> I agreed to post an impartial review of a laminated,all-leather break/jump tip that cuetechasaurus offered for free in a recent thread. Here are my results so far.

The tip is kind of a funny color before installation, kind of a mottled reddish-purple. Neither side was marked, but neither of these make a damn in the final, installed tip. The installation went VERY clean, and something grabbed my attention immediately. Instead of the typical dust/shavings I usually see when cutting tips in my lathe, this tip produced a very plastic-like "ribbon" style chip,an indicator of what might have been done to produce these tips. The shaping process was similar in nature. One observation about installation when using a utility blade. Use a NEW one...

I only broke about 20 racks with it so far,and hit a few balls. My honest opinion is that this is a FINE product. It is WAY,WAY harder than any reasonable person can use to actually shoot with, very similar in sound and grip characteristics to a phenolic tip,but indeed holds chalk NICELY.

As far as breaking with it,it did the job about as well as can be expected, and although it doesn't have a lot of play on it yet, hasn't mushroomed even the slightest bit.

He threw me an added bonus,a sample of a laminated playing tip as well .

He booked a winner here,Tommy D.

I just received my tips today also,,,,, but will have to wait till this weekend to have the tip put onto my J&J breaker....

as for the playing tip,, i pm'd Cuetechasaurus about the playing tip, and he said it was a "hard" tip but played like a soft time. So IDK, I'll probably have to put it on my back up playing cue to see how it goes.

I haven't gotten mine either, then again i wasn't in any other post.

:(

Can i still get one?

I sent the tips out to those who PM'ed me their info. My inbox got flooded with lots of requests, and I could only send out to the first 15 initially, then my friend Juan made 5 more. I went in the order I recieved the PM's.

Well here is my review on the break-jump tip.

I had it installed on my J&J break jump cue and for a layer'd tip its pretty hard! Its no phenolic tip, but it still breaks the balls nicely. I used it for about 20 breaks. And was still getting a good spread on my breaks and still was able to pot balls.
I didn't try jumping with the tip cuz I still have a elite jumpcue.
The hard playing tip I had installed on my back-up playing "elite" cue and for it being a hard tip it felt pretty soft. I only hit a few balls but I could tell it was easy to put a lot of english on the cb with this tip.

Break TIP
I love it . I found that it broke very very well. It holds chalk and I can put alot of English on the cue ball on the break. I broke about 40 time with the break tip ...

Shooting TIP
I didn't like it at all , Way to hard for me ...
My friend , who likes hard tips , says it is the best he ever used and would like to buy some when they are for sale .We played for about 2 hours
and he had no miscues and he could put all the english on the cue ball that he wanted to . He said the feel was perfect....

Review as requested

I worked with Dale Chilton to make Flying eagle Jumper. Jumper has 2 tips and ferrules for all jump shots
These have 2 shafts 28inches and 12inches collar to collar. I wanted it 3/8-10 so I could use the shaft for breaking also. Dale normally uses unilock. And a different ferrule material. I put3/4 inch phenolic on this one.(glued and screwed. The laminated tip sounded hard tapping it and was softer when I stuck a stanley blade in center to ck hardness- I took the tip down 3 times before It was hard enough for breaking?jumping . It held chalk well. , The best feature was accuracy, it broke and jumped good. It does not have the sound of g-10,or hard plastics. Looked like tips the Filipino's use Talisman BK-hards (laminated. I cut the playing tip in half and will post when the tip(shaft is ready. Thanks I rate it thumbs up for Cuetechasaurur-thats a mouthful mark

My review for now!

I just got a chance, (finally) to put the J/B tip on that was so generously offered. I found it to be an excellent tip with very little difference in the spread of the balls after breaking about twenty racks of nine ball. It does seem to give me much more cue ball control and feels as though it stays on the cue ball longer. Probably doesn't, but it feels like it does. All in all I see very little difference in this and a phenolic tip for me. I have not had a chance to jump with it because I was on a friends new Diamond that RKC set up and no jumping on that beauty ever!!
I've also just received a couple Samsara J/B tips that I'll be putting on one of my other break cues soon so I can offer a comparison of both soon.
Thanks Again!!
Dan

> In the interest of being thorough,I am posting further results on the j/b tips cuetechasaurus was giving away a while ago.

My original review hasn't changed,it just has more hard-won data.

The tip hasn't mushroomed even .002 since installation, and I've broken over 300 racks with it. You just about can't ask for better.

I tap it heavily before play, and periodically during, and it has not moved shape-wise,and is still at the original height,so I know this product is durable.

There is NO sign of delamination or other quality issues.

The Samsara is really going to have to be something to get me to switch. Tommy D.

Thanks for the update, Tommy. The tips (made by Juan Rios) are entirely made out of leather, for those of you who will be playing in the upcoming BCAPL Nationals.

May I suggest HIGHLY that you or he submit the tips to the BCAPL for certification.

The reason?

Because when you get out there and some referee decides that your tip is the equivalent of phenolic for whatever reason then your customer will have an argument on their hands and there is NO DOUBT that the referee wins in that situation.

So I suggest that you send it in and let them test it and get their blessing.

Then provide doctor's notes for everyone to keep in their cases.

I have not tested these nor played with them but someone made the comment about them being very similar to phenolic. So in order to alleviate the BCAPL's fears of damage to the cue ball you should have them tested by the BCAPL.

I am sure you are way ahead of me on this.

Will do John, thanks for the info.
