Update on the Des Moines pool scene

I didn't like this tourney at all and not because I didnt do good in it I dont expect to after taking so much time off. The handicapp thing is a joke. I played Jose first round told the directors he was atleast a A player and nothing happened. Randy got an opponent Travis moved up in a match. Travis is a B player. I played with him alot in KC and I feel bad for him because this probably is the only tournament he was going to cash in this year and got it stole from him. They didn't want my opinion even though I've lived were or matched up with all the players from out of town.

``The brackets were messed up it was basically 2 different tourneys. I thought that was shady they know what there doing and if they don't they shouldn't be running this event. I know they didn't have a 128 man bracket there but the 2 64 man brackets could be made into one. I feel like this could of been a move to make sure some players didn't run into other players until the end. With all the handicapping stuff going on I think the directors have to much control over the outcome.

This tourney was a good start we had a good turnout but there needs to be some changes to keep it going if there planning big events 4 times a year. I would also like to see timed out matches so you know when your going to play. I think a director that is not playing or betting on someone is a must.

I would like to thank everyone who put in time to run this event and Dogs for the added money.

I agree with you there. I felt like Travis was a B player, B players can break and run. He just played real solid against me and I took my loss and moved on.You were on the money all weekend. Get that oil back in that left arm.

@Gary, I agree with your post, don't know how to multi quote across pages yet. That's what it's all about.

1. Why is it that there was no 128 man bracket? You would have to think that with some money added and all the hype we would get more then 64 potentially right? You mean to tell me in the history of Des Moines pool we have never had a bracket like this done?

2. We need to vote as a city on an official tournament director for these things. This person has to be fair and non-biased, energetic, knowledgeable on the skill levels of most of the players. Someone who will promote the shit out of this tournament which includes online, flyers at leagues, etc. Is this unreasonable? Is there no one in Des Moines as a whole we can trust to be that person? Will Big Dogs not let us do that and "pick" who they want to run the show? If we are shit out of luck then it's time to try to get some diamonds in Stix ya know!?

3. Do not move up someone during a match because that is ridiculous. Afterwards we might need guidelines on reasons to move someone up if this is feasible.

4. Define the handicaps more IF possible. I agree that a B player can occasionally break and run a rack. I do it and consider myself a B player. Is there a set more thorough handicap guideline we can use to define this or is it basically a joke? If you want a 128 man tournament you need B players, period. There are a lot in Des Moines.

5. Streaming - Is there anyone in Des Moines with the cability and/or equipment to do this? Cost? Something to think about and discuss.

As for the gambling aspect I was a little disapointed to hear this...not necessarily because there was no gambling, but I would agree everyone wants the nuts. Nice little story about the D players having a blast. No matter how much I hope to improve in my game, I hope I never lose this. I have told several friends of mine if I ever get to the point where I won't hit balls with them, or only play if I am gambling, that it will be a sad day for me in pool and I should just quit. Nothing wrong with wanting to gamble, but when you can't just play pool with your friends for the love of the game, you aren't a pool player anymore, but a greedy robot!

There is a thread on here called something like, whats changed about the game of pool since you started playing. I made a post bacially saying this. What has changed for me is me, my bro and my friends dont just go out and hit balls ALL NIGHT LONG like we use to. Granted real life screwed some of us, but just the idea of it seems gone for alot of people.

I agree with the real life taking affect as it should...but I still hit balls with friends either at my house, their house, the bar on a Friday or Saturday night, and at league without NEEDING to gamble. It probably doesn't help my game, but it is a sacrifice I am willing to take to enjoy the game.

Amen to that!!

I wish I got the "rush" from gambling that everyone talks about, but I don't. I am too worried about loosing my hard earned money, and just can't relax. I end up going retarded and loosing because of something stupid I did or just miss an easy ball because I am over thinking it. Anyone have any beta-blockers? If I could play as good as I do when I'm just goofing around I would be a rock star. But like Jason said, life happened to me and I don't have the time to put in the game to get the results I want, and know I have the ability to achieve.

Maybe we should have a free tournament where everyone is a winner? just kidding....

By the way.... I love you guys.. ..... where is my medication?:thud:

Tournament, crybabies and solutions

I feel the handicapping of these tournaments are difficult. Psycho hit it on the head, A,AA, and Master should be in the same grouping all these players can make balls and depending on the break and layout of the balls can beat up on each other. The B,C,D players should be another grouping and have a hard time running racks. The third grouping should be the pro's. One interesting scenerio would be to make it a short race within your grouping say a race to 3, if you play outside of your grouping Pros 8, A= 6, BC=4, but within your grouping race to 3. This would create some upsets!

If your in the low part of your grouping its time to put in your time to get better! Quit wanting something for nothing. As for getting moved up most players are striving to get moved up, I'm sure Jimmy is proud to be moved up in ranking. As for all of you Champions who want a handicap I guess I don't understand how you are Iowa State Master Champions and you want a spot?

I thought the tournament was run fairly and think there are too many crybabies. If I was the manager I would think twice about putting up with all the bull especially from a few people on this site. Little Dog or I mean Big Dog seems to have some anger management issues, seems to me the dog is digging his own hole. Jody is a fair man and runs a good tournament and with the handicap tried to keep everyone happy,so much for that idea! I guess the new title of this post should be Frost, a few crybabies and the rest of the DM pool players. (although it seems like you have lost a lot of posts due to the bull from a few of the regulars that do post on this site.)

