playing safe in 8 ball

I believe I understand 2 options, but have a question about a 3rd.

1. I can endeavor to leave the CB in a position which deprives my opponent of a shot as long as I (a) make one or more of my balls or (b) hit one of my balls & have the CB or another ball hit a rail.

2. If I call "safe" before I make a ball, I can choose not to continue the run & again hopefully leave the CB in a position which is strategically advantageous to me.

3. Can I relinquish my turn, if I believe that it is strategically to my advantage to have my opponent shoot, rather than moving the CB myself?

I don't believe 1a is true. You will need to continue shooting if you pocket an object ball legally.

2 and 3 are related. When you call a "safety", you need to pocket your object ball (in some variation of the rule, it is sometimes a foul if you missed your object after calling a safety) and MUST relinquish your turn. Which also means (no. 3) you just can't relinquish your turn voluntarily.

Remember in APA rules are not the same, in APA you can't call safe and then make a ball and turn the shot over....if you make a ball in APA you have to keep shooting.

Not 8 ball related but in one pocket you can do what you asked in #3.....just tap the CB on the top, you owe a ball for the foul but there is no BIH as the CB stays as is and its now the opponents turn.

what a stupid rule. if you call safe you should be able to make a ball and give up your turn.

if you foul the cb by tapping it in 8 ball wouldn't that just result in the other guy getting ball in hand?

BCA is call pocket, so calling a safety is effectively the same as calling one pocket and trying to pot a ball in another. The only point to calling a safety is if you intend to make a ball and don't want to keep shooting, although where I play people call safetys all the time with no intention of making a ball. Still has to meet all the requirements of a legal hit or the other person gets BIH.

When I was playing APA it was slop (mark pocket on 8 ball only). You didn't announce safetys, the score keepers would make a judgement call if they thought it was a safety or not - safetys counted toward your handicap/skill rating. Make a legal hit and pot a ball, you keep shooting. Illegal hit/foul opponent gets BIH.

House rules, local league rules, etc. can all be different - the OP needs to check with his league specifically to answer those questions, although I don't think I've ever heard of option 3.

yes I agree, tho I don't play APA i hear my buddy complain about it all the time. Its like that b/c slop shots count in 8 ball for them...its like 8 ball with 9 ball tendencies. So anytime you make one of your balls wether you meant it or not its still your shot.....its retarted

I have played APA and similar leagues for many years, and I can tell you from personal observation, that the slop rule rarely if ever has an impact on the outcome of a match. If you have two sl-3s playing each other, they are both just as likely to have a couple of lucky slop shots. With the sl-6 or 7, it is very rare to see slop shots. The higher skill level players somehow manage to put the balls in the pocket they are shooting for.

And if you are keeping score for a couple of low ranked players, you are frequently just to see a ball go in a pocket, regardless of who did it!!!

Keeb...IMO, I'd call that poor sportsmanship. I've never seen a good 1-pocket player do what you described.

You've never seen anyone take a foul like that? Honest truth I've seen that many times, and not just talking about bangers either....tho I can't recall it in a one hole tourney I have for sure seen some short stops and pros do that while matched up for sure %100

Why would just touching the top of CB with your tip to take a foul be unsportsmanlike?

How's that any different than just taking a foul. I've always been under the impression that that was just being smart when the situation dictates you to do nothing and just take a penalty.

I agree completely its just like in 9 ball and bangers thinking its just a luck game....I've just always found it odd with that rule and not being able to play the call safe and end your turn.
