Rear chuck for Grizzly lathe ...

Bought a chuck and adapter from lee at Brianna and instaled it on my Grizzly lathe. Works very well.
Was using the Porper PVC split collet type centers but wanted something a little better.
Made the adapter shim from delrin.

Willie,

Does it work well with the set screws locking on to the delrin shim, or did you index 3 holes in the shim collar so the set screws locked down on the spindle thru the shim?

How do you open your cover? It looks like the chuck is much wider than the hole.

To answer both questions ...

The chuck adapter and shim fit very tightly over the rear spindle.
I slip it on and take it off as needed.
I dont use the set screws as the adapter fits very tightly.
It is just for centering the rear of the workpiece and does not really need to be dead solid to the spindle.

The PVC things that Porper sells (back alignment collet)
works fairly well but I was looking for something a bit better.
 
Do you do anything to dial it in every time you slip it on? What is the typical run out of your stock behind the chuck?

Ah ... there is the rub ...

I am still working on getting it as close to dead on as I can.
Right now it is as good or slightly better run out than the porper collet.
Defiantly more rigid.
About .040" of wobble right now.

It is my shim and I may need to switch from delrin to metal to get it right on.

Installing it permanently and dialing it in to zero it out is probably the only way to hit it true every time.
 
Willee: have you thought of adding more set screw holes in the adapter? THough I made my own adapter and made it a bit longer. And no set screws, I prefer bolts, I used 5/16 fine thread. Just long enough to make contact on my spindle, and yes I had to increase the clearance of the gear cover hole. I have six in mine, three that contact the rearmost part of my lathe spindle and the inner three close to the edge of my adapter. I use no bushing, instead I use the six bolts, and to protect my spindle I drilled out the end of each bolt and fabbed a brass button for each. I can dial in the chuck in three planes now. Works good for me. I think the last I checked I had about .001 runout. I also bored out the chuck jaws. ANd the chuck just threads on when I want to remove it, I made the threads a close fit.

I like the way you made it adjustable.
Might go that way with this one.

Willee, I used a taig lathe,(the right hand end) and mounted it on blocks and clamped close to the end of the lathe.Then used left hand turning tool(home ground carbide) to true the end face off the rear of the spindle and the bearing lock nut.
Made a big difference.
Now the chuck just requires a radial alignment and not a radial and swash.
 
I did the same installation a while back using Chris H chuck. His chuck has plenty of setscrews and - judging by your pic- shorter collar to mount it "with".

My first tries was not going well. Mount,dismount,mount and dismount where the TIR was rubbish.
I did make a collar of Delrin at the end to center it on the axle as good as possible. However, I made it shorter so the set screws was not affected. I.e a small collar which was just a portion of the chucks mounting/clamping surface.

After several rounds I managed to get it fixated with a acceptable TIR. I used a maintenance arbor (not sure if this is the correct word) which I chucked up on an meassured. I also meassures on a small surface of the chucks body.

When I finally managed to get this doen, I decided to cut a larger hole on the Alu-rear cover so I could leave the chuck there without touching the chuck. "Never change a winning team" :)

The chuck is nice and tru now and I hardly ever use the locking pins to chuck up on something. Finger tight is OK.

I did consider to figure out a way to mount my mini lathe at the end to face of the main axle, but I never came up with a ok way to do it. As mentioned in a post above-that would have helped.

Before install

Just a pic of how it looked like before I got Chris´s chuck.

Again, very happy with it and would get some extras (EDIT: Extra chucks from Chris) for a steady rest :)

Edit: Still working on the CAD part for my steady but Chris chuck is perfect for this app if you ask me.
Short collar makes a short "axle" in the steady and you then have a steady without the delrin collars. My main
reason for making one is coring dowels where the initial "turn" has no tapper. Since the lathe has a wide headstock
I would like to have a steady which could support any lengths (for coring).
So Chris - I would be back for more :)

chris's is very nice also more for bigger lathes and has more adjustment then mine when i made ours it was for the porper
we have on request machined them bigger on a one on one basis everyone has seemed pleased
