Well i just got back from playing in Amsterdam's 14.1 league with some pretty tough company. Tonight I had to play Chris Lynch who by all accounts was a gentleman and a pleasure to play with. I actually learned a lot and after the game was over by a score of 150-78 with Chris winning he gave me some brief pointers as well.

This loss is in no way discouraging to me at all as I had my fair share of attempts at the table however I could not capitalize on them. There were a few glimmers of hope as I played a few shots that even Chris tapped his stick for. If anything this loss has lit an even greater fire under me and I cant thank Chris enough for inspiring me to go back week after week. The only problem for me is that driving that 45 to an hour just to play one match is a little rough. Would like two matches but i wont be greedy but grateful for what I am getting to do.

I WON THE LAG THOUGH !!!!!! I know Alinco wanted to know and I plan on making that my trademark at some point lol.

As for parking I had no problem whatsoever.

Again to any and all who are thinking of attending one of Chris's clinics or taking lessons I highly recommend it. His touch and finesse are quite impressive.

A big thanks to Danny Barouty for setting me up in the master's division even if it was because there were no spots in the regular division. I am looking forward to learning more and more.
 
That's awesome, I am proud and jealous of you all at the same time !!!

Can't wait for my schedule to change even more now !!

Congrats on putting a sizable dent in the score. :thumbup:

We are all jealous of your experiences there.:mad:

If the long ride is too much for a short time there, stick around afterwards and sweat some of the other matches. My rides are about 25 minutes to Red Shoes and 35 minutes to the Illinois Billiard Club. Yours are a little longer but when you get there, you are in Ames, Mister.

You did good for yourself. Getting 78 points, does say that you had plenty
of chances at the table. As for an hour drive. Not bad at all to play in a room like that and to play with such fine 14.1 players. I have to drive an hour anywhere down here to play in some poor "bar with cheap tables" in poor condition. Good luck for the rest of the season & stick with it. Keep us posted each week.

Congrats on a good first showing.

To put things in perspective I live 13 miles from one of the rooms I play at and during rush hour that can take over an hour to drive.
 
14.1 League at Big Daddy's Billiards!!!!

If anyone is within driving range....we are getting geared up to start a new session at Big Daddy's. Myself (Richard Molineiro-owner of Big Daddy's) Shaun Wilkie, Ed Deska, Tim Slavin, Andy Lincoln, Lee Fallin, Bruce Jones, Paul Poole, Tom Zippler and Rolf Ryden are just some of the players I have in just the "A" Bracket for starts!!

I have a "B" and "C" bracket also!! So if you can make it come on by!!

baxterrrrrrrrrrrrr i would come down to maryland just to hang out with him again and have a hot roast beef sandwich with gravy with cindy !!!!!
 
I'm going to have to play better next time since I'll be under the microscope. It was nice to play you Charlie and I'm sure we'll play again this season. Hopefully we'll both play better than we did this time although it wasn't a bad game it wasn't our best either. I will practice my lag.

You should have a few matches to make up so maybe you can arrange to play 2 matches on a few nights so the drive isn't so bad. I'll see you Monday.
 
Thanks for saying what I was thinking, Chris. Charlie, in the future I hope you make your opponents aware that you plan to report on the match here. While this is a competitive league, you're never really sure what your opponents' motivations are on any given day. Not to say they would dump, because there's no benefit to that whatsoever in this league, but maybe a guy had a tough day at work and isn't really looking to bear down so much - all of a sudden you get a few more opportunities than you ordinarily might and you're on here reporting a score lol.

Please understand I know you have the best of intentions, and we all really want to see you do well. I just want to make sure you are giving your opponents notice that, as Chris says, they will be under the microscope on their results with you. This league is a bit informal and players wouldn't have the same expectation of results getting reported as in, say, a major tournament.

I dont believe that any harm was meant... i just think that charles is proud to be a part of such a League Of Extraordinary Gentleman !!! and is trying to boost up a Great Game and a Great League


although consent might not be a bad idea as well..

I'm sure no harm was meant. I'm a little surprised how thin-skinned the A team appears to be. Everyone knows that Charlie is just trying to help energize the game as well as get better. I guess Charlie won't be allowed to tell us mere mortals what is going on behind the curtain.:confused:
 
Nobody said anything about Charlie not being allowed to report the scores or give details of the match but it is fair to the opponent to ask them first if that's ok. It's basically the same as videotaping a match. I doubt you would do that without asking first.

With that said, I have no problem whatsoever that Charlie posted this thread. He's a nice guy, means well and it's good for the game and the room that people know about it.

I guess the world has come so far along technology wise that we all should try to live our lives in public as if we are being recorded and reported to the world. I don't think I'm totally happy about that but I certainly can't change the fact that things change.

