Well with the allegations going on of cheating at the UPL tournament once again pool players have shown why there in no money in the sport. Between this, Earl Strickland on T.V. saying if the ref don't see it is not a foul, the IPT bank the 8 ball and get a $ 500 bonus and guys setting each other up for banks the pool players have shown us why no major sponsors will ever line up to sponsor pool. Golf is a gentleman game and they call fouls on themselves( Greg Norman was once sitting in his hotel room after leading the 3rd round of a tournament when he realized he had played an experimental ball that was not yet cleared for PGA play. He could of easily switched balls for the 4th round and nobody would of known a thing instead he disqualified himself out of the tournament).. Now this is where someone writes in and says yeah but look at what golfers make it is easy for them to DQ themselves. Golf wasn't always a rewarding sport but throughout history golf has been a gentlemans game and because of that sponsors were drawn to that and because of that the golfers are reaping the rewards. It is particulary bad when the big names of pool are involved in some of the shenanigans. Can anybody picture Phil Mickelson saying the ref didnt see it it is not a foul.

yes no one would ever doing anything like bet on golf. and i'm sure that no golfer has ever cheated either. come on man, there are plenty of honest players who call fouls on themselves. in the golf world for i'm sure for every greg norman there is another player who would have had no trouble keeping their mouth shut about an "experimental ball". the reason there is no money in pool is quite simply its a horrible sport to spectate, even for pple who love it. thats it right there. no audience=no potential consumers=no sponsors=no money. there thats the secret formula. find a way to make pool enjoyable to spectate to a wide demographic and there will be money.

and golf is fun to watch???.....:sorry:......

I know what it was....

Greg Norman was just wanting to go to play some pool instead of golf so used the old experimental ball excuse to DQ himself so he could run to the nearest pool hall and play some one hole....

I disagree that pool is boring to watch. I love going to pro events and watching them play. I do agree that the problem is in the sponsoship though. No sponsors equals no money.
Sponsors for golf and tennis are some very heavy hitters (Nike and the like). They are multimillion if not billion dollar corporations. Couple that with TV revenue and you have some major bucks being thrown at them.
To a large degree pool has the stigma of smokey bar rooms, hustlers, and dishonest play. Until this persona is vanquished, nothing will change I fear.

I'm sure more people in the world find golf fun to watch then pool so I would throw that out.

check your ratings man. maybe you dont find golf fun to watch but way more pple do than like watching pool on TV, which is why in large part there is more money in pro golf than pool.

my friend i love going to tourneys and watching the pros play. almost all my vacations revolve around get to watch a tourney. i am a pool fan. that being said there are times when even i (who loves the game) finds it a little boring to watch. esp if its a match being taped for tv. for pple in general pool is boring to watch. until arenas can be packed with rabid fans and tv ratings soar thru the roof there will be no money in pool. it really doesnt have anything to do with pool's "stygma". its just not a very good spectator sport. it has a low entertainment value to pple in general. until this changes there will be no serious money in pro pool.

Poker WAS the same way, now look at how well the game is doing! Money, TV, internet gaming, casino's poker rooms and sponsorship for many players..

Add drama and you got people watching. To make a comparison you can talk about the WSOP which is by far the most boring thing in the world to watch without added drama.

If they didn't add drama you would see a group of guys playing cards and nothing else. The cameras on the hole cards add drama and the players themselves add drama.

This is why I keep calling for a poker format for pool. Have the players buy in to a tourney. They can bet on each game, or each and every shot. Add dialogue and drama and you have a winner for television. Of course you could keep it the way it is and I will still watch. I absolutely love this game more than any sport out there. If I had the money to put it up I would've been putting it in the works long before I saw it in magazines and shortly before I posted it here (dunno if it's a coincidence and I don't care).

I believe in the format in my head enough that I would be willing to pay out 100% plus added money because I think it would be a winner year over year.

do you know what the number #1 sport in the world is as far as merchandise sold and endorser money? Nascar.. that is a real exciting sport buddy.. 50 guys driving around in a circle.

I love these people that condone this stuff by saying well there is no money in pool so what do you expect them to do. I guess we should let all the armed robbers out of prison because they were just needing money also. Or maybe its their favorite player who is one of the cheaters so lets make excuses or justify their actions somehow. Its that moronic thinking why no sponsor would want anything to do with pool. Than you got the people on here glorifying Chohan likes he is a hero.. hes a drug dealer.. are you people serious.. but because he had a beer with you one time at a pool tournament what he did is alright.. unbelievable

YOU dont find nascar exciting, but millions do. look have you ever seen 20,000 pple crammed into an stadium to watch pool? until pool is marketed in a way that makes consumers connect with it and find it interesting than there wont be that kind of money. again this has nothing to do pools "stigma"

not sure about this post. no one here denied that this stuff happens in pool or condoned it. you point is that it prevents pool from attaining the same level of profitibility as other sports and compared it to golf. what about other hugely successful sports-baseball=steroids (cheating), NBA=refs betting on games/fixing games, NFL=players arrested from betting/running dog fighting, vehicular homicide while DUI? yet all these sports do fine. pools problem is not its stigma-it just doesnt entertain pple. pool used to enjoy corporate sponship from beer and tobacco companies (deep advertsing pockets there). not any more. pool too dirty for those guys? nope not enough ROE.

and just to be clear, there is some money in pool. i believe mika scored about $100,000 btwn the qatar open, us open, and challenge of champions wins. not bad for a less that 6 month span. its way more than i make. but of course not as many are able to make a living at pro pool as other sports. however pools "stygma" hasnt prevented there being some money for those skilled enough to take it.

NASCAR is one of those words that are all capital letters. It stands for North American Stock Car Auto Racing. It has 43 racers race for 43 races per year. It grew out of Moonshiners and the cars used to deliver that product to its market. If NASCAR can go big time, so can pool.

To the concept that poker just became a watchable event and thus ganered millions of viewers and pool has not, I suggest that if pool had a way to go "all in" and if you make that one shot, you win big* and if you miss, you pack up and go home right then, pool would be a lot more exciting -- too. {* where big is less than a match and more than a game--and the opponent has to agree to allow the shooter to go all in}

I happen to think that pool is fascinating to watch (but then so is golf).

golf is about the sickest thing I have ever seen

Golf is about the sickest thing I have ever seen. The primary object seems to be beating a poor little white ball with a club because it won't go where you want it to. While attacking this little white ball golfers uproot grass, damage trees, kill poor innocent birds and fish, and bing spectators without mercy. Heck, they have been known to complain they got a bad roll off of a spectator! The glass damage from people playing golf probably runs in the millions and politicians being hackers there have been laws passed protecting golfers who break windows so this accidental or deliberate vandalism goes unpunished. Finally, the air pollution from golf is terrible. There is a huge blue fog over the golf course every weekend as the duffers hack away at everything around them and foul the air with profanity.

I have never watched a full golf program on TV in my life. However, I have watched the final few holes of an event many times when the finish was very close. Who will rise to the occasion and make the perfect shot under the pressure of hundreds of thousands on the line and the lifetime prestige of winning a major? Who will crack and blow the routine shot?

Money and pressure automatically create drama. If we had money we would have drama and audience appeal. If we had audience appeal we would have money. We seem to be going around in a lot more circles than the folks in NASCAR!
