Just wondering what others have found to be a good tool for fixing mushrooming? There are so many out there don't want to buy a bunch to find one that does decent job.

I just wet the sides of the tip lightly and use the top of the rail. Just press the side of the tip after wetting against the rail top. Then just go back and forth down the rail while twisting the cue. Works well. Just don't be over bearing and break you ferrule tendon or shaft.
Poor pool table...
I use a Joe Porper Tip Burnisher. Sometimes in a blue moon it'll take the tip off the ferrule if the adhesives have gotten weak, that's why I do it at home. That way, I can reattach the tip if it needs to be done.
I've seen people do it on top of the rail on the felt. Not what I do. I use the table's body I guess you would say. No damage done. Its only leatherPoor pool table...

Mamono, Remember there is always the Black Magic Marker Trick to make the sides of the tip look brand new. Clean white ferrule and a nice Black tip.

amen on the porper burnisher. i keep one in my case and whenever i scuff and/or shape the tip i give it a few turns in there. since i started doing that i've had no mushrooms and no need for the little shaver i bought at the same time i got the burnisher.
I shed a tear when I see angry apes beat pool tables with their cues after missing the money ball... I guess its the trauma. Using saliva on the tip sidewalls and pressing them against the rails to flatten them out kind of reminds me of the VW commercial where the guy standing next to the VW licks the door handle to claim it as his own.
I know whatcha mean. The leather against hardwood, no harm really. I just don't see it as being very hygienic, neither is licking a car door handle but to each their own.
A cue lathe always worked the best for me.
