What's Wrong With Making Money?

I'm probably going to get flamed on this but I don't get it.

There's a number of folks that post on here that have a problem with, Instructors particularly, who offer their services. On most occasions a poster is asking for advice or lesson and when an instructor offers advice or lessons they get grief for doing so.

What's wrong with making a living or supplementing an income teaching how to play pool and billiards? What's wrong with telling someone the truth that certain things just can't be taught with words on some forum.

What puzzles me the most is it's nearly impossible to make a living at this sport and when someone does they get vilified. Cue Makers charge too much. Case makers are robbers. The paraphernalia mfg's are in the gimmick racket. Then on the other hand it's fine and dandy to rob someone in a game of 9 ball cause gambling is what you gotta do to learn this game. If you put your house up that'll make you play better.

And we all wonder why the game is going nowhere.

Give it a break. If someone is asking for something and someone else offers to supply what's asked for, let it be. The asker doesn't have to buy. At least there's a seller. In the old days there were no sellers. Would that be better? Willie Hoppe comes to mind. He went to his grave with most of what he knew.

It's been my experience that there are:yeah: guys out there claiming to be "Certified Instructors" who couldn't run a rack if all of the balls were hanging up in the pockets, and what's more, there are a lot of young people, mostly girls who seem to be willing to pay for these lessons.

I personally feel that if I can give someone the 7, then they aren't qualified to be giving lessons to anyone.

I do not agree with people coming on here and advertising their product or srevices. For example, I am the team manager for the CSI American Grand Masters, featuring Charlie (Hillbilly) Bryant, Corey Deuel, John (Mr 400) Schmidt and Earl (The Pearl) Strickland. I would love to be able to get on the main forum and tell every one that Earl Strickland and John Schmidt will be doing a exhibition and pool school tour starting January 8th to the 21st in the midwest. I guess that is not the right way to promote what you have to offer or let people know that the 4 hour pool school with Earl Strickland and John Schmidt is only $200.00 per person, thats only $50 per hour. Learning from 2 great players of this level and seeing inside the mind of a Champion the price is well worth it. "The CSI American Grand Masters will be touring the USA in 2010 and coming to a town near you" These are not things that I think should be in a post in the main forum. Also I don't think it would be right to mention that Team CSI is sponsored by BreakRak, TAR and Cuesports International. JMHO ;)

pool related forums

I believe this site is dedicated to pool related subjects. The fact that someone wants to sell dvd or books or whatever is pool related is fine. I have seen posts for csi,Johnny and Earl tour and I think its great info for those who may want to attend. I don't think you have to be a proffesional player to be a teacher. I believe you can learn something from everyone. Even if they can't run a full rack.

Well you may have a point, but if you hadn't shown my brothers in arms such a great time a few months back, I would feel the same way but any time that a person goes out of their way to show our men and women of the armed forces a little respect and consideration, I give them the JoeyA Slide.

Clowns to left of me, jokers to the right, here I am stuck in the middle with you. :grin-square:

BTW, is there any particular part of the country that these two U.S. Open 9 Ball Champions are going to be specializing in?

I wouldn't mind seeing that new addition Lee Brett and see what unique structured mechanics he can offer.

Joeay, what we did in St Robert, Mo Fort Leonard wood was something that was just great for us all. I will never forget that time and how quickly all the people in the industry came to our aid and donated cues, cases etc. We felt really proud to be a part of that. Thank you for the slide by the way. :)

I am working as we speak on getting the Mid West tour together. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. The Players on this trip will be Earl and Mr 400. We will be doing something special at the University of Michigan on Jan 9th But I am open to suggestions anywhere in the Mid West.

See there, I live 90 miles from Ft. Wood. Sure wish I could've contributed.

You know what you know.
You know what you don't know.
BUT
You don't know what you don't know.

bchilton...I haven't seen too many "certified instructors" who couldn't run a rack, if all the balls were hanging in the pockets, but there may be some. The bottomline is that rarely are the best instructors the best competitors (in any sport). Teaching and playing are two different mindsets and two different skill sets. Do you need a certain ability level, to be able to demonstrate what you're teaching (which is why there are different levels of 'certified instructors')? Yes. Do you have to be a champion player to be a great teacher? Nope!

Yeah, I was making big money. That was what got me in trouble, it was about a quarter inch too big!

I dont count other peoples money, never have never will. Unless i'm doing a biz deal or have a reason too. Why people count my $$$ is beyond me, and the funny thing is none of them are ever right. I have better things to do than worry about someone elses $$$, if I hire them for a job I look to see what the fair price for it is and go from there.

There is an option to never display signatures. It is well worth enabling.

That will be $100 please.

I agree with you to a certain point, but if you are going to teach a subject, you should at the very least have a firm grasp of the subject matter, ie, you should be able to execute the things that you are trying to teach.

There are some good and some great instructors out there, but there are some who are not qualified in my opinion.
