BREAKING NEWS: IPT Announces 150 Players

I sure hope so

I must say: I AM EXCITED!

One thing for sure, the IPT Tour does have an international flavor. The first OPEN event will begin in the year 2006, which is depicted on the IPT website.

There is an invitational event happening November 30-December 4, 2005 which will have 43 IPT members, 10 of which are CONFIRMED Hall of Famers.

The total prize purse for EACH upcoming tournament is: $1 MILLION

First place will pay out $200,000.

Wow, it doesn't get any better than this! :D :D :D

JAM
I hate to be "Negative Nathan" here but where will the million dollar prize fund be generated from?

I would be interested

in finding how the IPT is affecting all the other tours,
and mid to major tournament promotors? Is it too much
to hope for the IPT to cause a chain reaction elsewhere
in the land of Pool? It would be nice if things were more
defined for the 'semi-pro' level of competition also.

$29,850 from the 150 players $199 entry fees and $970,150 out of Kevin's front or back pocket.

I had breakfast one morning with Vincent Goh at the U.S. Open. He was a charming gentleman, and I enjoyed our chat, learning a great deal about Singapore. The flight from Singapore to the U.S. Open in Virginia took him 23 hours. I remember saying to him that he spoke English so good with no accent, to which he quickly replied that English is the native language in Singapore. :p

One thing about this pool life, it is a very educational experience, and I have been fortunate enough to meet some of the NICEST pool folk from around the world, to include Vincent Goh. Congratulations to him! :)

JAM

Wow, a singaporean with no accent. Unbelievable lah. :D

From the IPT website.

QUESTION:
I heard that at some of these tournaments you will be doing a lot of filming and turning it into a reality TV show. Is this true?

ANSWER:
As of right now, it is our intention to do a massive amount of filming at IPT tournaments. The filming will not just be the matches, but will actually follow players around in a reality TV format. Yes, it is our intention to produce a series of reality TV shows. Whether or not these shows are picked up by any TV network is yet to be seen.

Mmmmmmmmmmm.........

Gabber

Just my $.02

I actually like the way everything is set up in the IPT.

-All events will be 8-Ball
-4 1/2 pockets
-Slow nap cloths
-No breaking from the side rails
-Winners break
-No shot clocks
-No jump cues
-All tournaments will be round-robin with the exception of the final match
-All final matches will be a race to 9 with the best 2 out of 3 sets winning the match

All the reasoning is sound. The only drawback (I like that word) I can see is only one discipline is being performed. The Derby City Classic has more than one discipline, but when you talk about the money being offered who cares that only 8-ball is being offered!

Remember when Golf and NASCAR didn't pay much? Now they do. I wondered (most of you probably did too) why not pool? This is the big step we have all been waiting for for our beloved game. We are holding our breath that the bottom won't fall out. If the IPT makes it thru the infancy stages it certainly will begin the climb up as the newest member as No Limit Holdum Poker did before.

To assist in that climb will be how it is showcased. Filming pool like a reality TV show is the only way the general public will take it. We have tried everything else. 7-ball and 9-ball are TV friendly because of short attention spans, but it has no "Hook." Showcasing all walks of life, the good, the bad, and the ugly to a common goal of $200,000. More people have played our game than any other in the world. You don't have to be strong, fast, or using steriods to play this game.

It is the most physically and mentally demanding game in the world. Golf comes a close second, but then again how many people in everyday life can afford the green fees at country clubs (compared to table time or even a bar box?)

This is pools chance for a big splash. Let us pray that it will be bigger than we ever Imagined.

RE: To Ted

Hello Ted, I sent in an application and am not on the list of even the 150 so there is your answer. I filled it out and listed my accomplishments, I guess Mike Sigel does'nt want to give me a rematch after winning on TV against me back in 95. I may have irritated some people on the board of the directors but I wish I could personally thank anyone who has tried to hold me back because I have come to realize that everything happens for a reason. There is a reason why there is no org. in pool, which leads to there being a reason why some of the best players in the world are not accounted for on this IPT.
This tour may or may not last but I hope that it is not another Don Mackey deal, this will set pool back even further.
Sincerely, Danny Harriman

Didn't they get like 3000 responces, someone had to be left off the list so I would not take it personal. Although there are a few on there who don't belong that just don't play that good. Who knows why they picked who they did.

nine pages is alot of reading!

Anyway, the list of players looks great from a marketing perspective but certainly isn't the top 150 players out of all that applied. It would be nice to see more international players selected considering over half of the 150 selected were American. Anyways it was nice to see some AZ'ers make it like Colin and Keith, but there are others on the board that could also make a case for being selected considering some of the players that did somehow manage to make the cut.

I would crawl 5 miles through broken glass to see the list of applicants!

Danny,
Remember the story you told me & Andy in between Reno and San Francisco about the match you played right after you played Sigel in that tournament, playing a houseman in New Jersey. Do you remember what he said to you after he said he don't like hustlers and you said you came to beat him, and you were gonna keep beatin' him as long as he played? "You've got balls this big, kid!" :D
That is one of the greatest stories I have to this very day! It must have been absolutely thrilling!!! You have certainly overcome a lot of odds in your life, so I know that when the qualifier for next year rolls around, you'll be right there in the top 50 for your spot on this tour...and I know you will make them remember your name in 2007. Good luck, kid!

I would have tried applying if I knew that Linda Carter could make it! Good luck to all that got in, and boy I hope this gets us closer to where we need pool to be!!!

Not as excited as I am!!!

