Hey guys i recently acquired this gem that has been part of a collection for at least the past 20 years. I was told that the owner of this cue recently passed away and was a very close friend of gus szamboti. This may explain an intersting detail in the cue. I can say that this cue is mint and looks unplayed. Cue also appears to have a cortland linen wrap. Ill let the pictures speak for themselves.

Any info or history about this cue would be appreciated. I cant wait to hear what my fellow az'ers have to say.

Thanks
ron

Boti Blank?

I remember seeing this cue on a website. The site was a collection of cues, in NY, NY I think with lots of Szambotis.

The claim was that Gus Szamboti built the forearm of your cue. It has been confirmed that some early Schons had Szamboti blanks.

Great looking cue. Love it.

Ditto here, but I couldn't remember what the connection was. You've got a prize winner, though, one way or another. Congrats on a super pick up!

Its my understanding is Gus did make a few blanks for Runde, but the cue in the pic dosent appear to have Gus's points, they are too short. As far as the name on the Delron butt cap-it looks lik a after thought to me. I'd have Barry look at this cue befor I got 2 excited. I'm sure it plays good, the wrap is good. But someone who knows alot more than I do needs to chim in, If this was my cue I would contact Barry. Good luck, I hope it is what it appears to be.

it's out of the late tony catucci's collection.

think it was made specially for tony.

thanks for all the information so far guys. it didnt even cross my mind that gus szamboti might have played a part in this fantastic cue but that would have been an awesome bonus lol. the engraving in the butt is definitely an eye opener though.

thanks

cue is nice. real keeper. shafts are wrong era for this cue. first year schon marked shafts with vertical designation was 1994. have 3 runde schon cues with silver ring around shaft collar, all 6 shafts are unmarked.first yr. schon ever marked shafts was 1993 and these were marked schon or schon 13 on the shaft collars. still a very nice acquisition.

I was a friend of Tony Cattuci and hung out in his pool room in Jersey.
When he wanted to sell pool cues in the room he asked Gus who visted quite often as he and Tony were good friends which cues to sell for low end and high end. At that time (early 80"s) Gus recommended Helstetter as the low end cue and Schon as the high end. Tony stocked Helmstetters and a few Schons. All the Schons were made to Gus's specs as to 59" two shafts and ivory furles. I know this as fact because i bought a Schon from Tony and also worked at the room selling these cues.
The fact that Gus may have been involed in a Schon for Tony does not suprise me. Tony had a large Zamboti collection. I probably saw 12 or more cues and that was in 1991 when i left the state. I know Gus passed before that but i never knew if i saw all the cues Tony had.

since all of tony catucci's schons were ordered and made to szamboti specs could gus szamboti have provided the materials for such a cue? (forearm blank etc)

thanks
ron

Love hearing stories like this. What year(s) was this 1982-83? Thanks.

I met Tony in 1997 and he told me that if I could not afford a Szamboti that a Schon is a good alternative. He never showed me any Gus Szambotis but he always showed me the Barry Szambotis he recieved from Barry every few months. He also had a few Southwests as well.

ron, people usually ask these questions before they buy a cue. : )
know barry asked little ken to sell some of tony's cues . .

tony told me the story of this cue about 4 or 5 yrs ago, but i forget the details.
sure barry could fill you in!
you selling this cue?

schon

I had an opportunity to buy this cue about a year ago. So I asked Bob about the Blank situation and he told me, that he has never made a cue from a Szamboti blank. And I'm quite sure that he stated that he's never made a cue from another cuemakers blank.
Merry Christmas,
Greg
