold out America" by teaching the Chinese what they know.

So my question is basically if the Chinese cue maker invented some killer technique or machine that truly advanced cuemaking would you want to acquire that knowledge or machine?

We need to open our eyes and ears......

I bet ur not gonna get a whole lotta positive feedback to this question. But since I am the first to respond, I will try and set a different tone to what I expect would be a bunch of negative responses.

I myself support America, and there is a true love for my country. I would like to see many things change about the way we do things, especially the lazy, spoiled, mentality many people have. The reason you like asking that question, is because economically, the Chinese are advancing exponentially everyday. Probably more so than we here in America. China will soon be if not already the most powerful country in the world with their initiative of advancement and desire to be #1. The most basic fundamentals are lost here in America because we are too spoiled in general. We have lost the #1 position in the world because our leaders are way too corrupted and that filters down on 'We the People'. We should all take a step back and reflect on our diet, exercise regimen, and most importantly, our attitude. Our attitude towards one another, our country, our past, and especially our future.

Anything that demonstrates support for another country would depend on if it was good for the rest of the world, especially America. That, to me, is the real issue at hand. No matter what, secrets of any craft or method can and will be acquired. History has proven it. If there is a way to produce something, the Chinese will damn sure get that info and then, take it to the next level. This is an 'underdog' mentality that we here in America could use. We should take on a more humble attitude on a worldly perspective and seek to improve, grow, and mature more so on a daily basis.

In martial arts, we learn that when you're a white belt, you learn how to bow. You also learn from a 'beginner's mind'. What is important is that even when you become a black belt, an instructor, or even a master, you must still bow your head and keep a beginner's mind.

I appreciate you trying to bring your perspective to this and people should pay attention with an open mind, because you, sir, are apparently right in the middle of it. It's easy to be offended by your comments, but if we look past what you are saying and think things through, we here in America could do much more as individuals to benefit humanity instead of just benefitting ourselves.

Actually the question was just about whether knowledge has a "country" or not? I personally do not think that the Chinese have taken everything they get in to the next level.

I will give you laser engravers as an example. As far as I know there is no Chinese seller of aluminum tube lasers. All of the Chinese laser producers who produce small format CO2 lasers are using glass tubes and primitive software. The technology they use is 15 years behind America's.

Our Universal Laser that we use in Sterling Gaming every day to personalize cues and other stuff as well as do tons of other things cost us nearly $30,000 and was worth every penny. Conversely the $5000 laser I use here is one that I want to smash into little bits about once a week.

Universal does real good business in China according to the Universal rep here. All the businesses that depend on very precise cutting and marking and machines with no downtime use lasers imported from the USA and Europe.

But, what if the Chinese did invent a "better" laser than any found in the USA? Wouldn't it make sense for USA businesses to buy that machine instead of the inferior one in the USA?

I already have 2 machines that can do it... First the breeze which is a taig based machine which we modify for cuemaking. Also the storm which is a ground up machine built in house . Also a program written by my friend mc2 on here and a recut fixture we sell. Between the program and the machines i can cut prefect points all day long. I cant see why we would want more things from china, the import cues have killed the cue market in my opion. I have also met recently with 7 of the top wood sources for shaft wood being exported overseas most of which comes from the michigan based and surounding areas. They are tried of dealing with these poeple and basicly giving wood away to them, i can assure everyone this will not happen for long i can't wait to see what happens when there wood sources dry up . We as amercians need to protect our resources and stop giving them away to overseas markets to re sell to us and hurt our econmy. We as americans do have the sharpest knifes in the draw when it comes to manufacturing!! Always at the trade shows i have many foreiners taking pictures and asking questions why? We all know why, to steal our products!!! And make them cheaper i myself run these poeple off from my booth as fast i as can and i am not afraid to do so or talk about it!it only hurts us as americans
i do believe most poeple when it comes to quality products will buy american first. I also have know respect for any cue makers or any other billiards poeple that have gone overseas and set up factorys, sorry john if that offends you, i will say you make a nice product not taking that away from you and at least you stay there and make your cases you just didnt hit and run. Lets take a cue maker that goes over seas and sets up a factory we will stay nameless but we all know who this is at one time there was just a handful of cuemakers none of them ever gave out any secerts why??
Ill tell you why its not as hard as they want to make it look!!! Now when that certin person realizes that there are many fine cuemakers here... Many of which could give him the 7 ball he sells out the the overseas market but you know the funny thing all the overseas poeple want to buy usa cues this must tell you something when it comes to custom cues.!!!!and other fine products

John shouldnt the question be "if the Chinese cue maker re-invented"~~~

Veneers dont effect the overall point length only the intermediate length.

Ok Lee. I get that you invent a lot of things and I have bought a number of things from you over the years that have all worked great.

The question was more generic than specific - I just picked points as one example. But let's say that the Chinese (or insert country here) bought your machines, combined them all into one and made it much better - would you still expect people to buy your solution when a better one existed?

And IF the solution were clearly better, to the point where even you had no doubt it was better would you want to build something similar or even better still?

I don't really appreciate the personal attacks though. I understand that you have no respect for what you consider to be selling out but do you refuse to sell to people from outside the USA? If someone goes to your booth at a show do they have to show you their passport and sign a contract stating that they will not use your equipment or knowledge you impart on your videos to make cues outside the USA?

I mean you sell videos on how to make and repair cues http://www.briannaproducts.com/learn.htm so do you consider yourself to be a sellout if some "foreigner" buys your videos?

FIRST OFF I AM NOT TRYING 4TO PUT YOU DOWN AS I SAID YOU MAKE A GREAT CASE AND AS I SAID YOU ARE STAYING THERE DOING IT YOURSELF

Hi,

To cut points all you need is a mill and an angled fixture to hold your piece. China already makes this equipment. Brianna and others have developed CNC equipment that will do this job without moving the fixture by hand or a power feed. Why can China do any better?

The cue making market is not big enough for China to pay attention. Guys like Lee, Chris, Brian, & Joe who have made intructional videos and supply nitch market items to Cue Makers should be applauded for their effort and ingenuity.

For a Cue Maker to be successful he has to overcome many barriers to design, build and market his product. Acquiring knowledge is one thing. Applying that knowledge into production is another thing.

Every cue maker must develop his own shop and process control system procedures for making a repeatable product to his own standards. Only the end user will be the judge of that product and their appreciation of that product standard will dictate the price, demand and status of the cue maker's brand.

As has been pointed out to others before you this section is called "Ask the Cuemaker" This is not called "Bait and Switch". This is not called "Ask a question then argue with a cuemakers response." This is not called "Ask the cuemaker then bully him for not agreeing with your view". If you wish a debate about global economics or the transfer of technology from one country to another and the impact on their respective populations please feel free to use the Main Forum. For those of you who would rather not be baited by the question - don't answer - as this is the only way to keep the questioner from doing just that.

I thought you got in trouble for having multiple screen names? Hmmmm......

Joe

Actually Joe the JB Cases screen name was created for the business and was intended to be just for JB Cases to communicate with people and show off customer cases.

The John Barton screen name was there before and is my personal account.

My wife is handling the JB Cases screen name now, I don't even have the password or access and it will only be used for business communication.

Hope this clears things up for you.

John
