please tell me your thoughts on this.

I was playing at a local tourament and the other player walked in front of me as I was about to shoot the eight ball and unscrewed his cue. My thoughts was telling me he was done and I won so I just slapped the eight around table, then suddenly he ran over and screwed his cue back together and shot the eight.

I think you should have pocketed the shot or asked if he was conceding the game regardless of his sharking.

Always pocket the ball, even if he's putting his cue in his case and walking out the door.

What Rules????SPF=randyg

That happened to me once before at a bar... always take the last shot unless they explicitly tell you they're done. (This is around people who don't play pool, though... such as bars. In a tournament when someone says "Good game" or takes apart their cue thats explicit enough.)

What you should have done: don't shoot the 8. Just walk over and shake his hand and say nice match.
If he questions the win/loss, call the TD over and have him/her explain the unscrewing/forfeiting. Your opponent will never do it again I'm sure.
However, make sure the tournament your playing enforces this rule. Otherwise just make the 8 and win.;)

If I believe someone is conceding the shot I don't shoot and get up. If they didn't concede then you can reset and put full commitment into the shot instead of putting in half an effort thinking i've won.

Here's what's supposed to happen under World-Standardized Rules:

1.11 Concession
If a player concedes, he loses the match. For example, if a player unscrews his jointed playing cue stick while the opponent is at the table and during the opponent’s decisive rack of a match, it will be considered a concession of the match.

I think you should have pocketed the shot or asked if he was conceding the game regardless of his sharking.

This, by all means! Some will say that by un-screwing his cue he was conceding the match but it depends on the rules of the tournament. That is not a universal rule.

Besides, it would have FELT a lot better for you to have watched the winning 8-ball drop into the pocket. Always finish what you started!!!

Unfortunately even though many organizations have tried to make universal rules, a lot of bars and pool halls don't give a crap. Unscrewing SHOULD be a loss of game, and in many professional events it WOULD be a loss of game, but in some local place running a small time tournament they don't automatically hand you the win and will not necessarily side with you (though if they're decent people and experienced players, they will).

When I've played with people in the past, I also automatically rake 'em when they unscrew. Even had some squabbles with friends over it. You unscrew, you lost. You do anything else to shark me during my game ball, you lost. But again the tournament director/owner/whoever might not see it that way. He's holding the cash so he's the guy you gotta humor. So you probably should play it safe and ask him if that's a win for you.

What's supposed to happen under standardized rules may not be what happens in a bar.

It would be best to finish the game. Apparently the guy playing pudge thought the game wasn't over.

Unless the local bar rules say differently.... It ain't over 'till the fat lady sings.

Regardless of rules I feel unscrewing your stick means I concede, however you did say it was a bar. Remember this is the same place where a drunk will pick up your $500 cue and swear its a house cue.

If the other person is a dolt just walk over to your area without shooting and act surprised that you thought everyone understood etiquette when he tries to say he didn't concede.

Thanks for all the input. They are using apa rules. It 50/50 resturant and pool hall. they spent money on diamond tables and 860 felt so they have some sense. He not only unscrewed cue he left the table area but when friend said he missed he suddenly came back. Tournament director said cue was not fully unscrewed???

Not really almost pregnant?

I had a similar situation somebody says "nice game" as I get down to shoot. I sit down without shooting and listen to him explain for awhile how he wasn't really trying to shark me.

It was worth it just to watch him squirm.

Don't Shoot!

Just stand up and shake his hand,no need to shoot the eight.Unscrewing is an act of concession and a loss of game/match.If he then tells you you must shoot the 8 to win you can then take it up with an official or TD or just shoot the 8ball.

When it is a player you know well or a buddy then you can 3 rail the 8 or whatever but don't do this with a stranger or a known nit type.

What he said.

I'm playing in an APA 8-Ball league right now and knowing that the majority of the players in this type of league are new to the game and really out to have fun, I never assume they know all the rules and etiquette. Even if he comes up to the table and knocks the 8 ball into the pocket with his hand I always act surprised and ask him if that's the game. Sure, I know it's the game, but I make sure he tells me he's conceding. I never assume anything, especially in a bar where you don't know how much people had to drink and don't know what they are capable of.

This is the answer---the only way to do it