I don't even understand the response of "guess we won't get to hear more results". All I said was that Charlie should make sure to inform his opponents that he was probably going to write about it.

I Didnt mean this to be harmful, at the same respect i dont think charlie would want to be harmful.

i am sorry if i am out of line here, or made something out of something that was not.


charlie is like my brother, he truelly is genuine. he is just doing his part in helping support the game we all love !

Actually, what I said was "I guess Charlie won't be allowed to tell us mere mortals what is going on behind the curtain." I really don't care about the results. I would just like to hear what he learned from watching the good players.

I just thought the posts by you and Chris were meant to discourage Charlie from sharing his experiences with the rank and file unless he first gets a signed waiver from the stars. If Charlie has to go up and warn everyone that he plays that he might post something about it in a thread on AZB, that requirement would have a chilling effect on Charlie's experience at Amsterdam and it would probably just be easier to say the hell with it and not talk about it.

If I play a hundred ball runner in a league am I allowed to talk about it? I think so. Write about it? Why not? I don't understand how this is different.

Your bat, your ball, your rules. I certainly do not want Charlie's experience to be any less interesting that it can be, and if silence is the price, I say he should pay it.

But I actually think it is good for 14.1 if someone shares their experiences to we who can only run 20 balls but love the game. We are part of the fan base. We know you guys do it right. We like to be able to dream that maybe somehow someday some of us might be able to approach your excellence.

I don't think anyone is trying to discourage Charlie in any way. I'm not. Steve has a point that it is a nice thing to let someone know ahead of time that you're going to write about them. If that person has issues with it then that can be dealt with ahead of time instead of after the fact.

I think I will refrain from posting further about this until Charlie himself chimes in.

Charlie, you can post about our matches anytime. I will just have to make sure to practice beforehand. Especially the lag.
 
Guys come on now, I know no one is getting too heated here but all the points that have been made so far are valid. Steve is right that I should have asked permission to report on the goings on of another player. He is right it is the right and courteous thing to do and I will do so in the future.

That being said it is true I had no malicious intentions obviously and I dont think anyone on this forum thinks I did either. I was and still am very excited about the match and my future matches and with those matches I will be sure to ask my opponents if its cool that I report on them.

I am reporting on them more to see where my own game is standing and in all honesty it was never my intention or thinking that I was reporting on the other guy as well. Like I said I am just excited, being a young guy playing with this caliber of player is like a dream come true to me.

So to Chris and Steve the next time I am there believe me I will be asking all opponents if I can report on the match. To everyone else I appreciate the backing and believe me if allowed you will hear everything and anything I can think of regarding my matches.

I have no idea how this thread got away from us like it has.

If someone's performance in a rather informal game is going to become fodder for the internet, I have no problem with that. I just think he should be made aware of it beforehand. If you don't let him know, then you don't know how seriously he was taking the game. I don't know; maybe everyone else always bears down in a league match or a friendly game, but I don't. I'm not saying I never do. I'm just saying, if I know the match is going to be discussed on the internet, then I will make sure to play hard.

Isn't this just common etiquette to let a guy know that? I don't even understand how this is controversial.

Dennis, my comment of "I'm not backing down on this" was purely from a personal standpoint, meaning that I'm not apologizing for feeling the way I do on this. My bat, my ball, my rules? That implies you think I'm making some kind of policy at Amsterdam on this - maybe you misunderstood?

Now that I know Charlie will be writing about my game with him, I'm going to be playing my hardest. That doesn't mean I will even win - but at least whatever happens, I can be comfortable that I was given fair notice. I will know that he will be writing about a game, win or lose, where we were both trying our hardest.

Let me reiterate, as I think my point somehow got lost.

- Charlie was very respectful in how he wrote about Chris.
- I think Charlie should be able to write about the games.
- I do not think he needs to ask permission.
- I just think he should let his opponent know that he might discuss it on the internet.
- I think that if he doesn't ask permission, he's perfectly entitled to discuss the games, and even the names, just without the scores.

Two weeks ago I beat a player I'd never beaten before, a very famous player. Believe me, I'd have loved to discuss this game here. But I don't think it's fair to him. It was just an off-the-cuff game we played, and as such, I feel the game should be off the record. I feel this player had a reasonable expectation he wasn't going to read about it the next day. I guess I'm in the minority on this?

I think it's great what Charlie wants to do with writing about the games.

Dennis, it is your call whether you write about your games with the hundred ball runner in your league. All I'm saying is that reporting the score with him, when you don't even know if he was taking the match seriously, isn't something I'd do. Also note that when I say "taking the match seriously", I don't mean that he was taking you lightly. I mean, sometimes a guy is dead tired, or has work on his mind, or is drinking, or is fighting with his girlfriend, and he's content to just sit back and knock some balls around.

I really don't even understand what is controversial about any of this.
