I don't know the differences in the two, but I can tell you the ones he makes himself in Florida are very nice.
That's the difference. One set are made by Jack and the others are overseas reproductions.

I think its only fair to bring everyone up to date on Justis West cases.
The John Lin Cue Case Factory is no longer making the Justis West line of cases. This is based on several reason but the main one being John Lin's failure to pay as agreed in our contract.
We have no further plans on doing business overseas.

I'd bet money the factory will continue to make your cases, even without having your permission. Everything is knocked off in China, and they didn't even have to reverse engineer your design, you gave it to them.
Since its the internet and my tone might not be understood, I'm not trying to insult anyone. I'm just stating what will probably happen, as I've been to China several times and have seen in person tons of knocked off products.

That was pretty much the intent all along. The Justis West cases are pictured here in a prominent catalog with Jack's Florida address and several pictures of Jack's cases that he made for Efren, Bustamante and Gabe Owen. The insinuation is that the Justis West (NO MENTION OF "WEST") cases are made by Jack in Florida and not made in China.
I doubt that the cases will be sold to the USA, perhaps brought in on the gray market but I have no doubt that they will continue to be sold here in China and marketed as if they are made in the USA.
The factory that made the Justis West cases was knocking off Jack's work long before he had any deal with Jack. They made a vinyl knockoff with Jack's designs embroidered on the case instead of hand tooled. The also made a leather version where the decoration was laser engraved.
They knocked off my Instroke designs ten years ago and in fact they knock off Talisman, Murnak, Porper and well, pretty much every design you can think of.
You're right though, now they have a "legal" tie in to the Justis name and it's pretty certain that they will continue to use it in China as long as they care to in full knowledge that no one is going to stop them.
It's interesting that Justis West line is still being sold in Japan???

Factory is the problem, they still have "artists" there. 5000 years knowledge is hard to come by. If you ever visit China, goto a flea market, and you will find gems with fraction of the cost.
Custom made by Chinese artists are top notch. Let's all remember that.

Well I would think that there are dealers with some stock of the cases for sale which predate Jack's decision. Whether or not the factory stops producing cases under the Justis West brand there will always be a certain number that have been made to date that exist.
I just spent a weekend in Wuxi and up there they have some of the most incredible wood sculptures on earth. Lots and lots of shops selling them from the mundane to the intricate. And not cheap either, we went to one place run by an old man who does the work himself and his work was beyond words and he had a story for every piece about what he saw in the wood and was bringing out of it.
There is no doubt that Chinese artistry and craftsmanship is alive and well. It is the business practices of factories and trade agents here that leaves much to be desired. Treacherous would be the right word to describe it. Chinese manufacturing relies heavily on getting their designs from other sources as the industrial design in China itself is not really mature. To be sure there are some really really good designers here but they are in the minority and USUALLY not working for someone else.
Things like this Justis licensing deal gone bad are commonplace here. I can't tell you how much my frustration level has gone up when dealing with small and medium sized Chinese factories and shops. I love China, I love the Chinese people, I find this land and culture to be fascinating. It's a country in some weird state between modern convenience and 18th century practices. My friend who is Chinese put it to me this way. He said that a lot of Chinese heroes and mythical figures are celebrated for succeeding through trickery and that is why so many Chinese businessmen practice it.
To be fair, I have found many factory owners who are completely honest, at least they have been with me as far as I can tell, and whose word is their bond. So it goes both ways.
Each day I am faced with equal parts frustration and fascination.