Many players hope to get in but didn't. Many who are living the dream to be somewhere in pool have to wait. This would have been the break some needed. But unfortunatly many good semi pro players missed out but for the one who made it good luck

Good Luck Linda! Hey what are you doing posting? get practicing
:D

Thanks for the good luck wishes. For all those interested on how I got in, I actually applied for my husband, Mike Zimmerman. We were going to put him in for the $899. For anyone not knowing who he is, you will. He has beaten everyone on the west coast - from Canada to S. CA except 1 person. Two weeks ago, he beat Horsfall and Stan T. to win an 8 ball tournament with over $1000 added. Mike Vidas was in the tourney too. He beat Kim Davenport when he was world champion. This tour is for people like him that has struggled - gambling, going on the road, playing for 30 years with no significant payouts.

As a result of something one of my friends told Mike Sigel, that apparently got back to Kevin, and the fees were lowered. So we in the NW knew right away that it was only $1. I was told to enter, because they didn't have enough women applying, since the WPBA was preventing their women from entering at that point. (I'm not sure if they only let the top women out of their contracts or what). The idea of having IPT sanction the WPBA is funny, it ought to be the other way around!

Anyway, I digress. I did enter, all the while pitching for my husband. To those that only have seen me play on the WPBA, let me remind all that I did it while holding a high level FT career (I am an Area Sales Manager for a medical company and work 50-70 hrs/week), with 2 children, raising them as a single parent. I also was the founder of the ACW, the 1st NW regional WPBA tour and put on monthly tournaments, wrote the articles, standings, got the room owners, sponsors, etc.. And I was the house pro for Jillian's, so I would need to do corporate parties/exhibitions/lessons. I think they admired the fact that even though I did not get many hours in at the table, I was still able to compete at somewhat of a high level. I think I was the only one of the top 64 women who were juggling that much. There were only 14 mothers on the WPBA at the time I played and only 4 or 5 had a 'job' with kids and most of those jobs were in poolrooms, and they all had husbands to care for their kids when they wanted to practice and/or support them. I have never NOT worked and have been the sole supporter of my kids since 1990. My kids are finally out of the house since just last month and I have gone back to night school 2x/week to get my Master's degree in Health Care Administration. I play 1-2 nights a week in weekly tournaments with my husband and then show up at a weekend tournament. I am usually not warmed up and in stroke until the tournament is over!! lol

Have you looked at what the top pros have made? I make well over 6 figures working, so there was hardly any incentive to work on my game when winning a WPBA pro stop would only win $6000. I do agree that the women are going to have a really hard time staying in the top 100. But don't sit back and judge too harshly. I realize I probably won't be there next year, so I am just having fun, enjoying the ride, while making history. I think they wanted 15 women to have 1 go into each group of 10 players to do round robins.

Just in our area, John Horsfall, Glenn Atwell, Dan Louie, Barry Emerson (originally from here) and Rich Geiler were excluded and I feel so badly for them. I wish it were open to all who had the desire to play in it. Have all 4000 show up and start weeding from there.

Just so you know, I am not helpless with a stick. I do have a few creds. I have won many tournaments, both men's and women's. Last weekend, I got 9th in the Pecheuer stop and was the only woman. I was 2nd in VNEA Nationals (should have won!), and have won a bunch of qualifiers for the WPBA, and 2 were in CA on each of their tours. I broke and ran 6 consecutive racks of 8-ball (on an 8 footer) and have been playing 30+ years. I think he wanted an 8-ball background. Viking and Talisman have supported me by providing my playing equipment. If you're interested, my bio is on Talisman's website. I qualified to play on the WPBA tour, but left when my sponsor decided to go into NASCAR instead. I have been on tv for playing pool several times and had my picture in BD. So I suppose I am marketable. I also beat Loree Jon in a pro tourney and asked where my $150,000 was (I think they liked my humor) and was 7-7 with Sarah Ellerby and running out when I miscued on the 7 and then it was over, I never shot again. In my application, I was humble and thanked KT for starting the tour and OFFERED TO HELP in any way I can. I wonder how many others did that?

I have always felt that in any other sport, people like my husband would be millionaires, and I have nothing to say about Kevin except kudos and plaudits for taking the risk and making it happen. Over the years, I have been involved in plans to make something huge and exciting happen for the world of pool and give back something to the sport that I have had some fair to middling success in. But Kevin did it first and he did it better.

So yes, there are probably 2,000 players better than I am. But I did apply and feel that I can add something to this inaugural tour. Like I said in my application, I don't look too bad for an old broad, I am respected for my skills here in the NW, and I can be dangerous. I can kick good for a 'girl' - 3 railers are my specialty. In fact, I showed Bill Cress my system. So I think it was the whole package that got me in. That and they didn't have any other women at the time to pick from. lol

Anyhoo, gotta get rolling and visit one of my hospitals in my territory (AK, W. WA, OR, MT). I wish I could be hitting 'em!

Linda "Wonder Woman" Carter

Oh yeah, I also had a built-in nickname!

I'm not really sure I know who you are, but I will let him know that you will be coming into Harvey's? The new Breaking Point is opening so I expect Todd is hanging out there, or Dr. Cue's. There's also a new room opening in Bellevue with 44 tables in 21,000 sf.

Here's the blurb in the paper:

Olson plans to target female customers by offering smaller (?) tables with hooks for purses and jackets, warm lighting and a no-smoking policy. The upscale business will include 44 tables and employ 30 to 40 workers.

Other features are a pro shop, pagers to summon servers to tables, billiard leagues, appetizers and full-service bar.

Ask him if he remember's the kid who used to give him a lift to Harry P. Cues a couple times a week when his caddy wasn't runnin' back in the late 80's. Any idea when the breaking point will actually be open? Hope your both doing well.
