Turning down a shaft

I've searched and cannot find anything about this. I probably overlooked it.
Anyways, I bought a used osarah cue and the taper just isn't right for my hand. I wanted to have the taper extended to maybe a 10-12inch taper. would that be bad for the cue? how does it affect deflection and feel of the hit?

I personally like Rick Howard cues and his taper on shafts. I bought a cue that a local cuemaker had made and it really played poorly. I sent the shaft to the cue to Rick for a retaper to his specifications and that freaking cue played great!

While I recommend Rick for his taper and outstanding prices, if there is another cuemaker you like, a phone call is an easy way to make this happen.

Nothing bad about this. Just imagine if the maker had decided to make a longer taper in the first place, the end result would be the same as you doing it now. Any good cue repair person could handle this for a relatively low cost--$20 or 30. Deflection shouldn't change much, since you aren't changing tip mass. Change to the hit would be hard to estimate; too many variables would have to be specified. If you aren't happy with the taper now, I'd say you don't stand to risk very much. Go for it.

Any good cue repair person could do the job for you.
It is unlikely that you will notice any significant difference in cue ball squirt with a 10 to 12 inch pro taper shaft as opposed to the one you now have. You may find, however, it is more comfortable to play with and this alone could be worth the price of re-tapering.

IM sure U came to the right place,there is alot of knowledge lurking on these forums,and some reputable cuemakers .But not everybody can do a good taper though.Good Luck :smile:

Ask the same question in the Ask the Cue Maker forum bud.
I had 2 13mm shafts turned down for me, one went to 12,50mm and the other to 12mm.
For myself, I can't say it caused any more deflection, and as far as hit, 100% improvement as I don't care for a 13mm and a conical taper.
You might get one of the cue makers to make you a new shaft and if you like the way it plays, send him the original for a retaper at a later date.
I know the cue makers can make a dynomite shaft for around $150.
