1/1 runde schon????????????

Love hearing stories like this. What year(s) was this 1982-83? Thanks.
I think Tony opened the Original Ballroom (Toms River NJ) in about 1981 or so with about 12 tables and demand was so high he renovated a closed bowling alley next door and moved over there and had 36 tables all full size Gold Crowns (25 or so of the Gold Crowns he got out of a closed down poolroom that had been closed for many years and i think the room was in Brooklyn NY) )with room for about 6 more. So it was around 1984 or so that he began selling Schons. I bought the 2nd one he ordered it was ebony with thin red points (sharp points not rounded). Here is a story about Tony and his Zambotis that i have never read here.
Tony would sell a couple to people he trusted with the provision that if you wanted to sell it you could only sell it back to him and he would give you what you paid for it less any cost to refinish or rewrap it.
At that time when Gus was still alive the wait for one of his cues was about a year. Less if he liked you. And the basic cue with 2 shafts,59" and ivory fureles (sp?) was $425.00 hand delivered by Gus to the poolroom.

A basic Gus with two shafts for $425.00! Delivered in person!!!!! Talk about a dream come true for any cue lover!!

Thanks for sharing the memories.

Well guys here is the response I received from schon cues and I have to say that I'm quite happy even though this might stir up some some issues here on az.

Hi,

I made this for Tony with a Szamboti blank I had. My partner, Terry Romine, bought hundreds of blanks to use in cues before there was a Schon company, They were built at Romine’s High Pockets. I had a few around from those days and Tony begged me for years to make a cue from him. Barry Szamboti actually picked it up from me and delivered it to tony…Evan Clarke

Hello I was hoping you could give me some information/history of this cue I recently purchased from the estate of the late Tony Catucci. Anything at all would be helpful.

Thanks,

Ron

I was a friend of Tony Cattuci and hung out in his pool room in Jersey.
When he wanted to sell pool cues in the room he asked Gus who visted quite often as he and Tony were good friends which cues to sell for low end and high end. At that time (early 80"s) Gus recommended Helstetter as the low end cue and Schon as the high end. Tony stocked Helmstetters and a few Schons. All the Schons were made to Gus's specs as to 59" two shafts and ivory furles. I know this as fact because i bought a Schon from Tony and also worked at the room selling these cues.
The fact that Gus may have been involed in a Schon for Tony does not suprise me. Tony had a large Zamboti collection. I probably saw 12 or more cues and that was in 1991 when i left the state. I know Gus passed before that but i never knew if i saw all the cues Tony had.

I'm sure that there are some folks that have both R series Schons and Szamboti's. How different is the hit?
