Pool room observation

When I open my pool room the first rule will be the waist band of the pants will reside on the hips. If not, my very large friend Guido will provide that individual with a super atomic wedgie. To make up for it, I'll give the kid a glass of milk and tube of antiburn cream. :)

Hey, NewStroke, does Guido know Lou and Tony. A lot of those guys know each other. They're like pisanos, or something. :)

Visited a nice room this past weekend which was hosting a Shannon Daulton tournament. I knew that being affiliated with Shannon there would be talented players there and I wasn't disappointed even though, I think, this was a first time hosting by the room. Layout out the room was very pool friendly for both serious players and those just seeking recreation. However, I doubt I will go there again. The house music was a continuous stream of profanity filled lyrics describing various forms of sex oriented lyrics whose overall intent seemed to purposefully demean women. You know the kind I mean. The kind preteens use before they ever had sex as a way of impressing their peers of their approaching sexual prowness; they hope. Also lyrics, pedophiles, rapists, and other sexual perverts prefer amongst themselves and while inside their closets. I'm not a prude by any means and having spent several years in the Navy I have most likely used every bad word known but I always picked my spot and group to be sure it wasnt disrespectful to anyone outside my immediate group. Looking around the room I saw boys and girls and men and women on one side who could care less that someone just ran six racks. They were there to have fun and hang out. Probably didn't need instruction on what to do when the time was right but, more importantly, may have enough respect for their female companion and considered the lyrics offensive. One of the best players in he tournament was there with his wife and what looked to be a 3-4 year old. They may/should have found such "music?" demeaning. A well known pro player who wasn't allowed in the tournament was among the spectators and he mentioned he was planning to open a room and also how disappointed he was there wasn't more money in pool. Part of the answer was being played for him. If this is the environment pool players, enthusiasts, and room owners feel attracts sponsors for their livelyhood then porno shops and drug dealers may be their prime benefactors. I think this is not their desire.

You can lay this one at the feet of the room owner. Ultimately it's their decision what goes on the jukebox, not the vendor who puts the box in. Of course some room owners own their own jukebox so they don't have to split the take 50-50.

It's true that some of this hip-hop and rap music can make bigger numbers for the owner, but at what price. The vendors (who really could care less who listens to the music) want to make all they can on each machine, so if allowed to they will put all that crap on your box. I am intimately familiar with this game having owned or been a partner in four rooms.

In my last room (Jay's Billiards) I spent some time with my jukebox vendor and made it clear to him what kind of music I would allow him to put on MY box. NO violent themes, no anti-cop messages and nothing derogatory to women! I personally like oldies and classics, R & B, soft rock etc. But we did have some country and Mexican music and top forty of course, but nothing profane. And when the jukebox was off, my sound system automatically kicked in with the music I chose. We had a CD player that held five CD's and would rotate from one to the other. I had a great collection of cool music which I kept after closing that room.

The music you play has a lot to do with setting the atmosphere for the room. You want trouble, just put violence prone music on all day. You will attract just those kind of customers. I wanted a mellow atmosphere and that's what we had. And we were in the heart of the ghetto. Funny, my room became the most popular local hangout. Even the gangsters who came in were on their best behavior. They knew it was neutral territory.

The same applies for video games. I had a different vendor for them and I told him from the get go, NO violent games. I didn't want to see (and hear) blood and guts all day long. And I damn sure didn't want to promote gun violence either. I'd prefer to make a dollar or two less and sleep good at night.

Doug,

We apologize for your expierence at our tournament this weekend. This incident was mentioned to the room owner and will be handled in a better fashion in the event that it happens again. I try to put on a quality event and will try to continue to promote this sport the best way I know how. Again, thank you for bringing this to my attention and I apologize to everyone for not handling this at the time that it happened.

Best Regards,

The GSBT
Shannon & Marge

Internet jukeboxes play a big role in this problem nowadays. To my knowledge, management has no control over what gets played.

I know a couple successful bar room owners....they both say the same thing....If/when they want to change the croud type...they change the music type.

This is the reason i will never go back to the Jackson,Ms tournament. I have never heard such vile, vulgar racist rap in my life.I wrote down the names of some of them, and when i got back i printed out the words. Lets just say theres no way i could post the words on here without them being deleted. It was the most anti-white racist garbage i've ever heard. Can someone since a double standard? Ask Big Truck,he had to keep warning listeners of the x rated garbage!I also believe theres a agenda to corrupt the minds of our youth and its working!PM me and i will quote some of this garbage and you will be shocked.

From someone who is younger(I'm 24), I agree with you completely. Today's music(I use that term VERY loosely) is complete garbage and not what I would like to hear when I play pool. I don't think it makes sense to mix a classy game with slutty "music".

I donated to the GSBT tourny in Murfeesboro last weekend. I think it needs to be said (again) that Shannon and Marge ran an excelent tournament. I hope people aren't blaming Shannon for the music selection.

I agree that some of the music was poor and I even wore my Ipod for my second beat down of the day. I was trying not to use it but couldn't hold out any longer.

I had a great time and will play again when I can. I hope more players will show up next time. Please support these events. You can have a great time, see some good matches and get to play oustanding players cheap (I definitly wouldn't pay more for the beat down that Josh O'Neal put on me). You don't have to be a champion to enjoy these events.

If I'm reading this thread correctly the offensive music went on for a couple days and the people running the tournament didn't notice it.Now they are apologizing after the fact?

I do have to chuckle at the fact that someone had to write down the names of the songs to go home and see what they said by looking it up on the internet. THEN they could decide if it was profane or not. NOT by listening to it..... "Oh the horror..."

Guess I'm not as old as my birth certificate says.

Look in the mirror, folks. See if you can remember when you were young. Don't be a hypocrite. By all means, keep truly young folks away from more adult-themed stuff. But don't claim the sky is falling, because it's been falling since the Blackboard Jungle, and Elvis on Ed Sullivan.

"One Two Three O'clock, Four O'clock rock..." Scandalous in it's day. And Elvis with those hips... And those Beatle boys with their long hair. Listen to yourselves, and look in that mirror long and hard. Keep track of what your young people are doing, be involved in their lives. You will be just fine, and so will they.

Thanks Bob, it was very nice to see you again. I will have to agree that you didn't get the best draw of the tourney, but to make you feel better at least Josh did win the event. It was a good time, except for the music on Sunday- unfortunately the music was played on an internet juke box so neither the pool room or Shannon and I had any control over what got played.

I think we will be having more events close to you in the future. Take care and keep shootin'!

The Beatles had long hair, Elvis shook his hips on stage....both of which wouldn't be heard on a radio or jukebox while singing about rape or other profane things ARE. Write it all off to "your parents thought this or that was bad in it's day", and eventually as things gradually get worse and worse EVERYTHING should be accepted....I don't like the sound of where that ends up. Don't draw a line, just keep MOVING the line...lol. Oh well, back to the tourney, I hope the play was competitive and folks had fun despite what was being playing on the jukebox in the place.

The music doesn't really offend me. It just doesn't suit me.

I had a good time.

"I'll be back".

One thing about those "internet jukeboxes" is that they come with a remote control that allows the owner or bartender (whoever is holding it) to not only turn the volume up and down but to skip songs at their discretion. I know this because my local bar has one and the lady behind the bar often skips past the screaming death metal songs.

Also the remote can be used to skip over songs when some knucklehead plays "Freebird" 18 times in a row. God, I hate that.
