Huge pockets at WPC

Heard player that are out of the tourney complaining about pockets being HUGE. Anyone has any idea how big it actually is?

If the pockets are SO BIG, how come they're outta the tourney then? :)

The main complaint about the big pockets is if you made a couple mistakes early you could be down 6 or 7 games in a race to 9 before you knew it. I'm assuming from the comments that are being made that they are playing winner breaks.

Daz also made a comment about the wing ball consistently going in on the break. Apparently they are using the Magic Rack or a similar product and racking with the one on the head spot. He feels that they should be racking with the nine on the head spot to stop the wing ball from going in so easily.

Big pockets = unskilled pool is probably why the no-names shine in this tournament. Too much luck involved.

To say any of the players there are unskilled isn't really fair but the large pockets and fairly short races do mean that you have to have a certain amount of luck to win this tournament.

I'd like to see the races be to at least 11 if not 12 or 13.

If big pockets make it easier for an "unskilled" player to run out, imagine what it does for the skilled player.

C'mon, now. Crying about the size of the pockets is cry-baby crap. Last time I checked, everyone plays on the same table. As for making 1 mistake and being down 7 games - that's pool and that's 9ball. Don't like it, well-- don't make that mistake. Just my opinion.

So to take your example to the extreme, if the pockets were so big that a ball went in on the break every time and a C player could run out every game to the point where whoever won the lag won 99% of the matches, you would still call that a true 9-ball world championship? I would call it a lagging championship, lol.

Making 1 mistake and being down 7 games is 9-ball but I feel that should only happen if your opponent is playing well and shouldn't happen if your opponent is only playing OK.

No question that tighter pockets are an advantage for the more skilled players. Conversely, looser pockets are great equalizers for the lesser skilled players. And that's the name of that tune.

Well said!!!

Even 4.5's play huge with brand new cloth. Not sure what can really be done about that.

From my experience with the magic rack, it's nearly impossible to miss the wing ball. Even on 4.5's with worn cloth, which is what I have in my basement.

With Magic Rack, wing ball goes 95% of the time on my 4" pockets.

You miss you lose

Hey,that's MY opiinion...i wondered where it went...
Tight pockets take the excitement away.I think players that favor them
want the best resume to win.
I like a game that a kid like Wu can come out of no-where and take it
down.
And like Spidey says - the best player wins - but players who like a
lock need not apply.
If i won a lottery and promoted the game, the smallest pockets allowed
would be four & a half with a clean fall.
Want tight pockets?....play snooker

Just to make my position clear, I don't have a problem with easier table conditions if the race is extended.

I just feel that a world championship should mean something and you should be one of the top 20 to 25 players in the world to win.

I wouldn't want the tournament set up so that only the top few players in the world had a chance to win though because it would be boring if the same three or four players won all the time. There has to be a balance between rewarding the best players for their talent and hard work and keeping things interesting.

A very reasonable sentiment.
But i like the idea of some kid from a small town -with a good stroke -
shocking the pool world.
Moneymaker,very unheralded,did professional poker a big favor.
