Does anybody feel that in some of the recent matches we've seen there has been some obvious dumping going on? If you think back on a few match ups and the results some things just don't add up.

like an NFL quarterback who lost.. watching ESPN on Monday morning... listening to the haters...
did he miss ??? or did he dump???

it's hard to tell...
that's why guys who just lost money like to spout it... because

and if they can shout loudest.. maybe the guy who lost them money gets killed or maimed...
because a man who made a bet couldn't take his loss like a man...

A bad day is a bad day, if you're off you struggle through the entire match. That wasn't the case in a couple of recent matches.

it happens from time to time but without being specific it's kinda hard to jump on the bandwagon.
Yeah I will Rib but for the time being I want to see if anybody else noticed something in one of the recent matches that was a little odd. Especially for a couple players with their talents.

I was thinking the exact same thoughts during all 4 nights of the Mosconi Cup.

This was not one missed shot. These were two professional players at the top of their game. There has been quite a bit of posting on here about one match in particular but thus far nobody has stated or even mentioned something very unusual about the match.

is wrong with pool," is quite a leap of logic. Do many pro pool players who
lose get killed or maimed? I guess you mean good for pool is , I dunno, what? For me it's already good.
Frankly when you look at the pool players I don't hear of any jumping into the bed of a pickup truck his woman was trying to escape in and being killed in the process, or shooting himself in the leg with a gun he had in
his belt while visiting a strip club, or DUI and running down and killing a pedestrian. Not one pool player has ever been chased by his wife and mother of his children from his home with a 4 iron after ruining his career because of affairs with innumerable women were made public.
Why as a matter of fact pro pool players act like complete ladies and gentlemen when they win or lose a match. No demonstrations in the end zone. Billiard players wear tuxedos in some tournaments.
Let's grow it like the NFL , or the PGA, or the NBA, or MLB. Maybe pool
can be in the headlines too. Let's make it a product for the masses to watch.
I want players, who excel, to be reward more properly and I like having my 9-ball heroes. But most of all it's a game I want to play myself, every day I can.

Was it a one on one match or a tournament?
Did somebody wink and grin when they did it?
I saw Efren and Francisco both miss almost straight in shots on the money ball in a tournament a few years back. They are probably 99 out of a 100 on this shot. Did they both dump in separate matches or was this the hundredth shot? Ga Young missed a straight in shot for an easy win of a tourney, would have been her first WPBA win I believe. Wonder if she dumped?
Speaking for me personally I have stunk up whole events and I have ruined my weekend with one major fubar, even after everyone else had accepted there was no stopping me and I would be the winner.
Nobody that doesn't know with inside information can tell if somebody dumped or had a major malfunction when something looks odd. When I did dump for years stalling to keep my winning percentage down a little gambling nobody ever accused me of dumping. Anybody that dumps at the pro level is very unlikely to make it more obvious than I did as a shortstop.

Making 9-ball more interesting

A straight pool buddy and I played a few games of 9-ball yesterday, experimenting several variations on the rules to spice up the game. Here are the changes we tried:
- "No luck 9-ball": regular TE rules, but (1) 9-ball on the break isn't a win, (2) 9-ball legally pocketed after ball in hand isn't a win (so, you can't line up the cueball and the OB to pocket the 9) and (3) shots are called. If the 9-ball is pocketed in those conditions, the 9 is spotted, it is not a foul, but the player's inning ends. If any other ball drops in an uncalled pocket, it stays down but the player's inning ends too. This really made 9-ball palatable to us, and allowed some strategic shots.
- "2 cushion 9-ball": regular TE rules, but the cueball must contact 2 or more rails during the shot (before or after hitting the OB). If not, the pocketed ball is spotted and the player's inning ends. If playing a safety shot without pocketing, not hitting at least 2 rails results in a foul. It's not all that hard, and allows interesting situation, such as pocketing 2 or more balls directly to create a problem cluster on the foot spot and annoy your opponent if he didn't see it coming. This was the variant I prefered.
- "3 cushion 9-ball": same as above, but with 3 rails. We found it dicey too often when most of the balls are on the table. Many times, there just isn't enough space to squeeze the cueball through and play position at the same time. So it's a bit frustrating. It might be better with a rack of 7-ball but we didn't try.
- "1 cushion 9-ball": regular TE rules, but the cueball must contact a rail before hitting the OB. Interesting, but leads to long strings of safety shots as soon as one of the players fails to get proper position, thus can become tedious.
What do you think? Has anyone tried other variants of 9B?
