Has anyone tried a Cocobolo ferrule. My brother wants me to use some Cocobolo that I used in his cue for his ferrule. Do you all think it will work or is it a bad idea. Thanks.

It would work.
I would use some sort of fiber pad under the tip to help keep the wood ferrule from cracking.
There are those that dont use a ferrule at all ... just a tip on the end of the wood shaft.

where to locate them

i am looking for some pads that are thicker than the ones that atlas sells, any suggestions? thanks chuck starkey

Similar but not the same this is resin impregnated laminates. Ob uses a completely different process. The stuff is strong in a thru ferrule and has a tendancy to break at the base of the cap when capped. Laminations are set at a 90 degree cross to add strength. Weight is down to the point just a little heavier than ther maple you take off. I sell it in joint and butt size too.

If you have some phenolic rod , cut a piece to make your own pad . The cocobolo may look cool , it's not going to hold up ...

I believe that it would be a poor ferrule material as it is too oily so it would be problematic getting a good glue bond for the tip.

I had a friend put one on his cue. I told him that it probably wouldn't hit that well. And I was correct, looks really cool just doesn't play that well in ferrule form.

Tell him to get a cocobolo toilet seat instead. lol I heard of one guy who did make one.

Isn't Cocobolo is a relative to poison ivy? I would think twice before I sat my bare a$$ down on that. I suppose it would be ok if it had a good heavy clear coat.

Yeah I told this story in another thread but I'll paste it in again for those interested.

Paul Mottey told me a funny story once. Paul would not work with cocobolo due to an allergy but he had a friend who was a woodworker who loved the stuff. He made all sorts of stuff out of cocobolo for around his home. He even made a cocobolo toilet seat. As some of you probably know, allergy to cocobolo is kind of like poison ivy and like poison ivy, you can be ok with it one day(not be affected by it in any noticable way) and the next be highly allergic. This was the case with Pauls buddy who noticed a large ring of inflamed skin on his ass one day and his Doc confirmed he was allergic to cocobolo.

For some reason I hear Johnny Cash's voice singing "The Ring of Fire".
I developed an allergy to cocobolo a few years ago. Wasn't affected by it for 15+ years, then all of the sudden, I broke out and was itchy in every place that sweats from any of its dust - - arm pits, finger webs, between my toes, etc. I still like the stuff, and when I use it, I figure on a few days of hydrocortizone and swollen eyes. Sucks.

If it hasn't been suggested yet, Why not just make a ferrule out of brown phenolic, It plays pretty good.
