I never paid attention to them 20 yrs ago when i'd attend the occasional tournament , i only played in weeknight local tournaments. Since i have started paying attention to pool tournaments lately i 've noticed that some tournaments auction all the players prior to the start and others wait until it is whittled down to the final 32.
Just looking at it it looks like waiting till the final 32 gives the bidder and better idea of a players ability because he has watched them play people of various talent. I know this isn't working with small fields.
My question is does anyone know of a website that explains calcuttas somewhat. Is there pretty much a standard ratio of payout to the player and bidder?Does the house get a cut? Why does the player get any unless he buys his/herself in the auction?
