Called, left email. A taper shaper I purchased from an AZ'er was damaged during shipping(shocker) by UPS and I need to get some sort of estimate on repair.

Why should they respond?

This post won't help in any way.

My question would be, why should they help. At what point are the builders of equipment no longer responsable for their products. They may not sell parts for their equipment unless you purchased the machine directly from them. If this is the case then this machine may not be repairable and you will have to get quote for a new machine.

I remember getting a pad printer on e-bay and when I went to get parts for it, the maker wouldn't sell me anything because they sold a franchise. They stated that the equipment was part of that package. If you didn't own the franchise you couldn't order even the ink from them. I didn't tell them at the time but it was a good way for them to do buisness as it ruled out the secondary market.

I do know however that Chris Hightower does sell to the secondary market and supports the re-sales of his machines. He of course does not need to do so but does.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

Jim.

Having ordered replacement parts for a Taper Shaper in the past, I can say that Unique does sell them. I also never had a problem with Jim or Brian getting back to me. Sometimes a little slow, but they got back and apologized for the delay.

Just relating my experience with Unique. And, my machine was also bought on the second hand market.

I can think of no way of going out of business faster than not making parts or repairs available to anyone who has their product. That may be a way of ruining the resale so that one would have to buy new but why even consider buying in the first place if you know the re-sell value is zilch. Just my opinion but I certainly think it is a popular one.

Taper Shaper Repair Items

I received an email and voice mail this morning on this matter. I returned the call and emailed the customer once it was received.

As far as us not making repair parts for our machinery, you can purchase ANY part for any of our machinery at any time. I am not sure where this information was gathered about us “My question would be why they should help. At what point are the builders of equipment no longer responsible for their products. They may not sell parts for their equipment unless you purchased the machine directly from them. If this is the case then this machine may not be repairable and you will have to get quote for a new machine". You must be talking about someone else in our industry. We do not take responsibility for damaged shipment, for someone buying the machine second market, but will assist and sell any part on the Taper Shaper, or any other piece of equipment we manufacture.

We hope here at Unique Products we are known for helping EVERYONE, even the person that has NEVER bought a piece of equipment from us.

In closing, we at Unique Products, do not frequent AZBilliards often. We try to stay out of the harm's way, but are available at 812-376-8887, or email at cuelathes@yahoo.com

Also check out our NEWLY expanded website, with many new products for Cue Repairman, and Cue Makers.

Jim, I have a great amount of respect for you guys at Unique. I didn't mean to imply that you guys behaved in this manner. Just curious where most people think the buck stops per say. As an example lets say that someone purchased a cue monster second hand. They call you guys for programming help. I am not looking for the answer of what you would do, just what would cue makers "expect you to do". Does this make sence?
Nothing implied here as Unique Products is an asset to this community.

Jim.

Jim returned my call early this morning and was very kind. I had heard in the past they were difficult to get ahold of so I covered all possible bases. UPS has been somewhat "difficult".

As far as what I would expect from Unique or any other manufacturer, it is pretty simple and fairly typical of what I have experienced from successful business owners. Simply answer questions to the best of their abilities. The "original owner" clause is a bunch of crap IMO. Why should it matter who owns it? If you bought one product used and experienced poor support, how inclined are you to buy anything new from that manufacturer??

What if this wasn't my first Unique purchase? As in the new leather wrap fixture I purchased earlier this year. Am I compelled to spend thousands more if I am told to pound sand when I ask for help? Unique has NOT made me feel like I will be left out to dry and I will probably buy more products from them in the future.

Someone here basically accused me of being a cheap arse because of how I replied to his post. He asked for opinions on a potential product and I gave mine. His piece was considerably more than comparable items out there and I simply asked what made his worth 4 times as much.

The insults rolled in and I was accused of being a cheapskate and would probably never spend a dime with him. Ironic, because I already had. SO..how much money is someone expected to spend with a supplier BEFORE he is treated with a bit of respect? Don't like what people have to say about your product? How about NOT asking for opinions??

Furthermore, how many of us bought our lathes used and how SOL would we be if we couldn't get a bit of help from say...Jet, Clausing, Grizzly ect..

I am confident that Jim will help me get the damage fixed and the machine running properly.

Same thing happen to mine during shipment. Jim and Brian took care of the damage. They really should ship in a wooden box like Porper .

Ups

Good luck with UPS. Did a UPS store pack it? If not good luck getting anything out of UPS, they will blame it on the packing job and not the fact that it fell off a conveyor 3 stories onto concrete, etc. If a UPS store did pack it you will be okay.

I worked their for almost 8 years and saw car rims tore in half. A broken taper shaper is childs play.

The UPS Store did all the packing. This is not the first "run in" I have had with UPS. Damage can happen, I get that. The other "run in" involved a 5k supercharger kit that never even got scanned for departure. It was obviously stolen. Luckily, I kept the receipt and got insurance. I almost forgot.....

If they packed it then get all receipts from Unique for replacement parts and you can also have a mechanic or friend help install the parts and charge another $100 or so for labor. But get receipts for everything including the one for labor from a friend who helps you. They will pay, but be warned UPS is of late trying to get out of paying any claims they can. They owe me about $1700 right now. I hope it was insured fully or you will probably not get paid.
I do a ton of business with them and put down the weight of 57 punds in the wrong line. The declared value line, and they lost it and won't pay, even though we called and asked for them to correct the amount as soon as we noticed it.

any machine like this needs to be crated and held down inside a wooden crate bolted to the bottom of the crate and marked outside which side up printed on every side and the top then banded with at least 2 steel bands each direction. then it should be insured this is how we ship anything heavy or machinery that needs to be protected

1. Packing was trusted to UPS Store...a professional??? No sarcasm intended towards you there, but they obviously dropped the ball. I agree on how it SHOULD have been shipped.
2. It was insured.