Another idea would be to give a bonus to the highest finisher in each grouping, maybe a hundred or they get their entry fee back. Just some ideas I see from the outside.

Not that i don't value your opinion . But why is it people who wanna call others out always hide behind a fake board name ? I think it is pretty obvious who i am. Everything i say on here i will and do say in public. Unlike most the others i see on here running their mouths on a daily/weekly basis. Then you see them in public and they don't say boo.

Thanks for your opinion and for reading our thread mystery man.

Well, I'm pretty sure I know who you are...not impressed. So why didn't you single everyone else out who has an opinion? I have stated mine, and apparently it bothers you. I don't want a spot! I think you know me better than that, if you are who I think you are.

Do you think I care how I finished, NO I don't. I just need to shoot better next time, that's all. I just want to see the best possible tourney for the pool players of DSM, and the players that come from out of town. If things aren't ran correctly, people won't drive over here from Omaha or Kansas City. Jody apparently after running many tournaments, doesn't know what he's doing!

So how am I digging my own hole by stating that things are the way they are? Or is it because of who I talk about on here? If you think that I'm the only one that feels this way, you are sadly mistaken! I can't help that what I say on here sometimes pisses a couple people off, but at least it's all true. And who are you to judge me anyway...once again, if you are who I think you are, you have no room to judge anyone else! I might have some anger issues, but they are only towards a few people who hurt pool in this area. I don't think you really know the situation enough to say some of the things you did.

So why don't you tell everyone who you are! Not 100% sure about who you are, but I'm fairly certain. If you are that person, I did try to talk to you and you wouldn't have it.

What does Master Team Champion have to do with singles play exactly? My team has won a few team titles, but I'm sure all of the AA players in the last tournament and most of the A players would like to gamble with me on a bar box.

I feel my A rating was correct. I only played three players with a higher rating in the tournament and I won one of the three matches.

For the record, I would gladly have played in a non handicapped tournament too.

Whomever you are, say your name one time. I probably don't even know you anyway. If I do know you I bet its nothing more than an acquaintence.

I disagree people are crying, crying is like oh he beat me and wouldnt adjust so hes a nit. I write that up as crying. Stating factual information isn't really crying though. Sometimes you have to say stuff over and over again.

I don't really feel much of a need to go off about it all though at this point because I know its all hot air. End of the day..who cares?

tourney dos and don'ts

Get someone to run it who doesn't play or buy in calcutta. Get the people who run Olathe to come run it. they'll have a 128 man board.

moving people up/down should be voted on by a committe during the tourney, however, never during a match. either before the match or after.

Get a room owner that gives a sh**t about pool and not just raping the customers for quick cash.

Get some real food or have a lunch wagon with good food on grounds. Deep Fried crap and pizza just don't cut it.

Why even handicap, olathe draws the same amount of players or more and they don't handicap.

It is one thing to come on this thread and give ideas on how to better a tourney, it is another to talk smack! I think it should be mandatory that you have to give your name when posting.

Definitions of a crybaby: Someone that reports your post for speaking the truth about them. Someone that would cheat to win. Someone that complains during every match of a handicapped tourney in order to get the other player moved up.

I could go on and on, but why beat dead horses!

Huh, I think he just read my mind! Thank you for your input!!

I would like to use this forum to publicly thank all those who played in and promoted our 8 ball tournament this past weekend at Big Dog Billiards. Thank you to Chris Jeffers from pool4u.com and his helpers for professionally setting up and running the live streaming over the internet. Thank you to Jody McLaughlin and Rob Bish for running the tournament, drawing the brackets and participating on the competition committee. Thank you to Mke Farley, aka. Frost for successfully running the calcutta. He kept everyone interested and entertained.
We would like to run more of these events in the future and understand that some changes will need to be made. Handicapping for example, will need to made less subjective. Maybe handicaps that are next to each other play to the same number ie, AA and Pro. We will need a 128 player bracket if we have more than 64 players. That way two people who meet on the winners side won't have to play each other on the losers side until much later in the tournament. I would also like to see a larger gap in the pay outs to the first through 6th places. That way chopping near the end of a tournament won't seem like such a natural thing to do. If the money gaps were larger there would be more incentive to play it out to the end for a true champion.
I would encourage anyone who has suggestions on how to better this or other events at Big Dog's to come and meet with me there in person. I'm there Thursday night through Monday morning every other week. A forum like this can be a great place for exchanging ideas that can make tournaments run better and get higher participation. It can also be a place for petty name calling and snide comments.
My phone practically blew up yesterday from customers calling me about what was being written in this forum about me, my business, my employees and others. What I read were some mean spirited comments including opinions, partial truths and outright lies. Some of these by people who weren't even at Big Dog's all weekend. For example, it was written that I (someone at Big Dog's) had the nerve to ask Kampas to borrow a tap from a local repair man to make threads for Daniels cue. Not true. First of all, I cut that type of thread with live tooling, not a tap. Secondly, Daniel has a different cue repair guy that works on that cue.
When writing in a forum, it seems real easy to get caught up in the negative, nasty name calling type of talk. Remember in school when the junior high girls were always whispering and writing notes about each other?

Congratulations on a great tournament to Jimmy, Daniel and Justin.

After a few conversations with some of our more respectful posters, I agree that closing the thread due to Jon's (Big dog ) posts is unfair to the many people who have contributed in a constructive manner.

Jon ( Big dog ) is now forbidden from participating in this thread as a stipulation to re-opening it for other people to enjoy.

Have a nice day guys.
